My Disciple's Growth Gives Me 10,000x Returns
Chapter 31 — Back to Being a Master
The explosion was smaller this time.
That was progress.
Probably.
Shen Yuan stood outside the Chaos Body Refinement Chamber and watched gray smoke drift through a crack in the door.
Chen An stood beside him.
Neither spoke.
A second crack slowly appeared along the wall.
Chen An looked at it.
Then at Shen Yuan.
"Peak Master."
"Yes?"
"I would like to revise my previous report."
"Go ahead."
"Your third disciple was cultivating."
From inside came Lu Chen's voice.
"I wasn't!"
Chen An remained expressionless.
Shen Yuan raised an eyebrow.
The door opened.
Smoke rolled out.
Lu Chen emerged.
His hair pointed in several directions.
His robes were intact.
Mostly.
A thin line of soot crossed his face.
Behind him, the floor had developed several new opinions about remaining one piece.
Lu looked at Shen Yuan.
"Master."
"Lu Chen."
"I can explain."
Shen Yuan looked past him.
"Can the floor?"
Lu glanced backward.
"...Probably not."
"Then you have an advantage."
Lu brightened.
"I discovered something."
"So did the floor."
Lu stopped brightening.
Chen An bowed.
"I'll arrange repairs."
"Again."
"Again."
He walked away.
Shen Yuan watched him go.
There was something admirable about a man who could witness ancient Guardians returning from the dead, Immortal Realm disturbances, impossible cultivation phenomena—
and remain primarily concerned with damaged flooring.
Cloudveil needed more people like Chen An.
Preferably ones who didn't explode.
Shen Yuan looked at Lu.
"Show me."
Lu immediately became serious.
He raised one palm.
For several breaths—
nothing happened.
Then a strand of gray Qi appeared.
Thin.
Almost transparent.
It did not resemble ordinary spiritual energy.
No elemental affinity.
No clear Yin or Yang.
No heat.
No cold.
It existed in an uncomfortable state before such distinctions.
Primordial Chaos Qi.
One breath.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Lu grinned.
Six—
The gray Qi trembled.
Shen Yuan's eyes narrowed.
Lu tried to pull it into his meridians.
The instant it crossed his skin—
everything changed.
Heat.
Cold.
Wind.
Earth.
Water.
Lightning.
Several incompatible spiritual properties burst from the same strand.
Lu's expression changed.
"Ah."
Shen Yuan caught the Qi before it detonated.
His fingers closed.
The conflicting energies disappeared.
Silence.
Lu lowered his hand.
"That's what happened."
Shen Yuan looked toward the chamber.
"How many times?"
Lu coughed.
"Three."
Shen Yuan waited.
"...Four."
"Lu Chen."
"Five."
Reasonable.
Shen Yuan inspected him.
[Name: Lu Chen]
[Cultivation Technique: Primordial Chaos Scripture]
[Scripture State: Embryonic]
[Cultivation Realm: Unclassified]
[Primordial Chaos Spiritual Root: 19% Awakened]
[Primordial Chaos Body: 8%]
[Physical Foundation: Mortal Transcendent]
[Stable Primordial Chaos Manifestation: Achieved]
[Maximum External Stability: 5.8 breaths]
[Internal Circulation: Failed]
[Disciple Mission Progress: 84%]
No conventional cultivation realm.
And yet—
Shen Yuan's gaze moved across Lu's body.
Bone density.
Muscle.
Blood.
Organs.
Physical Qi.
Every part of him had changed.
The Primordial Chaos Body Seed had continued working even while Lu slept.
The Chaos Body Refinement Chamber had continued nourishing him.
His physical foundation had quietly moved beyond what most Body Tempering cultivators could reach.
Possibly far beyond.
"Punch me."
Lu blinked.
"What?"
"Punch me."
"Master, I don't think—"
"Good."
Lu hesitated.
Then stepped forward.
No technique.
No Chaos Qi.
Just his body.
He punched.
Shen Yuan caught the fist with one finger.
The courtyard shook.
Stone cracked beneath Lu's feet.
Lu stared.
Shen Yuan looked at the crater.
Interesting.
"Again."
"Harder?"
"Yes."
Lu grinned.
That was apparently the correct answer.
He drew back.
Then punched.
BOOM.
Wind blasted across the courtyard.
Leaves scattered.
A nearby stone lantern tipped sideways.
Shen Yuan still used one finger.
But the result confirmed what he suspected.
Lu looked at the damage.
Then at his fist.
"Was that good?"
"For someone with no cultivation realm?"
Shen Yuan paused.
"Absurd."
Lu's grin widened.
Then Shen Yuan added:
"Your control is terrible."
The grin vanished.
"Less absurd."
"Again."
This time the voice belonged to Mo Tian.
The ancient Fourth Disciple approached slowly.
His reconstructed body had improved since yesterday, but not enough to hide the damage.
His steps were steady.
His cultivation was not.
Shen Yuan glanced over.
[Mo Tian]
[Soul Integrity: 46%]
[Body Integrity: 68%]
[Cultivation: Inaccessible / Reconstructing]
Powerful knowledge.
Limited ability to act.
Useful.
Mo Tian looked at Lu.
"Manifest Chaos Qi."
Lu did.
One breath.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Then he attempted circulation.
The strand differentiated.
Mo Tian struck his wrist.
The Qi dispersed.
"Again."
Lu obeyed.
Same result.
"Again."
Failure.
Mo Tian sat on the nearest stone bench.
His expression became thoughtful.
Shen Yuan asked:
"Problem?"
"Several."
"Useful."
"No."
Mo Tian pointed at Lu.
"His Chaos Qi isn't collapsing."
Lu frowned.
"It explodes."
"That's different."
"It doesn't feel different."
"To you."
Fair.
Mo Tian raised one hand.
"Chaos exists before distinction."
Lu nodded.
"You said that."
"When you manifest it externally, nothing asks it to become anything."
Mo Tian pointed at Lu's arm.
"The moment you circulate it through conventional meridians, your body asks questions."
"What questions?"
"What are you?"
"Where do you belong?"
"Which meridian?"
"Which attribute?"
"Which cycle?"
"Which direction?"
Mo Tian shook his head.
"Your physical body has structure."
"Chaos doesn't."
"So when your body demands an answer—"
Lu looked at the cracked chamber.
"It answers everything."
"Exactly."
Lu considered this.
Then smiled.
"So I remove those distinctions."
Mo Tian smiled back.
"Correct."
Lu brightened.
Shen Yuan already disliked where this was going.
Mo Tian continued:
"Destroy the distinction between your meridians, dantian, flesh, spiritual root and soul."
Lu's eyes lit up.
Shen Yuan spoke.
"No."
Mo Tian simultaneously said:
"Absolutely not."
They looked at each other.
A rare moment of complete agreement.
Lu's hand remained raised.
"But didn't you just say—"
"That's what I did."
"And it worked."
"Yes."
Lu looked vindicated.
Mo Tian continued:
"It also nearly killed me."
Lu lowered his hand slightly.
"Oh."
"Repeatedly."
Lower.
"I spent my first eighty years unsure whether waking up with all my organs in the correct locations counted as a successful meditation session."
Lu lowered his hand completely.
"Oh."
Shen Yuan looked at Mo Tian.
"How many times?"
"Nine."
"Useful."
"Stop saying that."
Lin Yue arrived shortly afterward.
Jian Wuchen came with her.
Shen Yuan immediately noticed something was different.
Lin's presence had changed.
Her breathing was lighter.
Her footsteps quieter.
Spiritual energy moved through her body without the roughness of Body Tempering.
The Nine-Yin Lunar Pool had not stopped working simply because Cloudveil had become busy.
Neither had Lin.
Shen Yuan inspected her.
[Name: Lin Yue]
[Cultivation Technique: Nine-Yin Lunar Scripture]
[Cultivation: Qi Refining — Third Stage]
[Nine-Yin Immortal Body: Initial Awakening]
[Nine-Yin Lunar Channels: 2/9 Awakened]

[Nine-Yin Lunar Root: Immortal Grade]
[Physical Foundation: Perfect Body Tempering]
Shen Yuan paused.
Several days ago, she had still been at Body Tempering Ninth Stage.
Now—
Qi Refining Third Stage.
Three stages after crossing an entire major realm.
Lin noticed his attention.
"Master?"
"When did you break through?"
"The first stage two nights ago."
"And the second?"
"Yesterday."
"The third?"
"This morning."
Lu stared.
"This morning?"
Lin nodded.
"You didn't say anything."
"You were asleep."
"That's three breakthroughs."
"Yes."
"In two days."
Lin considered.
"Yes."
Lu looked at Jian.
"Is that normal?"
"No."
Good.
At least someone understood.
Lin had possessed extraordinary aptitude from the beginning.
Her damaged spiritual root had simply prevented that aptitude from expressing itself.
Now she possessed an Immortal-grade root.
A scripture perfectly compatible with her constitution.
An Immortal-grade cultivation environment.
And years of physical foundation that had already been rebuilt to perfection.
The obstruction was gone.
Her talent was finally behaving like talent.
Apparently—
that meant frightening everyone nearby.
"Any instability?" Shen asked.
"No."
"Pain?"
"No."
"Difficulty controlling Qi?"
Lin raised one hand.
Pale lunar energy flowed across her fingers.
Frost appeared.
Not excessive.
Not leaking.
Perfectly contained.
"No."
Shen Yuan nodded.
"Good."
Lu looked offended.
"She gets 'good.'"
"You get explosions."
"Fair."
Then Shen Yuan turned to Jian.
This inspection lasted longer.
Jian's cultivation had become fundamentally different from an ordinary cultivator's.
His original meridians had been destroyed.
His dantian had become irrelevant.
The path Shen Yuan gave him had reconstructed the entire logic of his cultivation.
The system opened.
[Name: Jian Wuchen]
[Cultivation Technique: Ninefold Heaven-Severing Sword Scripture]
[Technique Compatibility: 99%]
[Current Scripture Layer: Second Fold — Sword Meridian Tempering]
[Cultivation Realm: Sword Foundation — Middle Stage]
[Cultivation Core: Innate Sword Heart]
[Nine Sword Meridians: 3/9 Stabilized]
[Fourth Sword Meridian: 21% Stabilized]
[Innate Sword Heart Awakening: 46%]
[Clear Wind Bond: 97%]
[First Key Compatibility: 34%]
Then another section appeared.
[Sword Gate Comprehension]
[First Gate — Heart: Complete]
[Second Gate — Bone: Complete]
[Third Gate — Blood: Developing]
[Fourth Gate — Soul: Unopened]
[Fifth Gate — Void: Unopened]
[Sixth Gate — Will: Unopened]
[Seventh Gate — Tribulation: Unopened]
[Eighth Gate — Swordless: Unopened]
[Ninth Gate — Undefined]
Shen Yuan studied the distinction.
The Nine Sword Meridians were Jian's cultivation infrastructure.
The Nine Gates were something else entirely.
Comprehension.
Understanding.
Sword Dao.
One determined how much power Jian could cultivate.
The other determined what that power could eventually become.
And tying both together—
was the Ninefold Heaven-Severing Sword Scripture.
Jian had never stopped cultivating it.
Not in the Sword Tomb.
Not in the Dead Sword Wasteland.
Not while confronting Gu Jian.
Not while carrying the First Key.
Not while the Seventh Key entered his body.
Not while karmic interference tried to crawl through his Sword Heart.
Not even during the brief connection with the Fifth Guardian.
Those experiences had not cultivated for him.
They had given the scripture pressure.
Questions.
Resistance.
Things for Jian's Sword Heart to understand.
And the scripture had refined every one of them into his cultivation.
"Circulate it," Shen Yuan said.
Jian understood.
He sat.
Clear Wind rested across his knees.
His eyes closed.
Then—
Thump.
His Sword Heart beat.
Sword Qi emerged.
It did not gather in a dantian.
There was no dantian involved.
The Sword Heart itself was the center.
Sword Qi entered the First Sword Meridian.
Returned.
Second.
Returned.
Third.
Returned.
Each completed cycle sharpened the Qi slightly.
Not violently.
Not dramatically.
Precisely.
Then Jian attempted the fourth.
Sword Qi entered.
One tenth.
Two tenths.
The fourth meridian resisted.
Jian's brow tightened.
The Sword Qi advanced another fraction.
Then—
stopped.
Jian immediately withdrew it.
Back through the third.
Second.
First.
Into the Sword Heart.
The entire cycle ended cleanly.
Lu blinked.
"Why did you stop?"
Jian opened his eyes.
"The fourth isn't stable."
"Couldn't you push harder?"
"Yes."
"Then why don't you?"
"Because damaging it would make me weaker."
Lu considered this.
A surprisingly reasonable answer.
Shen Yuan looked at Jian.
"Again."
Jian circulated.
First.
Return.
Second.
Return.
Third.
Return.
Fourth.
Slightly farther.
Then back.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Each cycle advanced almost nothing.
But nothing was damaged.
The fourth Sword Meridian slowly adapted.
[Fourth Sword Meridian Stability: 21% → 22%]
One percent.
Lu looked unimpressed.
"That's slow."
Jian opened one eye.
"Your cultivation explodes."
Lu became quiet.
Mo Tian laughed.
Shen Yuan summoned the complete assessment.
Three panels appeared.
[Cloudveil Disciple Assessment]
[First Disciple — Lin Yue]
[Cultivation Technique: Nine-Yin Lunar Scripture]
[Cultivation: Qi Refining — Third Stage]
[Nine-Yin Immortal Body: Initial Awakening]
[Nine-Yin Lunar Channels: 2/9]
[Current Growth Rate: Extremely High]
[Current Concern: Dao Identity Conflict]
[Second Disciple — Jian Wuchen]
[Cultivation Technique: Ninefold Heaven-Severing Sword Scripture]
[Current Layer: Second Fold — Sword Meridian Tempering]
[Cultivation: Sword Foundation — Middle Stage]
[Nine Sword Meridians: 3/9 Stabilized]
[Fourth Sword Meridian: 22%]
[Sword Heart Awakening: 46%]
[Sword Gate Progress: Third Gate developing]
[Current Growth Rate: Extremely High]
[Current Concern: Independent Sword Path]
[Third Disciple — Lu Chen]
[Cultivation Technique: Primordial Chaos Scripture]
[Scripture State: Embryonic]
[Conventional Cultivation Realm: None]
[Physical Foundation: Mortal Transcendent]
[Primordial Chaos Spiritual Root: 19%]
[Primordial Chaos Body: 8%]
[Stable Chaos Qi: 5.8 breaths]
[Current Growth Rate: Restricted by incomplete foundation]
[Current Concern: First Anchor absent]
[Disciple Mission Progress: 84%]
Shen Yuan stared at them.
Several days.
That was all.
Lin had crossed an entire major realm and reached Qi Refining Third Stage.
Jian had entered the Middle Stage of Sword Foundation while progressing through the Second Fold of the Ninefold Heaven-Severing Sword Scripture.
Lu technically had no cultivation realm whatsoever—
yet his physical body had already reached a level that would make ordinary Qi Refining cultivators question whether the realm system had been designed correctly.
Shen Yuan had almost forgotten.
These three were monsters.
Their problem wasn't slow cultivation.
Quite the opposite.
Their strength was beginning to grow faster than their paths were stabilizing.
Lin's cultivation could continue rising.
But something inside Moonfrost already disagreed with the direction.
Jian's Sword Foundation was becoming stronger.
But ancient swords, dead masters, Guardian Keys and inherited expectations surrounded him from every direction.
Lu's body continued growing stronger despite lacking a cultivation structure capable of properly containing Primordial Chaos.
That—
was the actual problem.
"Show them again," Shen Yuan said.
Lu manifested Chaos Qi.
Lin watched.
Jian watched.
Mo Tian corrected several assumptions.
After three failures, Lin spoke.
"His body needs an anchor."
Mo Tian looked at her.
"Explain."
"When I circulate the Nine-Yin Lunar Scripture, my Lunar Channels already determine the cycle."
She touched her wrist.
"The path exists before the Qi enters."
"Lu's doesn't."
Jian shook his head.
"The path exists."
Everyone looked at him.
"His meridians exist."
"The Chaos Qi refuses their meaning."
Mo Tian's eyes sharpened.
"Continue."
Jian looked at Lu.
"When I circulate the Ninefold Heaven-Severing Sword Scripture, Sword Qi leaves my Sword Heart."
"It enters a Sword Meridian."
"And then?"
Lu asked.
"It returns."
"Why?"
"Because a circulation isn't complete until it returns to the core."
Jian touched his chest.
"If the Sword Qi enters a meridian and cannot return to my Sword Heart, I don't consider that advancement."
"I consider it damage."
Lu stared at him.
Something flickered in his expression.
Shen Yuan noticed.
Not understanding.
Not yet.
But close.
Mo Tian noticed too.
He leaned forward.
Lu looked at the gray strand above his palm.
"My Chaos Qi doesn't know where to return."
Silence.
Better.
Jian said:
"Maybe."
Lu frowned.
"But if I tell it where to return, I'm defining it again."
"Yes."
"So I need somewhere it can return without telling it what it is."
This time—
nobody answered.
Because that was finally the correct question.
The system appeared.
[Disciple Mission updated.]
[Primary obstacle identified.]
[Primordial Chaos Foundation requires a stable First Anchor.]
[Requirements:]
— Must survive undifferentiated Chaos Qi.
— Must not impose conventional elemental classification.
— Must remain compatible with Disciple's physical foundation.
— Must originate from Disciple's own cultivation structure.
Shen Yuan read the final line twice.
Important.
He couldn't simply hand Lu a treasure and call the problem solved.
Mo Tian couldn't give him his foundation.
Lin couldn't lend him Lunar Channels.
Jian couldn't give him a Sword Heart.
They could show him possibilities.
Lu had to build the answer.
"How long did yours take?" Shen Yuan asked Mo Tian.
"Seventeen years."
Lu's face fell.
Shen Yuan nodded.
"We'll do better."
Lu brightened.
"How much better?"
Shen Yuan looked at the damaged chamber.
"That depends on how much architecture remains."
Lu stopped brightening.
Later that morning—
Gu Jian stood before the ancient gate.
The Seventh Key floated beside him.
The gate had been restless since the Fifth Guardian's signal.
Not dangerous.
Persistent.
A faint pull.
Toward the Dead Sword Wasteland.
Xuankong stood behind him.
"You feel it too."
Gu Jian nodded.
"The six remnants."
"Unstable?"
"No."
"Then?"
"Waiting."
"For you?"
"Probably."
Xuankong smiled.
"How sentimental."
Gu Jian ignored him.
The ancient gate opened slightly.
Beyond it—
dead swords.
Black earth.
Endless wind.
The Dead Sword Wasteland.
Gu Jian stared for a long time.
Then sighed.
"I need to return."
A voice came from behind them.
"You're leaving?"
Jian Wuchen.
Gu Jian turned.
Jian looked at the gate.
"Can I come?"
"No."
Immediate.
Jian frowned.
"Why?"
Gu Jian studied him.
Not the First Key.
Not Clear Wind.
Not the Sword Heart.
Him.
"Because you've spent enough time walking through dead men's paths."
Jian became still.
"The Tomb showed you Master."
"The Wasteland showed you me."
"The First Key pulls you toward a Guardian whose path you don't know."
"Your former sect left you a murdered master."
"And every ancient sword you touch wants to tell you what came before."
Gu Jian stepped closer.
"Enough."
Jian's hand tightened.
"Your Ninefold Heaven-Severing Sword Scripture has already carried you into the Middle Stage of Sword Foundation."
"Your Fourth Sword Meridian is opening."
"Your Third Gate has begun developing."
"At this speed, strength isn't your problem."
Jian looked at him.
"Then what is?"
Gu Jian smiled faintly.
"Making sure the sword holding that strength is still yours."
Silence.
Jian understood.
The scripture Shen Yuan had given him was extraordinary.
But even the best scripture could become another cage if Jian spent his entire life filling it with other people's answers.
Ji Cang's Severance.
Gu Jian's Seventh Sword.
Jian Shou's teachings.
The First Guardian's authority.
Even Shen Yuan's understanding.
All could teach him.
None could become his Ninth Gate.
"Build something that came after us," Gu Jian said.
Jian looked toward Shen Yuan's residence.
"Master says similar things."
"Then he's occasionally intelligent."
A voice drifted from far across Cloudveil.
"I heard that."
Gu Jian paused.
Xuankong laughed.
Jian almost smiled.
Almost.
Gu Jian left before noon.
No catastrophe accompanied him.
No ancient enemy appeared.
The sky did not split.
He simply crossed the gate.
Before leaving, he looked back at Jian.
"The First Key is yours to carry."
"Not yours to obey."
Then the gate closed.
The Seventh Guardian returned to the Dead Sword Wasteland.
One ancient expert gone.
Cloudveil became slightly quieter.
Shen Yuan approved.
At the Nine-Yin Lunar Pool—
Lin Yue circulated the Nine-Yin Lunar Scripture.
The first Lunar Channel opened.
Then the second.
Qi Refining Third Stage spiritual energy flowed smoothly through both.
The pool responded.
Pale mist rose.
Frost spread across the water.
Lin drew Moonfrost.
One slash.
A crescent of pale Sword Qi crossed the training ground.
A stone target split.
Second slash.
Faster.
Third.
The air froze.
Lin stopped.
Her breathing remained steady.
Qi Refining Third Stage.
Yet every strike already exceeded what an ordinary cultivator at her realm should produce.
The Nine-Yin Immortal Body was beginning to show its true nature.
Then—
Moonfrost trembled.
Deep within the blade—
something woke.
Old.
Faint.
Barely conscious.
Lin touched it.
The sword spirit recoiled.
"Wrong."
Moonfrost ripped itself from her hand.
The sword buried itself in stone twenty feet away.
Lin stared.
Then walked over.
Pulled it free.
Again.
Nine-Yin Lunar Scripture.
Lunar Channels.
Sword Intent.
The spirit stirred.
"Wrong."
The sword flew.
Lin retrieved it.
Third attempt.
This time she increased her circulation.
Qi Refining Third Stage erupted.
Frost covered the ground.
Moonlight seemed to gather despite the sun overhead.
The Nine-Yin Immortal Body resonated.
Moonfrost shook violently.
"WRONG."
Lin caught the sword before it escaped.
"Explain."
Silence.
Lin waited.
Nothing.
Her eyes narrowed.
"You can speak."
Nothing.
"Then speak."
Moonfrost vibrated.
No answer.
Lin sat beside the pool.
The sword rested across her knees.
She did not force it.
Several minutes later—
Shen Yuan arrived.
He looked at the destroyed targets.
Then the frozen ground.
Then the sword-shaped hole in the stone.
Then Lin.
"Everyone is damaging my mountain today."
Lin remained calm.
"Lu started it."
"Strong defense."
Shen Yuan sat nearby.
"What happened?"
"The sword spirit woke."
"Good."
"It rejected me."
"Less good."
Lin looked at Moonfrost.
"It says I'm wrong."
Shen Yuan inspected the blade.
[Moonfrost Sword]
[Grade: Heaven-Transcendent]
[Bond with Lin Yue: 99.4%]
[Sword Spirit Awakening: 3%]
[Previous Dao Imprint detected.]
[Current Conflict: Undefined.]
Interesting.
Ninety-nine point four percent bond.
The sword wasn't rejecting Lin.
Not truly.
"Does it refuse your Qi?"
"No."
"Your hand?"
"No."
"Your ownership?"
"No."
Lin looked at him.
"Then it isn't rejecting you."
"What is it rejecting?"
"Something you're doing."
"Which part?"
"Ask it."
"I did."
"And?"
"It is uncooperative."
"Ancient things often are."
Somewhere across Cloudveil—
Xuankong sneezed.
Shen Yuan ignored it.
Lin looked down.
"Should I stop advancing until I understand?"
That was a better question.
Shen Yuan considered.
"No."
Lin looked up.
"Why?"
"Your foundation is stable."
"Your scripture is circulating properly."
"Your Qi is under control."
"The problem isn't that you're advancing too quickly."
He tapped Moonfrost lightly.
"The problem is that something old has an opinion about where you're going."
Lin became silent.
"Then I keep cultivating."
"Yes."
"And investigate the disagreement."
"Yes."
Lin nodded.
Then:
"Master."
"What?"
"What if it wants the previous owner's path?"
There it was.
Yue Hanshuang.
Ancient Second Disciple.
Nine-Yin.
The similarity was impossible to ignore.
Shen Yuan answered:
"Then disappoint it."
Lin blinked.
"You're Lin Yue."
Shen Yuan stood.
"The Nine-Yin Lunar Scripture is something you cultivate."
"Not something that gets to decide who you become."
He walked away.
Behind him—
Moonfrost trembled.
For the first time since awakening—
it did not say wrong.
Jian spent the afternoon inside the Sword Intent Tempering Hall.
The Primordial Sword Stone stood before him.
Clear Wind rested across his knees.
The First Key remained quiet inside his body.
He ignored it.
For once—
he wanted to cultivate without listening to an ancient object.
Jian closed his eyes.
The Ninefold Heaven-Severing Sword Scripture began to circulate.
Thump.
Sword Heart.
First Sword Meridian.
Return.
Second.
Return.
Third.
Return.
Fourth.
The Sword Qi advanced.
Twenty-two percent.
Twenty-three.
Twenty-four.
Resistance increased.
Jian's breathing remained steady.
He could force it.
He knew that.
His Sword Heart was strong enough.
Clear Wind was strong enough.
The Primordial Sword Stone supplied more than enough Sword Intent.
One violent push—
and he might tear the Fourth Sword Meridian open.
Jian withdrew instead.
Sword Qi returned.
Fourth.
Third.
Second.
First.
Sword Heart.
Complete cycle.
Again.
The scripture moved.
Again.
Again.
Again.
The Fourth Sword Meridian resisted.
Jian did not attack it.
He tempered it.
Sword Qi passed through the portion that could endure it.
Returned.
Passed again.
Returned.
Each cycle widened the path slightly.
The system appeared.
[Fourth Sword Meridian Stability: 22% → 27%.]
Jian continued.
[27% → 31%.]
Sweat appeared on his forehead.
The Primordial Sword Stone hummed.
Clear Wind vibrated.
Jian continued.
[31% → 34%.]
Then—
the Fourth Sword Meridian opened halfway.
Sword Qi surged.
Jian's Sword Heart beat violently.
For one instant, the temptation appeared.
Push.
Break through.
Force the rest.
Jian remembered Gu Jian.
Dead men's paths.
He remembered Shen Yuan.
The Ninth Gate belongs to you.
Jian withdrew.
The Sword Qi returned cleanly to his Heart.
The unstable half of the Fourth Meridian closed.
But the portion already tempered remained.
[Fourth Sword Meridian Stability: 34%.]
[Sword Foundation — Middle Stage stabilized.]
[Sword Heart Awakening: 46% → 47%.]
Jian opened his eyes.
No dramatic breakthrough.
No ancient inheritance.
No Guardian awakening.
Just cultivation.
His cultivation.
Jian looked at Clear Wind.
"Again."
And began another cycle.
By evening—
Shen Yuan sat inside Qingyuan Hall.
The three disciple panels floated before him.
Lin Yue.
Qi Refining Third Stage.
Her Nine-Yin Lunar Scripture was circulating faster with every completed Lunar Channel.
Jian Wuchen.
Middle Sword Foundation.
Second Fold.
Fourth Sword Meridian at thirty-four percent.
His progress had come from hours of actual cultivation, not simply surviving ancient events.
Lu Chen.
No realm.
Yet.
Shen Yuan leaned back.
Cloudveil had spent days dealing with Guardian Keys.
Ancient disciples.
Severed memories.
Dead Sword Wastelands.
The Listener.
The Immortal Realm.
Somewhere during all of that—
his disciples had continued cultivating.
Of course they had.
Lin didn't stop because ancient mysteries appeared.
Jian didn't stop circulating his scripture because dead people kept interrupting him.
Lu apparently didn't stop even when specifically instructed to.
Shen Yuan had been thinking about the problem incorrectly.
His disciples did not need him to drag them upward.
Given their physiques, techniques, resources and Cloudveil itself—
they were perfectly capable of becoming terrifying on their own.
Perhaps too capable.
What they needed was someone ensuring that the strength becoming theirs actually remained theirs.
Not Yue Hanshuang's.
Not Gu Jian's.
Not Mo Tian's.
Not Ji Cang's.
Theirs.
That—
was a master's job.
Dinner was unusually peaceful.
Mo Tian ate enough for three recovering ancient cultivators.
Xuankong complained that Chen An's wine was weak.
Chen An informed him that Cloudveil's budget did not include satisfying eight-thousand-year-old alcohol preferences.
Xuankong offered to contribute.
Chen An asked whether ancient spirit stones were accepted by current Mortal Realm merchants.
Xuankong became quiet.
Mo Tian laughed until he started coughing.
Lin Yue ate silently.
Jian Wuchen's fingers moved faintly beneath the table.
Circulating.
First Sword Meridian.
Second.
Third.
Return.
Lu noticed.
"Are you cultivating while eating?"
Jian looked at him.
"Yes."
"Can I do that?"
"No."
"Why?"
"You explode while sitting still."
Lu considered.
"Fair."
Guest Nine sat beneath the eaves.
Again.
Shen Yuan noticed.
This time—
he walked over.
Guest Nine looked up.
"You're leaving."
It wasn't a question.
They remained silent.
"Why?"
"Cloudveil is becoming visible."
"To the Listener?"
"To many things."
"Because of you?"
Guest Nine looked toward the night sky.
"Partly."
"That's vague."
"It's the most accurate answer I have."
Shen Yuan found himself appreciating that kind of answer more than he used to.
Guest Nine continued:
"I returned because the mountain called."
"I needed to know whether the old path had awakened."
"It has."
Their eyes moved toward Lin.
Jian.
Lu.
"Different."
Shen Yuan nodded.
"Good."
"Yes."
A long silence.
Then Guest Nine said:
"I shouldn't stay."
"When?"
"Not tonight."
"Good."
Guest Nine looked at him.
"Why good?"
"Mo Tian will complain if you leave without speaking to him."
From the dining hall—
"Correct!"
Guest Nine stared.
Shen Yuan looked toward the building.
"Ancient cultivators have excellent hearing."
"Unfortunately."
That might have been a joke.
Progress.
Later that night—
Mo Tian sat beside Guest Nine beneath the same eaves.
For a long time—
neither spoke.
Finally:
"You still hate sweet tea?"
Guest Nine looked at the cup in their hand.
"I don't know."
"You did."
"When?"
"Before."
"Before what?"
Everything.
Mo Tian didn't say it.
Instead:
"You also hated thunderstorms."
Guest Nine looked toward the clear sky.
"I don't remember."
"You used to hide in Fifth's alchemy room."
"Why?"
"Because the furnace was louder."
Guest Nine turned.
"That makes no sense."
"You said thunder couldn't scare you if you couldn't hear it."
A pause.
"That sounds stupid."
"You were young."
"I was never young."
Mo Tian smiled sadly.
"Yes, you were."
Guest Nine became silent.
Mo Tian looked at them.
Not the Unborn.
Not the Ninth.
Not a beacon.
His sibling.
"Stay a few days."
"Why?"
"So I can remind you of things."
"I erased them."
"I know."
"On purpose."
"I know."
"Some shouldn't return."
Mo Tian nodded.
"Then I'll remind you of the useless ones."
Guest Nine looked at him.
"The useless ones?"
"You hated sweet tea."
"You cheated at chess."
"You once stole Third Brother's shoes."
A voice came from somewhere across the mountain.
"I KNEW IT!"
Guest Nine looked toward Xuankong's residence.
Mo Tian began laughing.
After several seconds—
Guest Nine did too.
Quietly.
For the first time—
Cloudveil's Ninth sounded less like an ancient mystery.
And more like someone's younger sibling.
The next morning—
Lu Chen woke before sunrise.
This was unusual.
Mostly because Lin Yue woke him.
By throwing a pebble through his window.
Lu sat up.
"What—"
"Training."
"It's dark."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Master's orders."
Lu looked outside.
Lin stood below.
Jian beside her.
Mo Tian sat in a chair.
Someone had apparently carried the chair there.
Probably Mo Tian.
Shen Yuan stood in the courtyard.
Lu remembered yesterday.
"Oh."
He dressed quickly.
All three disciples stood before Shen Yuan.
Lin Yue.
Qi Refining Third Stage.
Jian Wuchen.
Middle Sword Foundation.
Second Fold of the Ninefold Heaven-Severing Sword Scripture.
Lu Chen.
No realm whatsoever.
Somehow still dangerous.
Mo Tian sat to one side.
Xuankong watched from a rooftop.
Guest Nine stood beneath a tree.
Chen An had wisely moved several fragile decorations indoors.
Shen Yuan looked at his disciples.
"Today we're changing how you train."
Lin waited.
Jian listened.
Lu raised his hand.
"Does the new method explode less?"
"That depends on you."
His hand lowered.
Shen Yuan looked at Lin.
"Your cultivation speed isn't the problem."
Then Jian.
"Neither is yours."
Finally Lu.
"Yours technically doesn't exist."
Lu looked hurt.
"Master."
"Your strength does."
That helped.
Slightly.
Shen Yuan continued.
"From today onward, realm advancement isn't enough."
Lin understood first.
"Control."
"Partly."
Jian spoke.
"Understanding."
"Yes."
Shen Yuan looked at the three.
"Cloudveil has enough inheritances."
"Enough ancient techniques."
"Enough dead experts."
Mo Tian raised a hand.
"Technically—"
"No."
Mo Tian lowered it.
"You can learn from what came before."
"You should."
"But your techniques are foundations."
"Not cages."
Shen Yuan looked at Lin.
"The Nine-Yin Lunar Scripture can teach you how to cultivate."
Then Jian.
"The Ninefold Heaven-Severing Sword Scripture can rebuild your path."
Then Lu.
"The Primordial Chaos Scripture can give you a language for something that barely has one."
He paused.
"But eventually—"
"each of you has to answer something those scriptures cannot."
Silence.
Lin's hand rested on Moonfrost.
Jian touched Clear Wind.
Lu looked at his palms.
Shen Yuan pointed toward the training field.
"So."
"We start with the most urgent problem."
Lu slowly looked around.
Lin looked at him.
Jian looked at him.
Mo Tian looked at him.
Lu sighed.
"Me."
"Correct."
"Why?"
Shen Yuan looked toward the Chaos Body Refinement Chamber.
The wall had been repaired.
Mostly.
One crack remained.
"Evidence."
Lu followed his gaze.
"Oh."
Lin stood opposite him.
"First exercise," she said.
Lu looked around.
"No Chaos Qi?"
"No."
"Spiritual energy?"
"No."
"Technique?"
"No."
Lu became suspicious.
"What am I doing?"
Lin raised her fists.
"Learning exactly where your body is."
Lu blinked.
"That sounds less threatening than I expected."
Lin disappeared.
Lu barely raised his arms.
Her palm struck them.
BOOM.
Lu flew backward.
He twisted.
Landed.
Skidded thirty feet.
Then stopped.
Silence.
Xuankong lowered his wine.
Mo Tian's eyebrow rose.
Jian watched carefully.
Lu looked at his arms.
No fracture.
No serious injury.
He looked at Lin.
"You hit me."
"Yes."
"Hard."
"Not very."
Lu looked toward Shen Yuan.
"Was that not very?"
"No."
Lu became concerned.
Lin attacked again.
This time Lu dodged.
Barely.
Her second strike clipped his shoulder.
He spun.
Recovered.
Then—
for the first time—
his physical strength answered instinctively.
Lu stepped.
The stone beneath him shattered.
He appeared beside Lin.
Fast.
Much faster than before.
His fist stopped several inches from her.
Lin's eyes changed.
Lu grinned.
"Got you."
Frost appeared.
His sleeve froze.
Lin's fingers were already touching his ribs.
"Dead."
Lu's grin vanished.
"That's unfair."
"Why?"
"You have Qi."
"You have a body stronger than your realm."
"I don't have a realm."
"Exactly."
Jian almost smiled.
Shen Yuan watched carefully.
Not merely stronger disciples.
Disciples who understood what their strength actually meant.
After an hour—
Lu lay on the ground.
Lin remained standing.
Her breathing was slightly heavier.
Only slightly.
Qi Refining Third Stage spiritual energy circulated smoothly through two Lunar Channels.
She had used less than half her Qi.
Lu stared at the sky.
"I think I understand my body now."
Lin looked down.
"Good."
"It hurts."
"Also good."
Shen Yuan looked at Jian.
"Your turn."
Lu sat upright.
"He's fighting me too?"
"No."
Jian walked onto the field.
Clear Wind remained sheathed.
"You're learning circulation."
Lu frowned.
"I can't circulate."
"That's the problem."
Jian placed two fingers against his own chest.
"My Sword Qi begins here."
"Sword Heart," Lu said.
"Yes."
"It enters the First Sword Meridian."
"Then the second?"
"No."
"It returns."
Lu blinked.
Jian continued.
"Then it enters again."
"Farther."
"Returns."
"Again."
"Returns."
Lu looked confused.
"That sounds inefficient."
"It's why my meridians still exist."
Another direct hit.
Mo Tian covered his mouth.
Jian ignored him.
"The scripture doesn't teach me to force Sword Qi forward."
"It teaches me to establish a path that can survive the return."
Lu looked at his hand.
Jian continued:
"If the Qi cannot return to its origin, the cycle was never stable."
Something changed in Lu's expression.
He looked toward Mo Tian.
Then Shen Yuan.
Then his own palm.
Gray Qi appeared.
Five breaths.
Stable.
Lu whispered:
"Return."
The Chaos Qi trembled.
Then differentiated violently.
Shen Yuan dispersed it immediately.
Lu coughed.
"Not that."
Mo Tian laughed.
"No."
But Lu was smiling.
Because for the first time—
he knew what question to ask.
Not:
How do I force Chaos through my meridians?
Not:
How do I stop Chaos from changing?
But:
Where can Chaos return without being told what it has to become?
The system appeared.
[Disciple Lu Chen has begun conceptualizing the First Anchor.]
[Mission Progress: 84% → 86%.]
Lu stared at the notification only Shen could see nothing of.
Shen Yuan smiled faintly.
Good.
Not solved.
But moving.
The sun rose higher over Cloudveil Peak.
Mist drifted between ancient buildings.
No realm barrier screamed.
No ancient seal failed.
No corpse woke.
No Immortal descended.
For one morning—
Cloudveil was simply a mountain.
A master.
Three disciples whose cultivation was advancing quickly enough to make ordinary sect standards increasingly irrelevant.
A steward calculating repair costs.
A damaged ancient cultivator arguing about Chaos theory.
Several old ghosts slowly remembering how to behave like people.
And techniques that were finally beginning to do what techniques were supposed to do.
Teach.
Lin Yue's Nine-Yin Lunar Scripture carried her deeper into Qi Refining.
Jian Wuchen's Ninefold Heaven-Severing Sword Scripture rebuilt a path that had once been destroyed.
Lu Chen's Primordial Chaos Scripture waited for its cultivator to finish something no predecessor could give him.
Shen Yuan took another sip of tea.
Their strength could grow as quickly as their talent allowed.
He wasn't going to slow them down simply because the rest of the Mortal Realm cultivated more slowly.
His job was harder than that.
Make sure their foundations survived the speed.
Make sure their understanding caught up.
And make sure that when the day came that their scriptures could no longer tell them what the next step was—
they knew how to take it anyway.
Across the field, gray Qi erupted.
BOOM.
Smoke rose.
Shen Yuan lowered his cup.
Lu Chen emerged from the cloud.
"Master!"
"What?"
"I think I almost understood it!"
Shen Yuan looked at the new crater.
"How close?"
Lu considered.
"Closer than the crater suggests."
Shen Yuan stood.
"Again."
Lu grinned.
This time—
Shen Yuan did too.
