Chapter 587: Chapter 587
"The working is now—" Satou said.
"Stable," Chronus said. "The eighty-three percent completion rate was the completion rate of the spatial boundary. The eighth anchor’s function is independent of the boundary completion percentage." He looked at Satou. "At this point, disrupting the anchor ring won’t stop the working. And destroying the central mechanism—" He paused. "—won’t stop it either. The eighth anchor’s stability function is self-sustaining. It will continue operating and the working will continue building toward completion regardless of what happens to the visible architecture."
The sound of screaming continued from the eighty thousand suspended people.
Not pain screaming. Satou had spent enough time in combat to know the difference. This was the screaming of disorientation, of something experienced without context — the sudden shift from suspended stillness to a different state, confusing and overwhelming in the absence of any framework for understanding what was happening.
They can feel it, Satou thought. Whatever the eighth anchor activated, they can feel it starting.
He heard movement behind him — two presences entering the clearing at speed, from the northwest and northeast simultaneously, the specific signature of Morgana and Seraphina moving at maximum velocity toward the clearing’s center.
He didn’t take his eyes off Chronus.
The Tenth Seat watched him steadily.
"Before," Satou said, "you told me the working was at eighty-three percent. You were accurate."
"Yes," Chronus said.
"How long," Satou said.
Chronus understood the question without it being completed.
"The stability mechanism will allow the working to complete at its current progression rate," he said. "Without interference — which I have now ensured — completion in approximately—" He paused. "Forty hours."
Forty hours.
Seraphina arrived at the clearing’s edge.
Then Morgana.
Satou didn’t speak. He felt Morgana come to stand beside him — heard her breathing, quick from the run but controlled, the specific controlled breathing of someone managing their response while processing what they were seeing. The light above the central mechanism. The sound of the screaming. Chronus standing in the clearing with the complicated expression.
"Satou," Morgana said.
He heard everything in the single word — the question, the assessment she’d made on her way here, the conclusion she’d reached before arriving, the thing she needed to hear confirmed.
"We’re too late," he said.
Chronus looked at both of them.
He looked at Morgana specifically — the specific, direct look of someone seeing the person they’d aimed at, seeing the look on that person’s face when the aim became impact.
Morgana’s expression was completely still.
Her eyes moved from the light to the central mechanism to Chronus and stayed there.
Chronus looked at her for a long moment.
"I know," he said, quietly, to Morgana specifically, "that this doesn’t change what I did to Freda. Or to Cassius. Or to Vael’kira." He held her gaze. "I’m not asking you to forgive any of it. I’m not offering anything to mitigate it. I’m telling you that what I did, I did knowing the cost, and knowing that you would be here when it completed." He paused. "And that watching you understand that you were part of the mechanism — that the years you spent protecting his city was the thing that positioned you to be occupied with the northwest anchor when the eighth anchor needed to complete — that was the part I didn’t—"
He stopped.
"That was the part I didn’t find satisfying," he finished. "Whatever you expected me to say. It was not that."
The ambient temporal field of the working held them all in the moment before whatever came next.
Chronus looked at the light above the mechanism.
Then he smiled — not the complicated smile of someone finding something genuinely funny but the simpler smile of someone who had done what they came to do.
And he laughed.
A single, clear, unperformed sound.
The laugh faded.
What replaced it was quieter — the specific quiet of someone who had completed one task and was already moving to the next, the transition from satisfaction to function happening in the same breath.
Chronus raised his right hand.
Not toward Satou. Not toward Seraphina. Toward Morgana.
The gesture was small — a casual motion, fingers spreading slightly, the kind of movement a person made when they released something they’d been holding. The dimensional rift that opened behind Morgana wasn’t dramatic. It didn’t roar or blaze or announce itself. It simply appeared — a seam in the air approximately seven feet tall and three feet wide, the specific texture of a space between spaces, dark in the way that darkness between dimensions was dark, carrying the quality of somewhere that wasn’t here.
Morgana felt it before she saw it.
A thousand years of magical sensitivity gave her a fraction of a second — enough to begin turning, enough to begin the response that her instincts had already calculated.
Not enough.
The dimension didn’t pull her into it. The dimension expanded around her — a specific technique, the seal constructing itself not by moving Morgana but by moving the spatial boundary, placing the rift’s interior around where she was standing rather than drawing her toward the rift’s location. The distinction mattered because it meant her defensive response — the outward ward she’d begun generating in that fraction of a second — was already inside the sealed space when it activated, unable to anchor to the external world.
The seam closed.
Where Morgana had been standing, there was now ordinary forest floor.
The silence that followed was the specific silence of a space where something had been removed.
Satou stared at the spot.
Seraphina’s wings snapped fully open.
Chronus lowered his hand. His expression was the expression of someone who had been planning this specific action for a long time and found the execution of it somewhat anticlimactic compared to the anticipation.
"Finally," he said. "The troublesome mage is dealt with." He paused. "The seal won’t hold indefinitely. Morgana’s power — even sealed — will crack the dimension from inside within approximately twenty-four hours." He looked at Satou. "She’s too strong for any seal I can construct to hold longer than that. Even this one."
