Chapter 588: Chapter 588
He said it like a compliment.
"But twenty-four hours," he continued, "is sufficient."
The rage hit Satou before the thought did.
Not the deliberate, managed anger he usually carried into difficult situations — not the cold focused fury that had sustained him through five days of siege, that had kept him functional through the Ancient God fight, that had been the specific emotional architecture of survival through impossible things. This was different. Faster. The specific rage of someone who had been out-maneuvered by something that had used their own commitment to protect people against them, who had watched a member of their team disappear into a sealed dimension while standing five feet away and unable to stop it.
He moved.
The attack he launched had no specific name in the taxonomy of his ability list. It was the expression of everything simultaneously — Ancient God power fully unleashed, not the measured fraction he’d shown anyone before, not the controlled demonstration he’d given the council chamber or the tactical application he’d been using in the fight so far. The full release. The kind of force that had moved armies at the settlement. The kind of output that had fractured the central mechanism earlier, now directed at a single person rather than a stone structure.
The kind of force that if it landed cleanly could potentially end a Tenth Seat demon lord at half power in one strike.
It didn’t land cleanly.
Something happened between the moment of Satou’s launch and the moment of contact — a deceleration so sudden and so complete that the attack’s momentum went from full force to fractional in the space of approximately two feet. Not a physical barrier. Not a shield that absorbed impact.
A temporal field compression layer — the specific technique Chronus had been maintaining as passive defense since before they’d even spoken, the temporal density barrier that applied just enough time-slowing effect to everything approaching him above a certain velocity threshold to reduce its arrival speed to something his reflexes could process.
The attack hit.
At a fraction of its original force.
Chronus moved through the remaining fraction — not dodging, not blocking, repositioning through temporal displacement in the window the deceleration had created, finding the moment before the attack’s arrival and being somewhere adjacent to it instead of directly in it.
His counter came from the new position.
It hit Satou in the left shoulder with the specific force of a temporal compression strike — time density applied in a concentrated point, not aging, not accelerating, just making the space where Satou’s shoulder occupied more temporally dense than the space around it, the resulting force equivalent to being struck by a very fast object that had the additional characteristic of existing slightly outside normal moment-to-moment flow.
Satou was moved two steps to the right.
He looked at Chronus.
Chronus looked at him.
"The barrier has been active since before we spoke," Chronus said. "I expected this attack. I expected it to be significant." He paused. "It was."
"Then you have a problem," Satou said. "Because that wasn’t my full output."
Something moved in Chronus’s expression — the specific acknowledgment of information that changed calculations.
"No," Chronus said, after a moment. "I didn’t think it was."
======
Seraphina came in from the left.
She’d used the exchange — the three seconds of Satou and Chronus reading each other after the initial contact — to position, her wings carrying her into the elevated approach angle that gave her reality alteration the widest possible field of effect. She wasn’t trying to kill Chronus. She was trying to force him to divide attention — the specific combat logic of someone who understood that a single powerful opponent managed two threats less effectively than one, and that her role in this fight was to be the second threat.
She hit the temporal compression barrier.
It didn’t decelerate her the way it had Satou’s attack — she wasn’t coming in as a concentrated force vector, she was coming in as a being with distributed presence across her wings and body, a different kind of input that the barrier’s velocity threshold handled differently. She slowed. Not stopped. Her reality alteration activated at the barrier’s edge, targeting the barrier’s own nature — from "temporal compression that decelerates approaching objects" to "temporal irregularity that cannot maintain coherent field structure."
The barrier flickered.
One second — one real, concrete second — the barrier’s coherence disrupted by the reality alteration eating at its fundamental definition.
Satou was already inside that second.
[SHADOW ABSOLUTE MOVEMENT + VOID FANG]
He dissolved and emerged at Chronus’s right flank in the same motion, claws active, the void-black existence erasure coating them catching the edge of the barrier in its disrupted state and finding — for the first time — partial purchase.
The strike connected with Chronus’s right arm.
Not the void — the physical connection, the actual contact between Satou’s claws and the Tenth Seat’s physical form at a point where the barrier’s disruption had reduced the deceleration to insufficient.
Chronus’s right arm sustained damage. Not catastrophic — nothing immediately structural. But real. The specific realness of something that had been expecting the barrier to handle everything and found that it hadn’t.
He turned.
His attention moved to Seraphina.
And Satou understood immediately what that meant — the same instinct that had been reading Chronus’s combat logic since the first twenty seconds of their engagement registering the shift. Chronus had calculated that the only way Satou’s shadow movement worked was if the barrier was disrupted first. The only thing that could disrupt the barrier in this fight was Seraphina’s reality alteration. Therefore eliminating Seraphina’s ability to function eliminated the combination’s effectiveness.
He was going to go after her.
"Seraphina," Satou said.
"I know," she said. Her voice was completely level.
She came at Chronus again from a different angle — not trying to reach him, keeping him oriented toward her, demanding his attention, the specific fighting posture of someone who had accepted that their role in this engagement was to be the target.
Chronus moved.
What followed was the specific sequence of someone fighting two opponents who had complementary capabilities — managing the threat geometry, ensuring that his position relative to both never allowed them both clean angles simultaneously, using his temporal displacement to put himself at the position where Satou’s approach required Seraphina to be in a compromised defensive posture and vice versa.
