My Milf Tamer System
Chapter 165: Reconciliation +1
"That sounds terrible."
"That sounds like life."
She kissed his forehead. The only spot on his face that didn’t hurt. Her lips warm. Her hand still holding the ice. Her body steady beside his because someone had to be steady and Elena Vance had been elected to that position by a universe that recognized competence.
"I’ll handle Marcus’s mother," Elena said. "Yuki’s already handling herself. Diana can handle any fallout. Victoria will understand because she’s living the same situation from the other side. The machinery adapts. It always adapts."
"What about Marcus?"
"Marcus is yours. I can’t manage your friendships. I can manage your harem, your schedule, your emotional crisis response protocols, and your laundry rotation. But friendships are yours. You broke this. You fix it."
"How?"
"By being there. By not pushing. By letting him be angry for as long as he needs to be angry and then being the same Lucas he’s always known when the anger burns out." She adjusted the ice. "You didn’t change, Lucas. You just did something that made him see you differently. When he’s ready, he’ll see you the way he always saw you. The version of you that existed before he knew."
"What if that version doesn’t exist anymore?"
"It does. You’re the same person who fell asleep on his couch playing Mario Kart. You’re also the person who slept with his mother. Both are true. He’ll learn to hold both. It’ll take time."
"How much time?"
"More than you want. Less than you fear." She kissed him again. The forehead. The warm spot. "Now stop talking. Let the ice work. I’m going to order Thai food because you haven’t eaten and I can tell because your jaw is clenching which means your blood sugar is low which means you’re going to be cranky and I’m not dealing with cranky on top of punched."
"You can tell my blood sugar from my jaw clenching?"
"I’ve known you for three years. I can tell your blood sugar from the way you breathe." She stood. Crossed to the kitchen. Phone already in hand. "Green curry. Medium. No peanuts because Marcus is allergic and I know you’ll feel weird eating them right now."
"You’re terrifying."
"I’m prepared. There’s a difference." She ordered. Came back. Sat beside him. Took the ice from his hand because he’d let it slip. Held it to his jaw herself. "Rest. I’ve got this."
*My girlfriend is holding ice to my jaw after my best friend punched me because I slept with his mother. She ordered Thai food avoiding peanuts because Marcus is allergic and she knew I’d feel guilty eating them. Elena Vance has thought of everything including the emotional implications of legume consumption. She is the most terrifying person I’ve ever met and I love her with my entire stupid heart.*

*The ice is cold. Elena’s hand is warm. The Thai food is coming. Persephone is staring at me from the bedroom doorway with the expression of a cat who heard raised voices and has decided this is somehow my fault. She’s not wrong.*
*Marcus is out there somewhere. Driving. Thinking. Processing. The son caught between his mother’s happiness and his father’s grief and his best friend’s betrayal and the impossible truth that all three of those people are the same person. The person he played Halo with. The person who held his mom against a kitchen counter. The person who stood there and took the punch because dodging would have been worse.*
*He’ll call. Or he won’t.*
*Both are true.*
*Both are terrifying.*

June 2nd. Lucas’s Apartment. 8:47 PM.
Two weeks. Fourteen days since Marcus walked out. Fourteen days of silence that felt like living inside a held breath. Lucas had gone through the motions, the calendar continuing its color-coded rotation, Elena maintaining the schedule with the precision of a woman who considered routine a form of therapy. Wednesday Diana. Thursday Chelsea and her killer clowns. Victoria’s Foucault essay, finally submitted, returned with an A minus and a single comment in Victoria’s handwriting: "Competent. You can do better. Rewrite paragraph four." He hadn’t rewritten paragraph four. He’d read the comment seventeen times instead.
Marcus hadn’t called.
Aurora monitored his digital footprint with the quiet obsession of an entity who’d learned that friendship meant caring about people who weren’t targets. Marcus’s social media went dark. His gaming accounts showed login times at 3 AM which meant insomnia. His texts to mutual friends were brief, functional, the communications of someone performing normalcy while something inside them restructured.
Elena tracked all of it. She didn’t tell Lucas. She told Aurora. Aurora told Lucas. The chain of intelligence that kept him informed without making him reach out because reaching out would be pushing and pushing would break whatever fragile process Marcus was building inside his silence.
On day twelve, Yuki called.
Lucas picked up on the second ring. Elena watching from the kitchen table, her reading glasses low, her red pen frozen mid-annotation on what appeared to be Diana’s quarterly projections annotated with personal commentary.
"Marcus came to see me." Yuki’s voice was different. Not the flat calm from two weeks ago. Not the broken cracking from the phone call at 2 AM. Something else. Something that sounded from the inside like crying but looked from the outside like laughing.
"Your apartment?"
"The studio. He knocked. I opened the door and he was standing there with the same expression his father had when he sat at the kitchen table with his shoes on. The Tanaka men have a specific way of standing when their world has shifted and Marcus was doing it. Twenty-one years old and already standing like his father." She was crying. The happy tears. The ones that came when something you’d been dreading turned out to be survivable. "He was angry. He said terrible things. He said I broke our family. He said I chose a stranger over his father. He said I was selfish."
"What did you say?"
"I said he was right." Her voice steadying. The zazen breath. The meditation she’d been doing alone in her studio apartment every morning because Yuki Tanaka was learning to center herself without a house or a husband or a man to anchor her. "I said I was selfish. And I said I’d been unselfish for twenty-three years and it nearly killed me and sometimes selfish is just another word for survival."
*She told her son she was selfish. She didn’t defend herself. She didn’t explain. She named the thing and let him have his anger about it because that’s what Yuki does. She holds space for other people’s feelings even when those feelings are about her. She learned that from her mother. From the bread. From waking up at 5 AM and making the house warm for everyone else.*
"Then he was sad," Yuki continued. "The anger went out of him like water draining. He sat on my floor because I don’t have furniture yet and he put his head in his hands the same way his father did and he said ’Mom, I just want you to be happy. Even if it’s weird.’"
Lucas closed his eyes. The relief hitting him somewhere physical, somewhere in his chest that had been tight for fourteen days.
"He said that."
"He said that. Then he held me. On the floor of my studio apartment with the parking lot view and the tea set and his baby photo on the windowsill. He held me and I held him and we cried. The ugly crying. The kind where your nose runs and you don’t care because the person holding you has seen you with worse."
