My Milf Tamer System
Chapter 166: The Angry and Grateful Son
Yuki described the three hours that followed. Marcus asking questions. Not about the affair. About the marriage. About the years before Lucas. About the loneliness she’d carried inside a house that looked fine from the outside. She told him about the invisibility. About Kenji working late. About the years when she stopped being a person and became a function. Wife. Mother. Manager of a household that ran on her labor and didn’t notice her doing it.
"Marcus listened," Yuki said. "He’s young. He doesn’t have the framework for this. But he’s empathetic. That’s his gift. He always could feel what other people felt. When he was six he cried during a nature documentary about orcas. I thought something was wrong with him. Kenji said he’d grow out of it. He didn’t. He just learned to carry other people’s feelings alongside his own."
"What did he say about Kenji?"
"He said ’Dad failed you.’ I told him his father is a good man who didn’t know how to love me the way I needed. That’s not malice. That’s limitation. Marcus understood. He’s been watching his parents for twenty-one years. He knew something was wrong. He just didn’t have words for it until I gave them to him."
"And Lucas?" Yuki paused. Her breath catching. "Marcus asked about you. He said ’Does Lucas make you happy.’ Not ’Are you in love with Lucas.’ Not ’Why Lucas.’ He asked if you make me happy."
"What did you say?"
"I said Lucas sees me. That’s different from love. Sometimes it’s more." She paused. "Marcus was quiet for a long time. Then he said ’That’s what Dad didn’t do. He didn’t see you.’ And I said yes. And Marcus said ’Then I’m angry and grateful at the same time and that’s allowed, right?’"
*He asked if Lucas sees me. Not if Lucas loves me. Not if Lucas is good to me. If he sees me. Marcus understood at twenty-one what took me three years to figure out. Being seen is the thing. Everything else is decoration.*
Yuki’s call ended. She was making tea. In her own apartment. On her own floor. The woman who’d never been just Yuki was learning what just Yuki looked like and the first thing she looked like was someone who called her son’s father to tell him their boy was going to be okay.
That night. 10:47 PM. Lucas’s phone buzzed.
Marcus.
Not a text. A call. The first communication in fourteen days and it was a call because Marcus Tanaka didn’t text when things mattered. He called. The way his mother called. The way his father called. The Tanaka family did their hard conversations in real time because text felt like hiding and hiding wasn’t something they did even when they should.
Lucas picked up. Didn’t speak. Waited.
"I’m still mad at you." Marcus’s voice rough. The voice of someone who’d been crying recently and wasn’t going to admit it. "That hasn’t changed. I want that to be clear. I’m still angry. I still can’t look at you without seeing my mom. I still want to hit something when I think about it."
"I know."
"But I’m less mad." A pause. The sound of Marcus breathing. Steady now. The breathing of someone who’d done some version of zazen meditation himself without knowing that’s what it was. "I went to see her. The studio. It’s tiny. It faces a parking lot. She has a photo of me as a baby on the windowsill. She looks at it every morning while she drinks tea."
"She told me."
"She looks happy, Lucas." His voice cracking on the word. The same crack. The genetic inheritance. "She looks happier than I’ve seen her in years. In a tiny apartment with no furniture and a parking lot view. She’s happier in that studio than she was in our house for the last ten years and that’s. That’s the thing I can’t get past. That’s the thing that makes this complicated. Because you did something terrible and it made my mother happy and those two facts coexist and I hate them both."

?? "Angry and grateful at the same time.
That’s allowed, right?"
```
"That’s allowed," Lucas said. "Being angry and grateful at the same time. That’s the most human thing I’ve ever heard."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. It means you’re holding contradictions. That’s what adults do. Kids pick a side. Adults hold the whole mess and keep going."
"Since when do you dispense wisdom about adulthood? You’re twenty-two."
"I’ve had a weird twenty-two years."
Marcus laughed. The sound surprising both of them. Short. Rough. But real. The first real sound of friendship that hadn’t been there since before the door closed two weeks ago.
"She’s happy," Marcus repeated. "I’m going to be angry and grateful at the same time. That’s my thing now. That’s where I live. Angry at you. Grateful that my mom is smiling for the first time since I was twelve."
"Marcus."
"What."
"I’m sorry."
"I know. Don’t say it again. You’ve said it enough. Apologies don’t fix things. They just acknowledge they’re broken." A pause. "What fixes things is time. And beers. You’re buying beers for the next month. Every time we hang out. You’re buying. That’s your punishment. A month of beers."
"Deal."
"And you’re coming to my mom’s apartment. With me. Next week. She invited both of us for tea and I need you there because I can’t sit across from my mother in a studio apartment drinking tea alone because that’s too much emotional infrastructure for one person."
"You want me to come to tea with your mom."
"I want you to come to tea with my mother in her apartment where she lives alone now because she left her husband for you. I need you to be there because I can’t look at her without thinking about the fact that she’s happy because of you and I need to see you both in the same room so my brain stops splitting you into separate categories. You’re not separate. You’re a package deal now. My mom and my best friend. My mother and the guy who sleeps with mothers. I have to hold both."
*He’s inviting me to tea with his mother. The mother I slept with. The mother who left his father because of me. He wants to sit in her studio apartment and drink tea with both of us because he can’t process us as separate people anymore. Marcus Tanaka is twenty-one years old and he’s doing more emotional labor than most adults ever attempt and he’s doing it while asking me to buy him beer.*
"Next week. What day?"
"Saturday. She makes tea at four. Don’t be late. She’s particular about tea time. You know that."
"I know that."
"Cool." A pause. Longer. The sound of Marcus working up to something. "Lucas."
"Yeah."
"You’re still my best friend. That hasn’t changed. I hate that it hasn’t changed. I wanted to be able to cut you out. I wanted to be the guy who ends a friendship over this. But I can’t. Because you’re in my life like. Like a bad tattoo. Permanent. Stupid. Mine."
"Bad tattoo."
"You heard me." Another pause. "Goodnight, asshole."
"Goodnight, Marcus."
The call ended. Lucas sat on the couch with the phone warm against his palm. The apartment quiet. Elena had disappeared into the bedroom at some point during the call, giving him privacy the way she always did, the strategic withdrawal of a woman who knew when her presence was needed and when it was an obstacle.
Elena appeared in the bedroom doorway. Reading glasses off. Hair down. The platinum catching lamplight. She’d been listening. She always listened. Not through the door. Through the walls. Through three years of learning the rhythms of his breathing and knowing when a phone call was going well and when it was going badly based on the silences between his words.
"Crisis managed?" she asked.
"Crisis." Lucas exhaled. The breath leaving him like something he’d been holding for fourteen days. "Crisis navigated. Not managed. There’s a difference."
