Chapter 451 - 296: Chen Yuan Takes the Initiative, Tricking Ningning and Yaoyao into His Room
"Hm?"
"Well, people from my hometown are pretty superstitious. When I was a kid, my mom had my fortune told. The fortune-teller said I’d face minor disasters and hardships when I grew up and that I needed some god’s blessing for protection. He also said I’d end up marrying a girl older than me. Once she joined the family, all my troubles would supposedly vanish."
"Seriously? That’s ridiculous. He was probably some charlatan." Jiangg Yao burst out laughing. ’Then again, that charlatan actually got it right,’ she thought. ’Whether it’s my sister or me, whoever marries Chen Yuan will end up warding off his misfortune. We’d practically be his lucky stars.’
"I don’t believe in that kind of traditional superstition, but my mom does. She thinks it might be fate, so she’s fine with it."
Similar Destiny Techniques had been practiced in Huaxia for centuries. Since ancient times, the age of marriage wasn’t as flexible as it is today, and it was common for men to marry at fifteen or sixteen. Fortune-tellers arranging marriages would often advise them to take a slightly older woman as a wife. One reason was related to auspicious birth charts, and another was that an older wife could better care for an immature husband and manage the household.
Stuff like that is usually only real if you believe in it.
’It was possible Liu He just liked the sound of it and went along with the fortune-teller’s nonsense, turning it into a self-fulfilling prophecy.’
’As a teacher, how could she be so superstitious?’
In the end, people believe what they want to believe. If Liu He was happy, then everything the fortune-teller said was correct. If she wasn’t happy, then he was just a charlatan.
...
「In the living room.」
At some point, everything had fallen completely silent.
Chen Yuan video-chatted with the two sisters for half an hour, talking about this and that. He stalled until he was sure his parents were asleep and the coast was clear.
He then told the two sisters to wait a moment.
He opened his door and poked his head out, peering around cautiously.
The living room lights were off, leaving it dark and dim. The sofa and chandelier were just hazy silhouettes. Outside the balcony’s French doors, skyscrapers glittered with the brilliant glow of neon lights.
The master bedroom door was shut tight.
Everything was perfectly still.
Chen Yuan pulled his door almost shut and tiptoed into the living room. He fumbled around for something under the coffee table, the RUSTLE RUSTLE of his movements making him sound like a thief. Finally, his hand closed around something, and a grin spread across his face.
He quickly tiptoed back.
"Hello?"
Chen Yuan picked up his phone from the bed.
"Back from the bathroom, Young Master."
"Mhm. When are you two planning on going to sleep?"
"Probably right after this call," Jiangg Yao said with a yawn, rubbing her eyes. "I’m already getting a little sleepy."
"I see..."
"You’re acting strange today, Young Master. What is it you really want to say? You’re beating around the bush, so it must be something important!" Jiangg Yao said, squinting as she studied him.
"Well, I’m a little hesitant since it’s so late. I don’t want to disturb your rest."
"Hesitant about what? Just spit it out..."
"My shoulders really hurt today. I’m not sure if I pulled something. My neck is sore, and my legs ache too... Did I overdo it these past couple of days? I was originally going to call and ask you two to come over and give me a massage, but forget it." Chen Yuan sighed. "It’ll probably be fine after a night’s sleep. You and Ningning are tired too."
"A massage? Right now...?" Jiangg Ning leaned in, looking a little worried. "Was it from going shopping with Yaoyao the other day? Did you get tired?"
"I don’t think so."
"Then you can sneak over, Young Master. Auntie and Uncle are already asleep, anyway," Jiangg Yao said, the corners of her lips curling up as she let out a coy laugh. "I’ll open the door for you~ Come on over, I’ll help you on the bed."
"It hurts too much. I can barely move. I had to hold onto the wall just to get to the bathroom earlier," Chen Yuan said, frowning and feigning agony.
"Is it that bad? No wonder you were in the bathroom for so long," Jiangg Ning said, taking the phone. "Forget it, I’ll come over and help you. We have some liniment at home. We didn’t finish the bottle we bought last time. You probably just pulled a muscle."
"Okay, but that means Yaoyao will be home all by herself," Chen Yuan said, deliberately raising his voice.
"No way! I’m going too!" Jiangg Yao shot to her feet.
"What are you going for?" Jiangg Ning glanced at her. "We don’t need two people. Besides, you’re too rough."
"I’m going to supervise you. A man and a woman alone in a room together in the middle of the night? Too dangerous."
"Nonsense. I know how to behave..." Jiangg Ning’s cheeks flushed slightly, as if a certain thought had just crossed her mind.
"That’s hilarious. The most ironic joke I’ve heard all century," Jiangg Yao said sarcastically, crossing her arms.
Seeing his goal was accomplished, Chen Yuan immediately said, "Fine, fine. Both of you come over in five minutes. I’ll meet you at my door."
...
「After hanging up the phone.」
Chen Yuan kipped up and pumped his fist, his heart pounding with the thrill of a clandestine rendezvous. He pulled out the screwdriver he’d found in the living room and turned on his phone’s flashlight.
Then he began to remove the screws from his doorknob.
The CREAK CREAK of the turning screws sounded like a demon’s low chuckle in the dark night.
「Five minutes later.」
The two sisters appeared stealthily at his door. One was wearing loose-fitting pajamas with a strawberry pattern, the other a nightgown with a mango pattern.
The door opened.
Chen Yuan saw them, opened his mouth without making a sound, and pointed toward his bedroom.
The two sisters exchanged a look, nodded, and followed him.
The three of them hugged the wall, tiptoeing toward the bedroom like cats that had just stolen the cream.
They had no idea this was all a conspiracy orchestrated by Chen Yuan. Once they stepped into this room... there would be no getting out tonight.
This would be another night of them all sleeping together under one blanket.
Spurred on by Mr. and Mrs. Chen, Chen Yuan had made up his mind to take the initiative. When morning came, he would emerge with the two sisters, their cheeks flushed and bashful. Then he’d like to see how his parents could still talk about adopting them as god-daughters!
That would completely shatter their little delusion.
