Chapter 407: Chapter 407: My Husband Killed Marcus Thompson

"Mom, are you really going to listen to Dad and make my sister do... that?" Chloe Thompson’s voice was laced with a complex mix of emotions. She wasn’t a child anymore, so she understood the unspoken implications of her parents’ words.

’She just never imagined her parents would sink this low!’

"Alright, Chloe, stay out of this. Listen to me and give me your sister."

"If we solve this now, your dad won’t turn his attention to you." Catherine Miller’s voice was edged with urgency. She reached her hand out further, her attitude hardening. "Give me your sister. I have two children. I have to protect at least one of them."

’Just like Marcus Thompson said, the younger one wasn’t hers, after all.’

’Exchanging her for my older daughter’s safety... It’s worth it!’

Chloe Thompson understood what her mother was implying and quickly spoke up. "She *is* your child! Look at her, she looks so much like us!"

"You have a mole on your back. I have one, and she has one, too—in the exact same spot! How could she not be your biological daughter?"

"Besides, Mom, you said they’re a rich family. They would definitely keep a close watch on their child. They get regular check-ups, too. If there was really a problem, they would have found out long ago. How could it have gone unnoticed until now?"

As she spoke, Chloe Thompson pulled up her little sister’s shirt, revealing the mole on her back to Catherine Miller.

Although her sister didn’t understand what was happening, her trust in Chloe Thompson kept her still and compliant, without a single thought of resisting.

Seeing the familiar mole, Catherine Miller’s expression froze for a moment.

Ever since she thought she had successfully swapped the babies, she had been too guilt-ridden to even look at the child for the first two days. After that, she had almost always left the girl in her older daughter’s care.

She avoided handling the child herself whenever she could.

On the rare occasions she was in the mood, she might play with her for a bit. But even then, she couldn’t stop her heart from softening or feeling affection for the little girl.

At first, she thought it was just because the child was so obedient and cute that she felt compassion. She was afraid she wouldn’t be able to bear giving her back later, so she had forced herself to remain distant.

’To think this was her own biological child all along!’

So it was only now that Catherine Miller discovered the mole on her younger daughter’s back.

’Does that mean their scheme never succeeded from the very start?’

"But... but the novels I read never said it would be like this," Catherine Miller said, her voice filled with bewilderment as she tried to defend herself.

Chloe Thompson fought back the urge to curse at her mother. "Novels are just novels, Mom! How can you believe everything they say?"

"You need to go tell Dad no right now. If you really hand my sister over to him, we’ll regret it when it’s too late!"

Catherine Miller seemed to finally snap out of it. She stumbled out of the room, pulling the door shut behind her.

A moment later, the sounds of a furious argument, followed by things being smashed, came from outside.

Chloe Thompson clamped her hands tightly over her little sister’s ears, trying to shield her from the commotion.

Then came a cry of pain, followed by the slam of the front door.

A few moments later, Catherine Miller knocked on the door. "Chloe, leave your sister in the room. Come out and help me clean up the living room."

When Chloe Thompson stepped out, she saw Catherine Miller standing in the middle of the living room, holding a blood-stained kitchen knife.

All around her, debris from the fight was strewn across the floor.

"I slashed his arm, and he ran off. He definitely won’t dare to come back for a while." Catherine Miller managed to force a smile, but what had just happened was clearly too much for her.

Discovering that the daughter she had ignored for years was actually her own, on top of her sudden burst of courage in slashing Marcus Thompson—it was all a bit overwhelming for her.

Chloe Thompson said nothing, simply starting to clean up the battlefield in the living room.

But their peaceful days didn’t last long. A few days later, a beautiful young woman carrying a daughter about the same age as Chloe’s sister came to their door.

The first words out of her mouth were, "My husband killed Marcus Thompson."

The words landed like a bombshell on Chloe Thompson and her mother. Catherine Miller stared at the woman in disbelief, her voice trembling. "What on earth happened?"

"What do you mean, your husband killed Marcus Thompson?"

Although their divorce had been bitter, Catherine Miller had genuinely loved Marcus Thompson when they first married. They’d had their share of sweet, passionate moments.

But ever since Marcus Thompson had become addicted to gambling and refused to change his ways, their relationship had completely shattered.

But to say she felt nothing for him now would be a lie.

Hearing this news so suddenly, Catherine Miller didn’t know how to react.

And unlike Chloe Thompson, who was merely confused, Catherine Miller recognized the woman in front of her at a glance. It was the very woman whose baby she had tried to swap.

Catherine Miller’s gaze shifted to the child in the woman’s arms. Her features were delicate, and the mother and daughter looked like they were carved from the same mold.

At that, Catherine Miller finally let go of her delusion and accepted what her daughter had told her.

The woman nodded at Chloe Thompson and her mother. "Marcus Thompson tried to kill my husband and take his place, but my husband found out and killed him in self-defense."

"I came here today to let you know. Our two families should go to the police together."

After all, someone was dead. Reporting it to the police wasn’t optional.

"Yes, yes, let’s go now." Catherine Miller scrambled to grab her soundly sleeping younger daughter from the bedroom, then pulled Chloe Thompson along. The five of them set off for the police station.

They reported the crime, led the police to the scene, and then went to take the suspect into custody.

It was then that Catherine Miller saw Marcus Thompson’s twin brother, Kai Thorne, for only the second time. He was the child their parents had given away shortly after birth, claiming they couldn’t afford to raise him.

He looked identical to Marcus Thompson. If not for their different demeanors, it would have been nearly impossible to tell them apart if they stood side-by-side.

They thought the case would be closed quickly, but then Catherine Miller happened to see the wound on Kai Thorne’s arm, and the sight jolted her.

"Wait a minute! That wound... that’s the one I gave Marcus Thompson’s arm a few days ago! Why do you have it?"

"Unless... you’re actually Marcus Thompson? And the one who’s dead is Kai Thorne?" Catherine Miller’s face was a mask of panic.

Although she hadn’t gotten a close look at the wound when she’d inflicted it, she knew exactly how much force she had used.

And the wound on Kai Thorne’s arm—the angle, the depth—it looked almost identical to the cut she had made!

Hearing this, Kai Thorne’s wife, Eliza Lynch, clutched her child and strode over to his side. She stared at the wound on his arm, and her face suddenly changed.

"Mrs. Lynch, weren’t you aware that your husband had a wound on his arm?" the officer escorting Kai Thorne asked, his tone filled with suspicion as he watched Eliza Lynch’s reaction.

Eliza Lynch’s face was grim as she shook her head. "When he came back two days ago, he locked himself in the study and wouldn’t let anyone in."

"He only opened the door today to tell me that Marcus Thompson had tried to kill him, and that he had killed him in self-defense."
