My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 406: Give Me Your Sister
Chapter 406: Chapter 406: Give Me Your Sister
Evan Keller watched the chaotic scene, pulled out a tranquilizer gun, and fired a shot at a man hiding behind a sofa.
The well-built man had been hiding, trying to figure out an escape route, but before he could come up with a plan, a tranquilizer dart suddenly hit him, taking him down.
His body stiffened, his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed onto the floor.
His fall was like someone hitting the pause button on the chaotic scene.
Everyone inside stared at Evan Keller in terror. ’That cop actually dared to shoot!’
’I can’t move. If they single me out for moving around and shoot me dead, there’s no one I can complain to!’
Soon, everyone in the room fell silent.
Evan Keller waved his hand, signaling the officers behind him to come out and take the suspects away. Once he confirmed no one was left behind, he led the large group back to the police station.
Once she was sure Evan Keller had arrested everyone, Zoe Sawyer closed the door.
"Shouldn’t we take this chance to arrest the boss before he realizes what’s happening?" Zoe Sawyer asked, looking at Heath Hale and the Chief standing behind her.
’Otherwise, we’ll tip him off. If he gets his guard up, it won’t be so easy to deal with him!’
The Chief shook his head. "Not yet. We want him to know."
"Let’s wait for him to make a move. When we arrest him then, we might uncover even more dirt."
Hearing this, Zoe Sawyer nodded in sudden understanding. ’So they’re letting out the line to catch a bigger fish.’
"Alright, you know what to do next. I’m heading back to my office. Contact me if anything comes up." The Chief waved to Zoe Sawyer and the others, then walked toward his office.
He had another case waiting for him there; he didn’t have time to wait around.
When the Chief returned to his office, he saw the file left on his desk by the captain of Team Two.
After reading through the entire file, the Chief rubbed his temples, a headache forming. No wonder his subordinates said the case was complicated. The relationships involved were a real mess.
It didn’t just involve a pair of brothers separated since childhood, but also some kind of swapped-at-birth heiress situation.
The Chief stared at the file, his head throbbing. He wasn’t sure how to even begin untangling it all.
’This isn’t a novel, so why does everything have to be so damn complicated!’
The deceased, Marcus Thompson, was a real estate agent. But in life, he was an avid gambler who threw every bit of money he got his hands on onto the gambling table.
Sometimes, when he was deep in the red, he would borrow from loan sharks, but he could never pay them back.
With the interest compounding, he ended up with a massive gambling debt. His wife, unable to stand the life of having debt collectors show up at their door every other day, divorced him and left with their two daughters.
Without his wife’s restraining influence, Marcus Thompson’s behavior became even more extreme. He sold their house, paid off his debts, and immediately started gambling again.
After being maliciously set up, Marcus Thompson’s debts grew larger and larger, reaching a point where he could no longer afford to repay them.
To pay off his gambling debts, that scumbag Marcus Thompson set his sights on his own daughters.
One was a girl under five, still in preschool.
He knew some people who were very interested in children of that age. If he just sent the child over a few times, all his debts would be wiped clean!
The other was thirteen. If he looked around, he could probably find a "client" for her, too. That way, he’d have the money to get back on his feet!
"Are you insane?! Marcus! Those are your daughters!" Marcus Thompson’s ex-wife, Catherine Miller, stared at the man before her in disbelief, unable to process what she had just heard.
"Catherine, I have no other choice. If I don’t pay them back soon, those guys said they’ll chop off my hands and harvest my organs."
"I’m still so young! I don’t smoke or drink, I’m healthy. If they really take my organs, the rest of my life will be ruined!" Marcus Thompson knelt before Catherine Miller, clinging to her leg, his voice filled with desperation.
He couldn’t bear to imagine what his life would be like without his hands, with some of his organs removed.
’No, absolutely not!’
’That can’t be allowed to happen!’
"So you can’t be ruined, but my daughters can be?! Is that it?" Catherine Miller’s face was filled with fury. She pulled her younger daughter behind her, her eyes fixed on Marcus Thompson, wary of his next move.
The thirteen-year-old girl stood by her mother’s side, blocking Marcus Thompson’s greedy gaze from her younger sister.
But in the next second, she heard something unbelievable.
Fear seemed to have scrambled Marcus Thompson’s brain. With trembling lips, he blurted out the words he’d kept hidden deep inside: "What’s there to be afraid of?! That little brat isn’t your daughter anyway. Don’t tell me after raising her for a few years, you actually think of her as your own, do you?"
"Our real daughter is living the good life with a rich family right now!"
The color drained from Catherine Miller’s face. She slapped Marcus Thompson hard across the cheek, then turned to her older daughter standing beside her. "Take your sister back to the room first. Let Mom handle this."
The girl nodded, dazed. She carried her oblivious little sister back to their room and closed the door.
Perhaps feeling it wasn’t soundproof enough, the girl pulled a blanket over her own head and her sister’s.
’What was Dad just saying? That she isn’t my real sister?’
The girl’s expression was blank as she looked at her sister nestled obediently in her arms. A flicker of doubt crossed her eyes.
’My sister looks so much like me. Her little nose, her monolids, even the mole on her back... they’re all identical to Mom’s.’
’How could she not be my sister?’
’Right, they must have gotten it wrong!’
But the incident still left a mark on the girl’s heart. She couldn’t help but recall her mother’s usual behavior.
’Mom is a little neglectful of my sister. I’m the one who takes care of her day-to-day. When I go to school, she gets dropped off at preschool, and I’m the one who picks her up when my classes are over.’
’But none of that proves she isn’t Mom’s biological daughter!’
’Besides, Mom sometimes holds and teases her, and the look on her face is the same as when she looks at me. How could that be fake?!’
Looking at her sister, who resembled her in every way, the girl once again convinced herself that her parents must have been mistaken. Or maybe... maybe they had succeeded in swapping them, but someone had swapped them back in time.
She had read plenty of novels with plots like this. If the other family really was rich, then it was even more likely!
The girl made a silent vow: she absolutely could not let her parents be alone with her sister! At the same time, she had to find out exactly who that rich family was!
Just as the girl’s thoughts were racing, Catherine Miller pushed open the door and walked in.
Seeing her two daughters huddled under the blanket, a look of guilt crossed her face.
But the moment she opened her mouth, her words made the girl instinctively tighten her embrace on her little sister.
"Chloe, be a good girl and give me your sister."
