Chapter 501: Chapter 501: Didn’t We Agree Not to Ask the Old Man for Money?

Under Mr. Donovan’s displeased gaze, and with Evan Keller and the others watching, Mrs. Donovan began to speak. She ticked off her father’s usual hobbies on her fingers. "My dad liked to go for walks, watch people play chess, and randomly strike up conversations with strangers on the street.

But not many people were patient enough to listen to him, so he usually ended up chatting with homeless people or others who just sat around on the street all day."

’The latter group wasn’t so bad,’ she thought. ’At least their clothes were clean and tidy. If he ran into some lost young person, he could even play the part of a life coach.’

’Listening to those young people express their gratitude made the old man ecstatic, and he only grew more enthusiastic about it.’

’She could understand that part, but what was the deal with the homeless people?’

’She’d run into them several times. The homeless people around her father were always changing, and since she needed favors from him, she could only hurry past and pretend she hadn’t seen a thing every time.’

’She was worried that if she criticized him for it, she would earn her father’s disgust, and then all the benefits would go to someone else.’

Hearing Mrs. Donovan’s answer, Evan Keller quickly made a note of it. He then waved over two team members, telling them to follow Old Man Donovan’s usual routes and find those homeless people. They might be able to get some information out of them.

Old Man Donovan’s residence had been gone over from top to bottom, but there weren’t many useful clues to be found.

Evan Keller and the remaining officers checked everything in the house one last time before leaving with the team and the evidence they had collected.

As for the Donovan siblings, they also had to go back to the station to give their statements.

After returning to the station, Evan Keller had someone take the two of them to an interview room.

He then walked back to his office, wanting to see if Zoe Sawyer and the others had made any new discoveries in the meantime.

"Captain Keller? You’re back just in time," Officer Lee said upon seeing Evan Keller return, handing him the information he had just pulled. "These are the bank records for the Donovan siblings that Coach Hale had me look up."

’Anyway, Coach Hale had ordered the search to make it easier for Captain Keller to proceed with the investigation upon his return. Handing the files over to him directly was just a matter of convenience.’

"Good work. Anything else?" Evan Keller asked as he took the files and began flipping through them.

"We’re still reviewing the surveillance footage, but we’ve tentatively identified the routes of three suspects," Officer Lee reported.

However, before Zoe Sawyer could continue her review, the chief had called. There was an urgent assignment that required her and a partner, so the rest of the canvassing had to be handed over to Officer Lee and the others.

While Evan Keller was looking over the files, Officer Lee told him what Zoe Sawyer had observed: the Donovan siblings pretending to cry over their father’s body.

"All right, I’ve got it." Evan Keller, having heard the full account, nodded in understanding. He closed the file and said, "Keep up the good work. Continue reviewing the surveillance footage, and also look into the places the deceased liked to frequent and the homeless people he used to talk to."

Although he had already assigned people to do the groundwork in the field, a two-pronged approach would definitely be faster.

"Understood!" Officer Lee replied, then returned to his desk to continue with his newly assigned tasks.

Evan Keller put the file away and walked toward the interview room where the Donovan siblings were waiting.

According to the information Officer Lee had gathered, both siblings had recently made several large expenditures, and the frequency of their calls to Old Man Donovan had also increased significantly.

"When are you going to let me leave? I only took a half-day off work," Mrs. Donovan said, anxiously picking at her nails.

’The police had already caught the killer; she just wanted them to figure out what happened quickly and close the case.’

’She was running out of time. If her father’s assets weren’t distributed soon, she didn’t know what she was going to do.’

’Besides, if her older brother found out she had secretly asked their father for money, things would get ugly!’

Next to her, Mr. Donovan wore the same anxious expression. He kept glancing from his phone to Evan Keller, who sat across from him, his impatience obvious.

"Our investigation shows that both of your bank accounts have had several large withdrawals and deposits recently. We’d like to ask you about them," Evan Keller said, placing the file on the table and looking at the two people in front of him.

Mrs. Donovan’s expression grew impatient. "Why on earth are you police asking about that?

You should be focused on solving my father’s case, not grilling us about our bank records."

"Exactly. Can’t you get your priorities straight?" Mr. Donovan added, his expression just as impatient.

Evan Keller tapped the table, drawing their attention back to him. "Although we have a killer in custody," he said, "the full truth of the matter hasn’t been determined. We have to clarify every suspicious detail.

We need to determine if this was a random act or a contract killing.

The conclusion determines the direction of the investigation."

The Donovan siblings weren’t fools; they immediately understood the implication in Evan Keller’s words.

Mr. Donovan slammed his hand on the table and glared at Evan Keller. "What are you implying? That we hired a hitman to kill our own father?

Just because you’re a cop doesn’t mean you can spout nonsense. I’ll sue every last one of you!"

Beside him, Mrs. Donovan adopted the same posture, crossing her arms. Her tone was cold. "We require an explanation."

"There’s no need for either of you to get upset." Evan Keller’s expression remained unchanged by their outburst. "The police have these questions because we’ve found some discrepancies."

Instead, he pulled some documents from the file and slid them across the table. "We’ve found that both of your accounts have made multiple large payments. We tracked these payments and discovered they all went to the same overseas account, which was registered with fraudulent information.

Furthermore, three days before Old Man Donovan’s death, both of you received a large transfer from him. Less than a day later, that money was transferred out again—and both of you sent it to the very same account.

That’s quite a coincidence. So, would the two of you care to explain?"

’Was this a transfer of assets? Or capital flight?’

’He needed to get to the bottom of this.’

Upon hearing that her father had also transferred money to her brother beside her, Mrs. Donovan shot to her feet and glared at him. "You already asked Dad for so much money, and you still had the nerve to ask him for more!

Did you forget what we said? We agreed neither of us would ask him again!"

Mr. Donovan was not happy to hear that.

’If he’d been the only one to ask, he would have had no defense against her accusation.’

"Didn’t you ask the old man for money, too? Why are you allowed to ask, but I’m not?

I’m not about to get the short end of the stick!"
