My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 502: Evidence of the Crime
Chapter 502: Chapter 502: Evidence of the Crime
As he spoke, Mr. Donovan snorted derisively.
’Good thing I wasn’t so naive as to not ask. Otherwise, all of the old man’s money would have gone straight to my sister.’
"Bullshit! That was the first time I asked him for money since I started working! What about you? You ask for money almost every year. How could I possibly have taken more than you?" Mrs. Donovan slammed the table and shot to her feet, her eyes filled with rage and her voice laced with accusation. "You even took Dad’s last bit of pension money. Are you even human?
Dad was the one who paid for your two useless sons to study abroad!"
At the mention of his children, Mr. Donovan’s expression grew more aggressive. "Listen to you talk. You really think you’re some kind of saint?
That was the old man caring for his grandchildren. Don’t think I don’t know. The moment he gave them the tuition money, your vampire of a daughter was on the phone.
You might not have asked Dad for money, but your daughter showed no mercy. She called him eight hundred times a week, practically trying to bleed him dry!"
It was as if some primal code for sibling rivalry had been triggered, and the two Donovans erupted into a vicious argument.
They tore into each other’s weaknesses, their words so harsh it was like they wanted to stomp the other into the mud and leave them for dead.
And it was precisely because they were airing each other’s dirty laundry that they provided Evan Keller with numerous leads and testimonies for his investigation.
Once the two had argued themselves nearly hoarse, Evan Keller slammed his hand on the table, snapping their attention back to him. "That’s enough! This is a police station, not your living room! Remember where you are!"
Mrs. Donovan snapped back to reality. She smoothed the stray hairs at her temples, sat back down, and her tone became slow and deliberate. "Officer, I want to report my brother. He’s a long-time online gambling addict. He gambled away his house and all his savings.
His wife couldn’t stand his habit and divorced him ten years ago. I have reason to suspect that this overseas account is connected to that online gambling."
Mr. Donovan’s expression changed abruptly. Then, remembering he was at the police station, his face twisted for a fleeting moment before he quickly composed himself.
The change was so brief that if Evan Keller hadn’t been watching them intently, he might have missed it.
"What the hell are you talking about!" Mr. Donovan slammed the table, glaring at his sister. Then, as if remembering something, his tone turned mocking. "That’s rich, coming from you. Aren’t you the one who’s always spending money, flirting and confiding in those livestreamers, and then getting so worked up you transfer your kid’s tuition and living expenses to them?
You’re pointing the finger at me? You’re no better!"
Seeing that they were about to start fighting again, Evan Keller tapped the table to get their attention. His voice was cold. "Both of you, remember where you are. Strictly speaking, while online gambling is illegal, it isn’t a criminal offense. At most, it would result in administrative detention and a fine.
Mrs. Donovan’s actions are the same. They don’t typically constitute a criminal offense; they’re a civil matter at worst."
Evan Keller paused here, and just as he expected, he saw a flicker of relief and lingering fear in the siblings’ eyes.
Noticing their bodies relax slightly, Evan Keller spoke again. "However! Lending your personal accounts to others for money laundering and transferring gambling funds is a serious crime."
With that, Evan Keller pulled the last few pages from the stack of documents and slapped them down in front of the Donovan siblings.
It had all started when Zoe Sawyer noticed the siblings were just putting on an act and couldn’t produce any real tears. Sensing something was off, she pointed it out to Heath Hale, who was standing nearby.
Heath Hale acted decisively, immediately arranging for Officer Lee to investigate the pair’s bank transactions.
Finances, especially an elderly parent’s assets, are often the core point of contention in many families.
Until they could figure out why the Bearded Man and his two accomplices had targeted Old Man Donovan, Zoe Sawyer and the others could only speculate about the truth, considering all possibilities.
One of those possibilities was that the children had hired a hitman.
After all, Old Man Donovan owned at least two properties and had a considerable amount of cash on hand.
Initially, Officer Lee quickly pulled the bank records for the Donovan siblings. Aside from a few recent large-sum transfers, nothing else seemed out of the ordinary.
Worried he might have missed something, Officer Lee double-checked, but the results were the same.
Just then, Officer Lee had a flash of insight and shifted his investigation to the financial situations of the siblings’ children.
Mr. Donovan’s two sons were studying abroad. Besides the frequent payments from Old Man Donovan, an anonymous overseas account was also sending them money at a fixed time each month.
To uncover the connection, Officer Lee followed the trail and found evidence that forced him to overturn his previous conclusions.
And the source of all the evidence pointed directly back to the Donovan siblings.
He compiled the evidence and handed it over to Evan Keller upon his return.
Staring at the evidence laid out before them, the siblings’ faces turned deathly pale. The pair who had been arguing so vehemently just moments ago were now silent as the grave, unable to utter a single word.
"Right now, you have two choices. Either you come clean about everything right here, or you go to an interrogation room, be questioned by us, and then come clean about everything," Evan Keller said, tapping the table, his tone leaving no room for argument.
No matter where they went, the outcome was the same: they would have to confess everything they had done.
’If they don’t want to cooperate, that’s fine. They can go suffer a bit in the interrogation room.’
The Donovan siblings heard the threat in Evan Keller’s voice. They were furious, but they were in a position where they had no choice but to bow to the circumstances.
The situation was clear: the police had uncovered all the evidence they thought they had hidden so well.
Back in the interview room, the siblings remained silent for a long time. Three minutes passed. Evan Keller was in no mood to wait them out any longer. He stood up, called two officers over, and had the brother and sister taken to separate interrogation rooms.
"We’ll talk, we’ll talk!" Mrs. Donovan struggled in a panic, repeatedly looking back at Evan Keller as she tried to break free from the officer’s grip.
Mr. Donovan also looked frantic, his eyes darting toward Evan Keller, but their behavior didn’t soften the detective’s resolve.
He had already given them a chance. If they wouldn’t talk, then the interrogation room it was.
Evan Keller stood at the door of the interview room. After a moment’s thought, he started walking in the direction Mrs. Donovan had been taken.
The Donovan siblings were in a similar emotional state, but Mr. Donovan was far more suspicious. As long as he wasn’t the first one to be interrogated, he would start to wonder if his sister had confessed everything and whether she was pinning it all on him.
Once that happened, all Evan would need to do was provoke him a little, and the interrogation would already be halfway to a success.
And just as he’d thought, the moment Mr. Donovan saw Evan Keller walk off in Mrs. Donovan’s direction, he began to panic and speculate.
