My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 504: The Brother and Sister Passing the Buck to Each Other
Chapter 504: Chapter 504: The Brother and Sister Passing the Buck to Each Other
A flash of annoyance crossed Mrs. Donovan’s face. "My brother never reported our cousin as deceased. Instead, he took the bank accounts under his name and started using them for transfers."
For every transaction, Mr. Donovan would get a cut.
With something like online gambling, the volume of transactions is enormous. One per minute would be considered slow.
However, to reduce the risk of exposure, the masterminds behind the operation didn’t funnel all the money through Mr. Donovan’s accounts. They spread it out across many different ones.
Even so, he was still raking in cash.
But that was far from enough. His previous high income had fed Mr. Donovan’s ambition, and he needed more money.
It wasn’t just to maintain his high standard of living, but also for his two children studying abroad.
More importantly, Mr. Donovan wanted to prove that he wasn’t just some useless freeloader who leeched off his parents. He wanted to show that if he put his mind to it, he could make a lot of money.
Driven by this desire, Mr. Donovan started trying to climb the ladder. Soon, his ambition was noticed by the higher-ups, and they gave him an opportunity.
To drag his own family into it.
The moment he heard this request, the first person who came to Mr. Donovan’s mind was his younger sister.
’Didn’t she always mock me for having no self-control, for being unable to quit gambling to the point that my wife divorced me?’
’Well, now that you’re going through something similar, let’s see you stay so calm.’
’Once we’re both stuck in the muck, neither of us will have any room to talk.’
With this in mind, Mr. Donovan laid out all of his sister’s weaknesses to them without reservation.
And that’s what led to the "damsel in distress" situation, where Mrs. Donovan was "rescued" and slowly fell into the trap.
As for the person in the livestream chat who was competing with her for the top spot, they were a real person and also a target customer for this group.
After all, they wouldn’t set up such a large-scale operation for just one target.
The more people who fell into their trap, the better.
When Mrs. Donovan came to him for help, Mr. Donovan knew it was in the bag.
And because he was the first to successfully bring a family member into the fold, he was promoted to a small team leader in charge of three or four people. The bank cards he had been using were then handed over to Mrs. Donovan.
Gradually, as Mrs. Donovan watched the commissions roll in, she paid off her debts and, just like her brother, began to spend extravagantly.
As long as people kept gambling and they didn’t get caught, their money would never run out.
To prevent people from getting suspicious, the two agreed to occasionally go back and mooch off their father just like before, to maintain their personas.
But they hadn’t been living it up for long before their father passed away. Their behavior in front of the body drew the attention of the police, who then investigated their bank transactions, exposing everything.
"So, according to your statement, you were set up by your own brother, forced to come to him for money, and then led step-by-step into your current situation, is that right?" Evan Keller looked at the written statement, tapping his pen on the table as he asked.
Mrs. Donovan nodded frantically. "Yes! That’s exactly it! I was forced and tricked!
I thought about calling the police at first, but I looked into it. In cases like this, it’s considered voluntary. Even if I was tricked at the beginning, he wouldn’t be legally required to compensate me.
I had no other choice. I couldn’t resort to stealing or robbing, so I had no choice but to go to my brother."
As she said this, a look of remorse appeared on her face, as if she deeply regretted not being able to resist the temptation.
Evan Keller watched Mrs. Donovan with a cold gaze. She was smart. Her statement seemed airtight, and every word was crafted to paint herself as an innocent victim who had also been set up.
But an interrogation is never about hearing just one side of the story.
"Alright, I understand. Thank you for your cooperation." Evan Keller gathered the statement, stood up, and spoke to Mrs. Donovan.
Seeing the two of them about to leave the interrogation room, Mrs. Donovan was suddenly struck by a terrible premonition. She quickly called out, "Where are you going? Now that my statement is done, when can I leave?"
Evan Keller paused at the doorway, turning back to Mrs. Donovan. "Your statement is done, but Mr. Donovan’s isn’t."
"As for when you can leave? That will depend on both of your statements, and then on the verdict."
After saying this, Evan Keller didn’t linger and led his colleague away.
Hearing this answer, Mrs. Donovan anxiously chewed on her fingernails. ’If my brother hears my statement, he’ll definitely contradict it.’
’He might even try to sling all the mud onto me.’
’If they had known this day would come, the two of them should have gotten their stories straight from the beginning.’
But then, they had never imagined they would one day be caught.
No, perhaps they had considered the possibility for a fleeting moment, but they always fell back on the wishful thought that they would surely never be caught.
Meanwhile, things were unfolding exactly as Mrs. Donovan had feared.
After hearing Evan Keller’s brief summary, Mr. Donovan slammed his hand on the table, his voice filled with indignation. "What a load of bullshit! Painting herself as some poor, forced victim!
"Yes, I admit I gave the higher-ups some information about her at the start, but she figured out what that guy was all about after just two days of contact with him!"
Evan Keller didn’t say a word. He simply raised his hand, signaling for the recorder sitting behind him to write it all down.
It was all evidence.
In Mr. Donovan’s telling, the sequence of events was more or less the same as Mrs. Donovan’s. The only difference was in their descriptions of Mrs. Donovan’s own actions.
In Mrs. Donovan’s version, she was set up and forced into it. She claimed she only gave in because of her debts and had no choice but to join them and help with their dirty work. Meanwhile, her brother, Mr. Donovan, knew everything but never considered lending a hand. He was even prepared to collude with the group to push her deeper into the mire, making her wallow in the filth with them. Finally, their father died unexpectedly, and their strange behavior led to their capture and the investigation that uncovered everything.
In Mr. Donovan’s version, however, while he admitted he was no saint and had indeed set up his own sister, he claimed Mrs. Donovan had figured out the whole situation after just a few meetings with the person they sent.
Her later choice to join them was purely due to her own greed and dissatisfaction with her life.
The money she’d spent and the debts she’d incurred were all because she was vain, enjoyed the feeling of being fawned over, and got carried away.
As for her claims of being forced, that was utter nonsense. She shouldn’t even think about slinging all the mud onto him!
Mr. Donovan poured out everything he knew in a single torrent.
"Officer, you can’t let her fool you!"
