Chapter 505: Chapter 505: Who Will Old Man Donovan Bring Home?

After saying all that, Mr. Donovan still made sure to incriminate his sister.

"Anything else you want to say? For instance, about the person who contacted you? Or about who got you to drag your own family into this?" Evan Keller asked, tapping his fingers on the table.

The crisp sound drew Mr. Donovan’s attention back.

This was the most important part.

Mrs. Donovan had been pulled in later. As soon as she got involved, she took over her late cousin’s bank account and picked up where Mr. Donovan had left off. She had no way of contacting or even knowing the people higher up.

Mr. Donovan, on the other hand, was different. He was the one who had actively sought to get involved from the very start.

He must have a way to contact the higher-ups.

At this question, Mr. Donovan nervously licked his lips. "I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve already told you everything I know.

Besides, those people always contacted me with a burner SIM. They’d toss it after one use, so I have no way of contacting them."

As he spoke, Mr. Donovan reached up to touch his nose, then seemed to realize how obvious the gesture was.

His hand froze mid-scratch. He slowly lowered it, pretending nothing had happened.

Evan Keller watched the man’s every move without a word, then began gathering his things to leave, his face a blank mask. Growing anxious, Mr. Donovan shouted after him, "Officer! I really have told you everything!"

"Mr. Donovan, don’t take the police for fools. We gave you a chance to confess, an opportunity to make amends. If you don’t take it, then it’ll be too late to talk once we discover something on our own." Evan Keller stopped and stared at Mr. Donovan, delivering this final line before leaving with his team.

By the time he returned to the office, Sean Hughes was already back.

"You’re back," Evan Keller said upon seeing Sean Hughes. He tossed the statement he was holding onto the table and sat down. "How’s Miss Rowan holding up?"

Sean Hughes picked up the statement and answered the question. "She’s badly shaken and a little clingy. I asked Vivian Dunn and Beau to keep an eye on her for me."

The woman had social anxiety and mostly kept to herself at home, rarely interacting with anyone.

Then she was suddenly told that one of her neighbors was hiding a body, while the other was watching her menacingly, ready to make a move at any time.

If she hadn’t reacted quickly and called the police, she might already be a corpse. And on top of all that, there was the inescapable, putrid smell.

A sudden crisis like that would be a massive psychological shock to any ordinary person.

It was only natural that Wren Rowan would grow attached to a female officer.

However, Sean Hughes had to get back to the case and couldn’t stay with her indefinitely, which was why he had ultimately asked Vivian Dunn and Beau to watch over her.

"These siblings are something else," Sean Hughes remarked, flipping through the statement. "Both are desperately trying to throw the other under the bus.

But you can only trust half of what either of them says."

Evan Keller took a large gulp of water and nodded. "Still, we have a general idea of what happened. That’s not what’s most important, though. The priority right now is to figure out who the mastermind is."

The entire operation was coordinated online. If, as Mr. Donovan claimed, they exclusively used burner SIMs from start to finish, it would be much harder to follow the trail to the source.

’Even Zoe Sawyer wouldn’t be much help here. Without knowing anything about the other party, she can’t even use her doors to get a location.’

"But it’s not like we’re without a lead," Evan Keller said after a pause. He pointed to Mrs. Donovan’s statement. "The man who saved her, and the streamers in his broadcast—that’s our breakthrough.

That said, we can’t drop the ball on the bank accounts. Keep people digging in that direction. We might still find a thread to pull on."

The Donovan siblings mentioned there are countless accounts like theirs. If we can just track down a few more, someone is bound to know something.

Sean Hughes nodded. Just as he was about to speak, there was a knock on the office door.

They both looked over and saw a member of their team standing breathless in the doorway, his voice filled with excitement. "Captain Keller! We’ve got a new lead! We found a new clue at one of the places Old Man Donovan used to frequent!"

Evan Keller and Sean Hughes shot to their feet and headed for the door. "Take us there!"

’The priority now is to solve the old man’s case and let him rest in peace.’

’As for the Donovan siblings, the rest of the investigation will take time. This break will give them a chance to stew.’

’Best-case scenario, they’ll fall into disarray and confess everything without much of a fight.’

The pair followed the officer to another office in the station.

When they entered, they saw five other people in the room besides their own officers: three benevolent-looking old men and two homeless men.

Although the homeless men’s clothes were shabby, they were clean and neat. Their relatively long hair was tied back with a small elastic band.

"Hello, everyone," Evan Keller said gently, sitting down across from them after shaking all five of their hands. "I trust you know why we’ve asked you to come in today."

The old man in the center, who was wearing a tai chi uniform, nodded slowly. "It’s about Old Man Donovan. We never imagined... we only hadn’t seen him for a few days, and then suddenly, he’s just gone."

At this, the old man in the tai chi uniform sighed resignedly, seemingly unable to believe things had come to this.

"Have you caught the murderer?" The old man with a cane beside him asked, his voice sharp with urgency. "Who was the monster that went after Old Man Donovan?

Old Man Donovan was a good-tempered man. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. Who would attack an old man like that?"

Evan Keller nodded. "We’ve caught the murderers. They were also planning to go after the resident of apartment 703.

There’s another reason we’ve brought you all in. We found a significant amount of blood in Old Man Donovan’s apartment, but it doesn’t belong to him.

We wanted to ask if you know of anyone else he was close with, anyone he might have brought home. Or have any of you ever seen him take someone back to his place?"

At this question, the three old men turned in unison to look at the two homeless men.

Evan Keller followed their gaze.

One of the homeless men pursed his lips, wringing his hands nervously. "If Uncle Donovan brought anyone home," he said, "it would have been people like us."

Evan Keller raised a surprised eyebrow, turning slightly to face the man.

"Could you please elaborate on that for me?"
