My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 512: Who Did You Meet?
Chapter 512: Chapter 512: Who Did You Meet?
Upon hearing Evan Keller’s question, Mrs. Rowan quickly pulled out her phone. She checked every bank card under her and her son’s names before stating with absolute certainty, "We haven’t received any money!"
A few years ago, Wren, who was working away from home, had suddenly returned. She said she’d seen some criminals secretly using other people’s IDs to open bank accounts and take out loans.
Their family’s circumstances had always made them a high-risk target.
To prevent them from being defrauded, Wren Rowan had taken time off work to come home and personally teach Mrs. Rowan how to use her phone to check for any unauthorized bank accounts or phone lines opened in their names.
Only after confirming that Mrs. Rowan had truly memorized the process and would check it daily did Wren Rowan feel relieved enough to go back to work.
Mrs. Rowan had performed this check every day since then, which was why she could answer Evan Keller’s question with such certainty.
"You’re sure there’s nothing, then? That makes the next steps much easier." Evan Keller tapped his notebook with his pen and nodded.
’The perpetrators likely saw the Rowan family’s unique situation and figured a bogus contract would be enough to scare them into obediently handing over the house.’
’But there was another possibility—that Cameron and his crew really did transfer the money, just to someone else’s account.’
’But the specifics would require further investigation. For now, he needed to get a clear picture of what happened with Robert first.’
"And the other matter? Do you remember anything about that?" Evan Keller asked.
Mrs. Rowan pondered Evan Keller’s question, falling into a thoughtful silence. Her tone grew uncertain. "Because Jack... well, he’s simple. Most of the time, I’m the one who takes him out to play in the residential complex, or we’re at home. He rarely goes out by himself."
As she spoke, Mrs. Rowan suddenly slapped her thigh, her voice rising. "I remember now! There was one time, the youngest son of the Hughes family upstairs said a buddy of his had come back after making money abroad and wanted to treat them all to dinner. He asked if Jack wanted to go."
"He said it was just to fill a seat, get a free meal, and come right back. I didn’t agree at first, but Jack wanted to go, and the Hughes’s youngest son repeatedly promised he would watch him closely."
"I figured Jack might want to make friends his own age, so I didn’t stop him. Other than that one time, Jack has always been with me!"
’She’d had a selfish hope back then—that if Jack spent more time with his peers, he might become a little sharper.’
But after they came back from dinner that day, the Hughes’s youngest son left, saying he was going to find work with his buddy. And just like that, they lost contact with Jack.
More than a week passed, and she slowly forgot about the incident. If Evan Keller hadn’t suddenly brought it up, it wouldn’t have even crossed her mind.
Evan Keller and his team, having handled their share of cases, quickly picked up on a few unusual points of connection in her story.
"What’s the Hughes family’s apartment number? We’ll head over and ask some questions in a bit," Evan Keller said.
Mrs. Rowan looked hesitant. "Is it really connected to the Hughes boy? I remember he took good care of Jack back then."
Her son had come home smiling that day with a full belly, and she hadn’t heard him mention being bullied at all.
Mrs. Rowan had even asked him about it directly. After confirming nothing was out of the ordinary, she hadn’t given it a second thought.
So when Evan Keller specifically singled him out, Mrs. Rowan was still a bit incredulous. ’Could it really have something to do with the Hughes boy?’
"We’ve handled similar cases before, so we have a likely suspect profile."
"Besides, it’s just speculation at this point. Whether it’s him or not will ultimately depend on the evidence." Evan Keller shook his head, not answering Mrs. Rowan’s question directly.
As they were discussing this, Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale followed Wren Rowan and laid eyes on the brother she had spoken of.
Because of her son’s intellectual disability, Mrs. Rowan had always carried a sense of guilt toward him.
’She couldn’t give him a normal mind,’ but Mrs. Rowan had never skimped on his food. Thanks to that and his good nutrient absorption, Roger’s physical development had always been excellent.
Therefore, the man now before Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale was tall and sturdy, visually over 1.8 meters, huddled behind the room’s curtains with his head in his hands.
Upon hearing Wren Rowan’s voice, Roger poked his head out from behind the curtain.
When he saw it was his sister, he burst out crying like a child with a loud "WAAAH!" and rushed over to hug Wren Rowan’s legs, sobbing.
He cried and sobbed, stammering that he didn’t know anything, that someone had just shown up saying he’d borrowed money and that they were going to repossess the house.
Although his speech was fragmented, the three people present understood. Before Wren Rowan could think of how to comfort her simple-minded brother, Roger saw Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale standing in the doorway.
The sight of their police uniforms made him think they were there to arrest him, and he scurried back behind the curtain in fear.
"’His condition looks a bit more severe than Beau’s.’ Zoe Sawyer couldn’t help but gasp after witnessing Roger’s behavior."
’Beau can at least speak fluently, and his logic is clear enough. But Roger... his condition seems much more severe than Beau’s.’
’Given his condition, any document he signed or put his thumbprint on would definitely be invalid.’
Zoe Sawyer’s confidence in their case surged once more.
Wren Rowan quickly tried to explain that they were here to help, definitely not to arrest him.
After more than ten minutes of soothing him, Roger finally came out from behind the curtain again.
Heath Hale looked at Wren Rowan and said, "You know him better than we do. I’ll give you a few questions to ask him."
"Ask him if he’s ever seen that Cameron fellow before, and if anything unusual has happened to him lately. Anything out of the ordinary, different from his usual routine."
Roger currently had the intelligence of a three-year-old, and his speech was jumbled and incoherent.
Wren Rowan, having grown up with him, would certainly have a better chance of understanding what Roger was trying to say.
So naturally, Heath Hale handed the task of questioning him over to Wren Rowan.
"I understand." Wren Rowan nodded, then sat cross-legged in front of her brother and asked him the two questions in language he could comprehend.
Roger gripped Wren Rowan’s hand and tilted his head, seemingly trying to recall something. His tone was uncertain. "Seen him? But he wasn’t wearing black clothes, and he had something on his face."
As he spoke, he made his hands into two circles and placed them over his eyes.
Glasses!
Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale exchanged a look. A lead!
Heath Hale said quickly, "Ask him where he saw the person, and whether he was alone or with someone else!"
’Someone must have tricked Roger into providing his signature and thumbprint, and it must have happened behind Mrs. Rowan’s back.’
’If they could just clarify that one point, many of the other questions would be easily answered!’
