Chapter 513: Chapter 513: A New Discovery

Wren Rowan asked the question in a way Roger could understand.

This time, however, it took Roger a little longer. After several minutes, he hesitantly shared what he remembered.

It was three months ago. He thought he had gone out to eat with someone, and that Cameron, the debt collector, had also been at the table.

Too much time had passed, however. Roger could usually only remember things from the last month, so going back any further was difficult.

If Wren Rowan hadn’t kept guiding him, he might not have remembered this detail at all.

After he finished explaining what he could recall, Roger nervously tugged on Wren Rowan’s hand. "Wren, I’ve told them everything I know. Am I going to be arrested?"

"Don’t worry, you’ll be fine," Wren Rowan said, patting Roger’s arm to reassure him.

Although she hadn’t gotten to the bottom of it yet, she had a pretty good idea of what was going on.

Someone coveted their house, figuring that with an intellectually disabled man and an elderly woman, her family wouldn’t be savvy about these matters.

And since she—the one who could make decisions and see through their ill intentions—wasn’t home, they seized the opportunity to conspire with others.

But the masterminds probably hadn’t expected her to react so quickly, bring the police back, and thwart their conspiracy just in time.

"We have the general picture. Let’s go out and check on Mrs. Rowan," Heath Hale said. After running through the questions in his mind and realizing he had no more, he waved at Wren and Roger, gesturing for them to follow.

By the time the four of them reached the living room, Evan Keller and Sean Hughes had just finished their questioning as well.

They compared the statements they had just taken. Evan Keller rubbed his chin and said, "Now we need to figure out where they ate three months ago, find that restaurant, and ask for the surveillance footage."

They could go around asking, but that would be too troublesome and a waste of time. It might also alert any suspects still at large, allowing them to escape.

At this thought, Evan Keller and the others all focused their gazes on Zoe Sawyer.

Zoe Sawyer nodded at them to show she understood, but this wasn’t the right place. "No problem," she said. "Let’s head back to the station first. We’ll handle the rest there."

Sean Hughes turned to Wren Rowan and Mrs. Rowan. "The two of you, please gather the identification for all three of you, and the property deed. They’ll be useful later."

Mrs. Rowan nodded repeatedly, telling Wren Rowan to stay in the living room and watch Roger while she rushed back to her room to pack.

In less than ten minutes, the group emerged from the Rowan residence, got everyone situated, and boarded the police cars, heading for the local precinct station.

Not long after the cars drove off, a head poked out from a balcony on the fifth floor of the building.

After seeing the police cars leave the complex, she quickly dialed her son’s number.

The call connected after a few rings, and a hoarse male voice came from the other end. "Mom, why are you calling at this hour? I’m still sleeping!"

"You little brat! Weren’t you the one who told me to watch for any movement at the idiot’s place and call you right away? You think I actually want to call you?

Besides, what time is it? How can you still be sleeping?" The woman on the phone said unhappily, putting her hands on her hips as her tone turned reproachful.

’We finally hit the jackpot, and he’s being all sneaky about it.’

’Her son just ditched her to go on a trip and enjoy himself, leaving an old lady like her to keep an eye on that family of idiots.’

The woman was filled with resentment, and catching her son sleeping in only fueled her incessant nagging.

The man on the other end of the line was instantly wide awake after hearing that. He checked his calendar, did a quick calculation, and realized it was indeed about that time!

At that thought, the man’s tone filled with unstoppable excitement. "Did someone show up to collect the debt?

That’s great! Mom! I’ll be home soon. Then I’ll sell the house and take you away to enjoy the good life!"

The woman on the other end of the line couldn’t help but crack a smile. Then she said, "The collectors did come, but the adopted daughter from the idiot’s family is back. She brought several police officers, and now they’ve all gone to the station."

The man, who had been excited a moment ago, sobered instantly upon hearing this. "You’re saying the police came? And they took the three of them away?"

"That’s right. The collectors came a couple of days ago, but the idiot’s mom wouldn’t open the door, so things stalled.

Today, their adopted daughter, the one who’s usually too scared to talk to anyone, came straight back with the police." The woman recounted everything that had happened over the past few days to her son.

When she finished speaking, her son on the other end of the line was silent for a long time. The woman called his name a few times, worried.

"Mom, something’s come up on my end. I need to go lie low for a while.

Don’t worry about me, and don’t contact me. I have money; I’ll be fine. And whatever you do, do not tell anyone that we’ve been in touch recently." The man leaped out of bed and began packing his things while giving his mother urgent instructions.

After he finished, the man hung up and started looking for an escape route.

On the other end of the line, the woman stared at the disconnected call, then glanced toward the entrance of the complex. Her heart sank.

She wasn’t a fool. From her son’s reaction, she could guess that he was directly involved in what had happened to that family of idiots.

’In their plan,’ she figured, ’the family of idiots was supposed to hand over the house without a fight. Then, maybe a week or so later, they’d realize something was wrong and finally rush to call the police.’

’By then, it would have been more than enough time for the culprits to unload the asset and get away.’

’Even if the family reported it then, the police wouldn’t be able to find them right away. The delay would give them enough time to find a safe hideout.’

The woman sighed and, following the method her son had taught her, expertly deleted all her call records.

’If the police really do come asking questions,’ she thought, ’at least I can stall them for a while.’

’She felt bad for the family of idiots, but her son’s safety was more important.’

Meanwhile, Zoe Sawyer and the others quickly arrived at the police station. Since they had contacted the local chief in advance, someone was already there to take the men in black suits into custody and lead them to the interrogation rooms.

"Thanks for all your hard work. We’ve set aside a reception room for you. If you need anything later, just text me or come knock on my door," the station chief said as he came out of his office. He shook Zoe Sawyer’s hand, then turned his attention to Evan Keller and the others.

Evan Keller understood the chief’s subtext and quickly replied, "Understood. Thank you for your trouble, sir. We’ll take it from here."

Just then, Evan Keller’s phone rang. As soon as he answered, a team member’s voice came through the line.

"Captain Keller, we’ve got a lead!"
