Chapter 531: Chapter 531: I’m Not a Doctor

"You guys, take the suspect back first," Evan Keller said. After scanning the surroundings to make sure they hadn’t missed anything, he pointed to a few officers, instructing them to escort the woman out. There were still a few arrangements to be made that weren’t suitable for her ears.

"Understood, Captain Keller. We’ll take her back to the station." One of the designated officers nodded in acknowledgment.

He coordinated with a colleague, grabbing Cameron’s mother-in-law by the shoulders and pushing her out. The remaining two officers followed closely behind, remaining on high alert.

Cameron’s mother-in-law struggled in displeasure, but she couldn’t break free from the firm grip the two officers had on her shoulders. Left with no choice, she followed their momentum downstairs.

"Damn it," she cursed inwardly. "She’s not dead anyway, just a little badly injured. Why arrest me? We’re family! Any medical compensation will just go from one pocket to another. Why go to all this trouble?"

"Let me go! She isn’t dead. This is our family business, and we can solve it ourselves! Her injuries might be a bit serious, but it’s not like she can’t be saved!

"Let me go right now! Otherwise, I’ll file a complaint against you! I’ll make sure you pay for this!"

Cameron’s mother-in-law couldn’t help but yell as she was led away, trying to get the officers to release her. However, the escorts remained expressionless, not saying a single word in response. This left the old woman, who had a whole bellyful of arguments prepared, momentarily speechless.

As they headed toward the stairs, she noticed her neighbors poking their heads out of their doorways one by one. Their faces were full of curious scrutiny, and some even looked at her with blatant contempt.

Having been fiercely proud her entire life, normally if she encountered such a situation, she would have stormed over and chewed their entire family out. But she couldn’t do that now. She could only lower her head in humiliation, pretending nothing had happened.

Only after the group’s silhouettes completely disappeared did the neighbors turn back into their homes, grabbing their phones to share the latest gossip with their friends.

It was huge news. To think the person being escorted away by the police was actually Cameron’s mother-in-law! And judging from what she had just said, she had actually gotten physical and injured Cameron. That meant the person hurriedly carried away by the paramedics must have been Cameron. So, their initial guess about an escaped convict had been completely wrong.

The neighbors peeked their heads back out of their doors, making eye contact with each other. They nodded with an extraordinary sense of tacit understanding. They agreed they would come back out and continue their gossip once the rest of the police officers left.

"Leave two people to guard the area. Don’t let anyone in to compromise the scene.

"Zoe Sawyer, you and Sean Hughes use the door to head back to the office. Find out this victim’s information as quickly as possible and contact her parents," Evan continued to assign tasks.

According to the neighbors outside, Cameron’s husband was a total mama’s boy who listened to his mother on everything. He constantly used the phrase "my mom said," treated Cameron poorly, and beat or scolded her at the drop of a hat. Knowing that his mother had attacked his wife, it was genuinely hard to predict what his reaction would be. For the victim’s safety, it was best to call her parents over too.

"All right. I’ll also look into the suspect’s movements during this period," Sean said, putting her phone away.

After everyone received their assignments, they dispersed. Evan had checked beforehand; although the living room had a 360-degree security camera, the power and internet had been cut, so it wouldn’t capture anything. This was also the main reason why he allowed Zoe to use the door to return to the office from here.

Aside from Zoe and Sean, who returned to the office directly through the door, the rest dutifully went downstairs and took a cab back. After all, the neighbors already knew a large police presence had arrived. Although they had been herded back into their homes, if the team all left through the door, it would definitely arouse suspicion. The neighbors might wonder when the police had left, especially since they had been keeping a close eye outside the whole time without noticing a single soul walk out. Did the police have some kind of secret method? To minimize the risk of exposure, Evan chose the more tedious route, taking a cab back with the others.

By the time Evan and the remaining team members walked through the office doors, some basic information about Cameron had already been thoroughly investigated.

Sean had just put her phone down. Looking at Evan, she said, "Cameron is an only child. I’ve already contacted her parents. They live in the neighboring city and are rushing over now."

When the call first connected and they heard it was the police, the couple’s immediate reaction was to assume something had happened to one of their students. At first, they had been able to answer questions calmly. However, after Sean briefly explained the purpose of the call, their voices had instantly pitched up in panic. They didn’t say anything else; after getting the police station’s address, they simply said they were on their way and hung up.

"What about Cameron’s husband? Did you get a hold of him, and what did he say?" Evan asked, nodding. He walked over to pour himself a cup of water, taking a sip.

Bringing this up only angered Sean, her voice taking on a cold edge. "I got a hold of him. He was playing video games at an internet cafe. Once he heard we had arrested his mother, he didn’t care about his game anymore and said he’d come right over."

When she had first called him, she had explicitly told him that Cameron was severely injured and wasn’t out of the woods yet. Yet, Cameron’s husband, Danny, had sounded completely indifferent.

"Since she isn’t dead yet, there’s no need to call me," he had scoffed. "I’m in the middle of a game here. You can’t expect me to drop it and come over, right?

"I’m not a doctor. Is my being there magically going to heal her wounds?"

As he spoke, Danny had a lit cigarette dangling from his lips, his tone filled with apathy. He hung up immediately after finishing his sentence to focus on his game. His words and attitude had nearly made Sean’s blood pressure spike. But she remembered her duty, took a deep breath, and dialed his number again.

After ringing a few times, the call was picked up once more.

"I’ve really had it! I’m gaming, stop calling me!

"Since she’s not dead and I’m not a doctor, I’ll just go see her once she’s out of danger. Isn’t that enough?" Danny’s tone was exceptionally irritable.

Just as he finished speaking and prepared to hang up, Sean interjected, "It’s not your wife, it’s your mother. Your mother was caught for attempted murder, which we stopped just in time. She has now been taken into custody."

Danny’s cursing instantly stopped. A second later, his voice grew even more enraged. "What did you say? Where is your police station? I’m coming over right now!

"I’m warning you, if anything happens to my mom, just wait to be sued!

"Give me the location right now!"

Sean took a deep breath and gave him the station’s address.

"I’m coming over now!"
