My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 532: What Are You Feeling Guilty About?
Chapter 532: Chapter 532: What Are You Feeling Guilty About?
With that, the call was abruptly disconnected once again.
Listening to the BEEP BEEP BEEP echoing from the other end of the line, Sean Hughes couldn’t help but curse, "What is wrong with these people!"
"Alright, don’t let it get to you. The suspect is in the interrogation room, right? I’ll go question her. I want to see exactly what this lady is thinking!" Seeing Sean’s indignant expression, Evan Keller patted her shoulder to comfort her.
"Let’s wait a bit and see what’s happening on the victim’s end. Leave her hanging for now," Heath Hale interjected. "I just walked past the interrogation room. The murderer is highly agitated right now and on high alert. It would take a lot of effort to question her at this moment."
If they interrogated her now, she probably wouldn’t feel any remorse for her actions. She would only regret not acting sooner and killing the victim right from the start. Once her adrenaline wore off and reality set in, it would be much easier to get answers out of her.
Hearing Heath’s assessment, Evan nodded. "I see. That makes sense. We might as well wait in the office for the victim’s husband to arrive."
From the things the murderer had said upon her arrest, combined with Danny’s recent reaction on the phone, it was obvious that this family’s dynamic was extremely strained. Interrogating all three parties separately later on would surely yield a lot of useful information.
Less than ten minutes later, a colleague from the reception desk called the office, reporting that a man had suddenly barged in, claiming his mother had been arrested and demanding they release her immediately.
Evan knew right away that it was Danny. He spoke into the receiver, "Understood. It’s the family member of a suspect we just brought in. Take him to the reception room; we’ll be right there."
Hearing Evan’s reply, the colleague breathed a sigh of relief, their tone lightening considerably. "Understood, Captain Keller. I’ll have someone escort him over right away." As long as it wasn’t just some random person coming to cause trouble, it was fine.
A scowling, irate Danny was led into the reception room. Seeing that it was completely empty, his voice rose again involuntarily. "Where are they? Where’s my mother!
"And where’s that bitch who called me? Why don’t I see her anywhere?"
The police officer who brought him in tilted his head slightly to dodge the deafening roar. "Please calm down. Captain Keller and the others will be here shortly. Just wait here for now.
"As for the person you’re looking for, you can ask Captain Keller about her when he arrives," the officer replied. After guiding Danny to a seat, the officer hurriedly left the room.
Danny sat in his chair, his hands balled into fists as he glared daggers at the door through gritted teeth. He was seething with rage, but he still knew where he was. No matter how furious he felt, he had to hold it in.
He thought to himself, "No, this is the police station. It’d be bad if I cause a scene and give these people something to use against me!" He needed to control his temper, find out exactly what had happened, and see if he could get his mother out of here.
Oh, right! That just might work!
Danny’s eyes lit up. He pulled out his phone and began scrolling through his photo gallery.
Meanwhile, back in the office, Evan read through the background report Sean had requested from start to finish, growing increasingly confident in one of his theories.
"Freeloading while acting like he owns the place... Danny sure knows how to play the game," Evan remarked in disbelief as he set the documents down. He had seen similar cases before, but it was incredibly rare to find a man who leeched off his wife while remaining so abnormally self-righteous about it.
"I understand the gist of it now. Sean, check how long it will take for the victim’s parents to get here." Evan neatly stacked the files and placed them on the desk. After reading the report, he had a solid grasp of the case and a clear direction for the investigation.
"Based on the last phone call and the distance between the two cities, they should arrive in about an hour," Sean said after doing some quick mental math.
Evan nodded. "Alright. In that case, let’s go meet Mr. Dunn. We might just get some unexpected leads.
"Sean, come with me."
Zoe Sawyer was also very curious about the case, so she grabbed Heath and trailed after them.
Over in the reception room, Danny found what he was looking for on his phone and nodded in satisfaction. Setting the device down, he waited for the police to come speak with him. However, after waiting for quite a while, there was still no sign of anyone.
Danny’s patience was wearing remarkably thin. Just a second before he was about to blow his top, the door swung open.
He narrowed his eyes slightly at the four people walking in. When he spoke, his tone was dripping with sarcasm. "You officers must be incredibly busy. You called me down here, but now that I’ve arrived, you just leave me hanging! You’ve wasted almost half an hour of my time for nothing!"
Evan didn’t break his stride. Maintaining a calm expression, he walked over to Danny and took a seat, seemingly unfazed by the man’s abrasive attitude.
"Mr. Dunn, I believe you already know why we asked you to come in today," Evan said, clasping his hands together on the table as he stared intently at Danny.
"Of course! Of course I know why you called me here. My mother is a frail old woman. How could she possibly commit such a violent act? There has to be a misunderstanding.
"Are you cops just trying to meet a quota, so you randomly frame an innocent old lady? If you don’t give me a satisfactory answer, I’m going to post about this online and let the internet judge," Danny retorted, mimicking Evan’s posture. He placed his hands on the table, his expression stern as he glared back at Evan. His words boldly hurled baseless accusations at the officers while threatening them with public exposure.
Sitting to the side, Sean couldn’t help but frown at his response. But before she could speak, Evan spoke up first. "We have definitive proof regarding her actions.
"However, there is something I’d like to ask you first, Mr. Dunn. Why are you so calm about the fact that your wife is currently hospitalized with severe injuries? Did you know this was going to happen?"
Danny, who had been acting somewhat nonchalant, instantly sat up straight upon hearing this question. He glared fiercely at Evan. "What do you mean, did I know this was going to happen? And what’s with that tone? I’m not a criminal! Watch it, or I’ll file a complaint against you!"
"Based on what the suspect said when she was arrested, we have reasonable suspicion to believe that this was a conspired effort between you and your mother.
"Now, please answer my question. Or is it that you have a guilty conscience, which is why you’re in such a rush to change the subject and cover this up?
"What are you hiding?"
