Chapter 533: Chapter 533: Bullshit! How Could You Possibly Not Know!

Evan Keller threw out another statement, keeping his eyes fixed intently on Danny in front of him, as if trying to catch every minute shift in his expression.

"I am so sick of your leading questions! I came here today to see my mom, not to deal with your interrogations!

"If you guys can’t figure out the situation, then I’m not playing along anymore." Danny’s eyes darted around shiftily for a moment before he seemed to remember why he was here, and his tone grew firm once more.

Standing in the corner, Zoe Sawyer watched Danny’s unpredictable expressions and muttered, "His psychological fortitude is garbage. He can’t even withstand a few questions from Evan. Looking at him now, he seems even more suspicious."

According to the background check conducted by Officer Lee, this young couple was a textbook case of a wealthy, sheltered heiress and an opportunistic upstart. Perhaps Cameron had been overprotected by her parents, or maybe she had harbored too many beautiful fantasies about love; regardless, the two had fallen head over heels shortly after meeting. Disregarding her parents’ objections, Cameron was convinced that Danny was her soulmate and married him without hesitation.

However, the disparity in their family backgrounds was simply too vast. Even if Cameron believed that love could conquer all, it couldn’t bridge the massive gap in their values, leading to endless conflicts in their daily lives.

"Keep watching. Things shouldn’t be this simple," Heath Hale said, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, his eyes fixed on Danny’s face.

Right now, they were only operating on assumptions. There was no concrete evidence to prove that today’s incident had been orchestrated by the mother and son duo. They could only try to provoke him through questioning, hoping to snag a clue in the process. Unfortunately, their earlier probe had failed. But everyone had already anticipated this, so they weren’t overly disappointed.

Seeing that his probing was ineffective, Evan gave up on that angle. Staring at Danny, he asked another question. "Your wife is in the hospital, hovering between life and death. And in your eyes, her life is actually less important than a round of video games?"

Danny seemed to have an answer prepared. Hearing Evan’s question, he waved his hand dismissively. "Our marriage has completely broken down. There was no love left between us anyway."

Evan raised an eyebrow. Danny’s response on the phone earlier hadn’t sounded like a simple marital breakdown, but Evan didn’t dwell on it. Instead, he asked, "What does Mr. Dunn think about the fact that your mother attacked your wife and nearly beat her to death?"

At the mention of this, a fleeting glimmer of ruthlessness flashed through Danny’s eyes. Though he quickly concealed it, Evan, sitting right across from him, caught it effortlessly.

Danny’s tone was thick with dissatisfaction. "First of all, my mom is a very kind old lady. She’s thin and frail. How could she possibly attack someone, let alone nearly kill them? There must be some misunderstanding. Furthermore, who’s to say my wife didn’t try to attack her first, only to shoot herself in the foot and get beaten back? Or maybe she staged the whole thing?

"You’re the police. Your main job is to uncover the truth of the case, not to sit here and interrogate me."

Hearing Danny stubbornly deny everything, the others in the reception room frowned in disgust.

Just as Evan was about to say something else, the reception room door sounded: KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.

A team member walked in, holding his phone, his face brimming with excitement as he addressed Zoe and the other three. "We just got a call from the hospital. Thanks to the excellent initial first aid and the timely transport, the victim’s surgery was a complete success. She’s out of danger.

"She just hasn’t woken up yet. She’ll come around once the anesthesia wears off."

Zoe and the rest heaved a long sigh of relief. Thank God she was saved. With the victim’s testimony and the footage from their body cameras, convicting the culprit would be a breeze.

Hearing that Cameron was going to wake up, Danny’s tone grew even more smug. "Officer, you see, my wife is awake now. Since she’s fine, shouldn’t you release my mom?

"Even if the two of them really did get into a fight, it’s just a domestic dispute. We can resolve it privately. There’s no need to keep someone locked up in the police station."

Evan turned to Danny. "The fact that the victim survived is her own good luck. It is not an excuse to forgive the perpetrator!

"Do you have any idea how deep those wounds were? If the blade had been just a fraction of an inch to the side, it would have severed a major artery, and she wouldn’t have even lasted until the ambulance arrived!"

At Evan’s words, the slight smirk on Danny’s lips instantly vanished. He lowered his eyes, a fleeting glint of disappointment flashing in his gaze.

The officer who had come in to deliver the good news seemed oblivious to the tense atmosphere in the room. He continued, "According to the report sent over from the hospital, they found gasoline on the victim, Ms. Yorke—specifically on her face, neck, and limbs.

"The highest concentration of gasoline was on Ms. Yorke’s face, especially around her eyes.

"Ms. Yorke is severely nearsighted and normally wears contact lenses. The gasoline dissolved her contacts, leaving her unable to see what was happening in front of her. That is why she couldn’t dodge the incoming cleaver.

"As for her eyes, even though they were flushed out fairly quickly, the damage was simply too catastrophic. It will have a severe impact on Ms. Yorke’s vision going forward. She might even go blind."

If she had been able to dodge at the very beginning, the wounds on her body wouldn’t have been nearly as horrific. Thinking about the hospital’s report, the officer couldn’t help but feel a pang of pity.

After hearing the officer’s relay of the facts, Evan shifted his gaze to Danny. His tone was flat, but every word made Danny’s brow twitch. "A domestic dispute that requires the use of gasoline, precisely splashed onto the victim’s face to destroy her contact lenses and strip her of her mobility, forcing her to take several direct hits from a cleaver...

"Mr. Dunn, care to explain what kind of ’domestic dispute’ involves a meat cleaver? Or destroying a young woman’s eyes?"

Danny’s expression stiffened for a moment. He opened his mouth to speak but, for a moment, couldn’t find the words. If that woman hadn’t survived, he could have spun some lies and packaged this whole ordeal as a simple family conflict to secure the lightest possible sentence for his mother.

But now, she was awake! Given the current state of their relationship, she absolutely wouldn’t help them. If anything, she would add fuel to the fire and say things that would doom them.

He thought, "If only she had died! If she had died, I’d have so much more room to maneuver. I wouldn’t be backed into a corner like this!"

The more he thought about it, the deeper his resentment toward his mother grew.

"I don’t know anything about that. I went out to play video games today, so I have no idea what happened at home.

"I honestly thought it was just a dispute between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law—a family conflict. I never imagined things would get this serious." Danny quickly changed his tune, abandoning his mother’s innocence as an excuse and scrambling for a new one.

"Bullshit! How could you not know!"
