My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 534: Weird Mother-in-Law
Chapter 534: Chapter 534: Weird Mother-in-Law
A furious roar echoed from outside the door. Immediately after, a man stormed into the room.
He planted himself right next to Danny, and while Danny was still staring in utter shock, the man slapped him across the face.
SMACK!
Danny clutched his cheek, his face pale with disbelief as he cried out, "Dad?"
"Like hell! I am not your father! Your family ruined my daughter, and I am going to make you pay for every single bit of it!" Mr. Yorke furiously cut off whatever Danny was about to say. He raised his hand to deliver another slap, but Heath Hale intervened just in time.
The first slap had happened so suddenly that the police hadn’t been able to react. If they let him strike again, the situation would spiral out of control.
Restrained, Mr. Yorke took the cue and lowered his hand. He shot a vicious glare at Danny before turning to Heath, his tone frantic. "Officer, how is my daughter?"
Heath glanced at the teammate beside him. The officer understood immediately, stepping forward to explain, "Ms. Yorke’s wounds have all been sutured, and her eyes received emergency treatment. The surgery was very successful. She is currently out of danger and has been transferred to a ward for observation."
Hearing that the surgery was a success, Mr. Yorke let out a long sigh of relief. The heavy stone that had been weighing on his heart finally lifted.
Beside him, Mrs. Yorke—who hadn’t said a word but whose eyes were completely red—suddenly swayed. Her legs gave out, and if Zoe Sawyer hadn’t caught her with quick reflexes, she would have collapsed onto the floor.
"Oh, my poor child... All she did was ask for a divorce, and look at the torment she’s been put through." Leaning on Zoe’s arm, Mrs. Yorke stood up, then buried her face in her husband’s shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably. "I told her ages ago that this man was no good! She just wouldn’t listen to me!"
Sitting nearby, Danny heard Mrs. Yorke’s disparaging words. His face instantly turned a ghastly shade, and his hands clenched tightly into fists.
But as his gaze met Evan Keller and Sean Hughes sitting across from him, he could only take a deep breath and forcibly suppress his rising hostility.
Heath took the opportunity to guide the Yorkes over to the adjacent sofa. Once they were seated, he took a chair nearby and asked, "Could you two explain what you meant by what you said when you came in?"
The information the police could uncover was ultimately limited. For the more private matters, they still needed to hear from those closest to the people involved.
"Of course." Mr. Yorke squeezed his wife’s hand, shooting another hateful glare at Danny, who was sitting a short distance away. Just as he was about to speak, an urgent cry interrupted him again.
"Dad! Can we talk about this when we get home? Can we just go to the hospital and see my wife right now?" Danny turned around, looking pleadingly at the Yorkes.
Mr. Yorke snapped again, "I told you not to call me Dad!"
Ignoring Danny’s pathetic pleas, Mr. Yorke held his wife’s hand tightly and spoke to Heath. "In the beginning, when they wanted to get married, we didn’t agree to it.
"But my daughter was stubborn. She believed love could conquer all. She’s our only child, so we simply couldn’t dissuade her. In the end, we agreed to the marriage.
"At first, everything was fine. They were a young married couple, and it’s normal to be a bit overly affectionate during the honeymoon phase. But it wasn’t long before things changed."
One day, Mr. and Mrs. Yorke returned home to find that their married daughter had suddenly come back for a visit.
Initially, her parents were thrilled. They planned to cook her favorite dishes, have a nice chat as a family of three, and enjoy some quality time together.
But right then, Mrs. Yorke reached out to grab her daughter’s arm. Feeling Cameron flinch instinctively, she immediately knew something was wrong.
Mrs. Yorke froze, looking at Cameron with a solemn expression. "Roll up your shirt sleeves right now. Let me see exactly what is going on!"
Cameron tried to dodge the subject. "Mom, let’s go eat first. I’m so hungry, and I really want to eat your cooking!"
In the past, this kind of deflection would have worked wonders. But Mrs. Yorke was already highly suspicious of her daughter’s behavior. She stood firm, refusing to give her a chance to change the topic.
Mr. Yorke, who had been busy setting the table, noticed the commotion and came over to see what was happening.
Faced with her parents’ intense scrutiny, Cameron realized she couldn’t hide it anymore. Reluctantly, she rolled up her sleeves as demanded, revealing a patchwork of deep bruises.
Both of her arms were covered in the ugly marks.
Mr. and Mrs. Yorke weren’t fools. They could easily tell exactly where those bruises came from.
"Did Danny put his hands on you?" Mrs. Yorke asked, her hands trembling. She didn’t even dare to touch her daughter.
She never imagined that her wonderful daughter would end up being subjected to domestic violence after getting married.
If she had known this would happen, she would have taken a much firmer stance from the start!
Mr. Yorke had been an educator for many years. Despite his usually refined and gentle demeanor, even he couldn’t hold back a curse. He paced angrily around the living room before finally grabbing a wooden stick from the corner, intending to storm right out the door.
Mrs. Yorke ultimately shouted for him to stop. She told him to calm down and figure out the full story first.
The couple sat down on either side of Cameron, never taking their eyes off her.
Cameron just sat there on the sofa. She remained silent for quite a while before she finally opened up, explaining the situation to her parents.
In the beginning, the newlyweds had indeed been happy. They lived in domestic bliss in their rented apartment.
But soon after, Danny’s mother moved in.
Danny came from a single-parent household. Mrs. Dunn had endured countless hardships to raise him all by herself, so she was naturally a bit overbearing.
Cameron had known this from the beginning and had mentally prepared herself for it.
But in the end, Cameron realized that her mental preparation had fallen drastically short.
As soon as Mrs. Dunn arrived, she demanded that the couple sleep in separate beds. She made Cameron move out to the living room to sleep on a folding cot, while she herself moved into the master bedroom.
Cameron had braced herself for all kinds of petty fault-finding, but she never imagined she’d fail at the very first hurdle.
They were a married couple. What kind of newlyweds started sleeping in separate rooms right after getting married? It would severely damage their relationship.
Cameron tried to discuss it with her husband, asking him to talk to Mrs. Dunn. If she felt the apartment was too small, they could always move into a two-bedroom place.
But somehow, Mrs. Dunn caught wind of this idea. That very night at the dinner table, she started making passive-aggressive comments. She complained that young people spent money recklessly, saying that as long as an apartment was livable, it was fine—there was absolutely no need to waste extra cash renting somewhere else.
She claimed Cameron had no consideration for how hard her husband worked to earn a living, and that she didn’t know the first thing about budgeting.
From time to time, she would also nitpick everything Cameron bought, accusing her of being wasteful and spending money like water. She constantly declared that Cameron wasn’t fit to be a proper wife.
In the early days, Danny would still make an effort to comfort Cameron. He would assure her that his mother didn’t mean any harm and told her not to take it to heart.
He begged her to just endure it a little longer. He promised that once Mrs. Dunn got used to the fact that he was married and had his own little family, she would rein in her behavior.
