Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 492 - 388 : What Uzuki Wanted!!

  • Next Chapter

The corridor hadn’t caught its breath from Ch. 387’s interrupted confession before the next crisis was already climbing past it.

Forty percent kept climbing.

Forty-two.

Forty-five.

[Divergent Expression — Signature Scan, urgent]

Uzuki: 45%, climbing, no observed ceiling

Second Signature: 34%, unchanged

Third Fragment: 5%, holding

Base Kagetsu: 61%, falling

Unidentified glow (new): 6%, present, rising in parallel with Uzuki

"It’s not stabilizing," Danzo said. "It’s tracking the glow. Watch the numbers — every point Uzuki gains, the new signature gains half a point behind it."

Hiruzen’s hand hadn’t left the air above Kagetsu’s chest since Ch. 385, tracking temperature the old-fashioned way, instinct running alongside the numbers rather than trusting them alone. "Whatever’s happening," he said, "it isn’t fighting him for room. It’s fighting past him."

---

Kagetsu’s knees buckled.

Orochimaru caught him fully this time — no half-catch, no reflex arriving a second too late. Both arms, full weight, the specific grip of a man who had stopped pretending this was something he could let the boy walk off on his own.

Danzo moved to Kagetsu’s other side without being asked, a hand braced flat against his back — the first time all crisis he’d offered physical support rather than only analysis.

"Talk to me," Orochimaru said. "Not the new voice. You. Are you still in here."

"I’m here," Kagetsu got out, teeth gritted, his own voice, cracked at the edges. "It’s not attacking me. It’s not fighting for space. It’s just — reaching. Past me. Toward something that isn’t me."

---

Kushina’s chains snapped up around Kagetsu’s shoulders, not to restrain — to brace. "Reaching for what," she said.

Her voice had lost the softness it carried in Ch. 386, back to the register she used when a situation demanded action rather than patience.

Nobody answered, because nobody had ever heard Uzuki answer anything.

Nineteen Chapters — no, less, since Ch. 383 — and Uzuki had been a presence, a percentage, a flicker of recognition. Never a voice.

That changed at forty-eight percent.

The whole corridor felt it arrive before it heard a single word — a pressure change, the way a room shifts right before someone long silent finally clears their throat.

---

"The light," Uzuki said.

The whole corridor went still in a different way than it had for the second signature. That silence had been shock. This one was closer to disbelief — the specific quiet of hearing something everyone had assumed couldn’t speak, speak.

"Not him," Uzuki said. "Not the third fragment. Not the other one, the old one, the patient one. The light behind them. I’ve been reaching for it since before I had a body to reach with."

---

"You’ve had a voice this whole time," Hiruzen said, careful, the way he’d have addressed anything cornered and unpredictable. "Why now."

He kept his hand raised, palm open, the same instinctive check-and-calm gesture he’d used on the hollow itself two Chapters ago — old habits doing what numbers alone couldn’t.

"Because there was finally something worth using it for," Uzuki said. "I didn’t come here to take his place. I came here because something in me has been pointed at that light since long before I understood what pointing meant."

The newcomer stepped forward, composure gathering itself back together piece by piece. "That’s not the account I gave in Ch. 383," it said. "I said you were sent to complete yourself using whatever was vacated. I was wrong. You were never aimed at a vacancy. You were aimed at a target, and the third fragment’s departure only happened to open a door in the target’s direction."

"Yes," Uzuki said. "You kept assuming I wanted a person. I never wanted a person. I wanted what’s glowing in there. I still do."

"Four corrections now," the newcomer said, quieter, mostly to itself. "I keep arriving at the truth by first being confidently, specifically wrong about it. I don’t know if that’s a flaw in how I was made or simply what learning looks like when you don’t get to practice first."

[Divergent Expression — Cross-Reference]

Query: Uzuki vs. unidentified glow

Correlation: 88%, highest reading logged tonight

Correlation: base Kagetsu vs. unidentified glow: 12%, low

Correlation: second signature vs. unidentified glow: 9%, low

Classification: match candidate — strongest pairing recorded this arc

"Eighty-eight percent," Minato said. "That’s not proximity. That’s the same number the third fragment hit with the hollow before it ever went in."

"It’s not trying to hurt him," Danzo said slowly, watching the read update in real time. "It’s trying to find the one thing in this crisis that was actually built to match it."

Hiruzen looked between the two numbers on Kagetsu’s own readout — twelve percent, nine percent — and something in his expression settled, grim but certain. "Nothing else in this corridor comes close to that number," he said. "Whatever this new thing is, it wasn’t made for any of us. It was made for Uzuki specifically, or Uzuki was made for it. I don’t think it matters which, right now."

---

The figure had gone rigid, crack fully dark. "Then it was never about Kagetsu at all," it said. "Not really. We’ve spent four Chapters treating this like it was happening to him. It’s been happening around him. He’s the room. He’s not the reason."

"He’s still the reason I got this far," Uzuki said, and for the first time there was something almost gentle in it. "I’m not ungrateful. I’m just honest about what I actually came for. Nobody’s asked me that plainly before tonight."

Orochimaru’s grip on Kagetsu didn’t loosen, but something in his voice did — the particular relief of a threat reclassified as something smaller than feared, even if the shape of it was stranger. "That’s the most straightforward answer anyone’s given us all crisis," he said. "I’d like to know what that says about the rest of you."

Nobody took the bait. It wasn’t the moment for it, and everyone in the corridor seemed to know it at once.

---

Kagetsu, upright again with Orochimaru’s arm still braced under him, managed a breath before speaking. "Then ask it," he said, to the room, to himself, to the light he couldn’t see but could feel sitting warm behind his ribs. "Somebody ask it if it wants this."

Nobody moved to ask right away. It was, everyone in the corridor seemed to realize at once, a genuinely difficult thing to phrase — how do you ask something that’s only just begun forming whether it consents to being reached for.

The second signature answered before the light could, if the light could answer at all.

"It’s not old enough to want anything yet," it said. "It’s barely finished forming. Uzuki isn’t reaching for a decision. It’s reaching for an infant."

"I know," Kagetsu said, before anyone else could react to that. Still his own voice, still ragged at the edges, but steadier now that Orochimaru had all of his weight. "I’ve felt it since Ch. 387. I didn’t have a word for it either, until just now."

It was the most he’d said in his own unborrowed voice since the confession had been cut short — small, but the room noticed it.

Danzo’s eyes cut to him sharply. "You knew there was something new before it started glowing."

He said it without accusation this time — closer to cataloguing than interrogating, the same shift Orochimaru had noticed in himself two Chapters earlier.

"I felt something new," Kagetsu said. "I didn’t know it was separate from the second signature until it started answering questions on its own."

---

Kushina’s chains tightened.

"Then it stops," she said, flat, no room for negotiation in it. "Whatever it is, however new, it doesn’t get reached for before it’s even had a chance to exist on its own terms. I don’t care how patient anyone in this corridor has learned to be about waiting for things."

She’d said some version of this before — to Obito, over her own mother’s name; to the third fragment, over the risk it wouldn’t survive its own transfer. It never got easier to say. It never stopped being true either.

"I agree," Uzuki said, and the corridor’s second true shock of the night landed harder than the first. "I’ve been waiting since long before he was born. A little longer costs me nothing I haven’t already spent."

---

The glow pulsed once — a small, private motion, nothing like the mark’s activation, nothing like the hollow’s opening.

Just a flicker. The kind an infant makes without meaning anything by it.

[Divergent Expression — Signature Scan, updated]

Uzuki: 46%, holding, first plateau since the spike began

Unidentified glow: 7%, steady

Uzuki had stopped climbing.

For exactly four seconds, the corridor believed the crisis had found its floor.

Kushina let her chains ease, not fully down, but down enough to mean something. Orochimaru’s grip on Kagetsu loosened by degrees, testing whether the boy could bear his own weight again. Even Danzo, watching the readout, allowed himself the smallest exhale of the night.

Then the glow pulsed a second time — deliberate, this time, unmistakably aimed — and answered Uzuki back.
