Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 493 - 389 : Answering Something Else!!

  • Next Chapter

Four seconds of relief had felt, for a moment, like it might actually hold.

The pulse hit the corridor like a dropped stone hits still water.

Not loud. Not violent.

Just undeniable.

---

[Divergent Expression — Signature Scan, urgent]

Glow: 7%, unchanged in magnitude, pulse pattern detected

Uzuki: 46%, holding

Pulse Frequency: 1.3 Hz, repeating

Cross-Reference: pattern match pending

"It’s rhythmic," Minato said, watching the readout cycle. "That’s not a reflex. Reflexes don’t repeat clean."

Danzo’s jaw tightened. "Cross-reference it against everything. Now."

He said it the way he’d said very little else tonight — no theorizing first, no filtering it through a prior assumption. Just the flattest, fastest order he’d given all crisis.

---

Kagetsu felt it from the inside before Divergent Expression finished the query — a small, steady beat behind his ribs, patient as a second heartbeat that had decided, after less than two Chapters of existing, to introduce itself properly.

He hadn’t expected it to feel gentle. Everything else tonight had arrived like an emergency. This didn’t.

"It’s not talking to me," he said, quiet, still braced against Orochimaru’s arm. "I don’t think it’s talking to Uzuki either. Not exactly."

"Then who," Uzuki said. Its own signature had gone very still, the climbing finally arrested, all its attention narrowed down to that one repeating beat.

For the first time since Ch. 388, it sounded less like something reaching and more like something listening alongside everyone else in the room.

---

[Divergent Expression — Cross-Reference, result]

Query: glow pulse frequency (1.3 Hz) vs. all logged patterns

MATCH FOUND: wall-seal activation pulse, Ch. 384 — 97% frequency correlation

Classification: not coincidental. Not residue. Deliberate mimicry or shared origin.

Hiruzen read it twice before he said anything.

"It’s not answering Uzuki," he said. "It’s answering the mark."

He said it the way a man says something he wishes weren’t true — slow, deliberate, giving the room time to catch up to him rather than racing ahead of it.

---

The room went quiet in the particular way it had gone quiet for the second signature back in Ch. 386 — not fear, not yet. The specific stillness of everyone recalculating a map they’d thought was finished.

"That’s not possible," Danzo said, and for once it didn’t sound like a demand for correction. It sounded like a man hoping to be told he was right. "The mark went dormant again after Ch. 384. It hasn’t pulsed since the crossing point stabilized."

"It’s not the mark pulsing," the second signature said slowly. "It’s the glow copying the pulse. Learning it. The way an infant copies a sound before it understands what the sound means."

It said it carefully, the way it had said everything since Ch. 386 — not defensive, but visibly working to keep its own explanations honest rather than comforting, even when comforting would have been easier for the room to hear.

---

"Copying it from where," Kushina said. "It’s been in there since before tonight. It didn’t have access to Ch. 384."

Her chains had gone taut again without her seeming to notice, old reflex outrunning her own read of how dangerous the moment actually was.

"I don’t know," the second signature admitted. "I’ve been wrong about how contained that space actually is. I assumed it only held what we put in it. I don’t think that’s true anymore."

The figure’s crack pulsed once, sharp. "Then something’s been leaking both directions," it said. "Not just the third fragment leaking out into the constructs. Something leaking in, too. From the mark. Maybe from further than the mark."

---

Orochimaru’s grip on Kagetsu tightened fractionally. "Define further," he said.

"I don’t know how to define it," the figure said. "I only know the shape of a boundary that isn’t holding the way everyone assumed it was, and I’ve spent this entire arc being the thing that boundary was supposed to be built around. I’d like it noted that I’m allowed to find that unsettling."

Nobody argued the point.

Kushina’s hand found the figure’s shoulder — brief, wordless, the same gesture she’d offered Kagetsu twice already tonight. It didn’t fix anything. It wasn’t meant to.

---

The pulse kept going. Steady. Patient. 1.3 Hz, unwavering, the glow’s own tiny signature holding at seven percent through every repetition — not growing, not shrinking. Just insisting.

"It’s not trying to escape," Hiruzen said, watching it. "It’s not trying to grow, either. It’s just repeating the only thing it’s found so far that it recognizes."

"That’s the saddest thing anyone’s said all crisis," Uzuki said, quiet, and something in its tone had shifted — the reaching from earlier gone entirely, replaced by something closer to protectiveness. "It’s alone in there and it found one sound it knows and it’s just saying it over and over so it isn’t."

Its own signature stayed motionless at 46%, no climb, no retreat — the stillness, for the first time, reading less like restraint and more like attention.

---

Kagetsu’s hand moved without him quite deciding to move it — pressed flat against his own sternum, over the opened scar, over the small steady beat underneath it.

The warmth under his palm hadn’t changed since Ch. 385. It had never once burned. It had just been patient, the way everything about this particular corner of himself had apparently learned to be patient, long before he’d had a word for any of it.

"Hey," he said. Out loud. To something that had never been spoken to directly before tonight. "You don’t have to keep saying the same thing to be heard. I’m listening."

The pulse stuttered.

Once.

---

[Divergent Expression — Signature Scan, urgent update]

Glow: 7%, stable

Pulse Frequency: shifting — no longer locked to wall-seal pattern

New Frequency: unclassified, still forming

Confidence: rising for the first time since the glow appeared

"It heard him," Danzo said, and for the first time all crisis there was something almost like wonder in it, buried under the flat delivery. "It changed the pattern because he spoke to it directly."

"It’s trying something new," Minato said. "Not copying the mark anymore. Trying its own."

He’d kept his kunai lowered through the entire exchange — the longest stretch all night without it rising even partway.

---

Kushina’s chains, still loose since her plateau of relief two Chapters back, eased further. "That’s what listening does," she said, mostly to herself, mostly for reasons that predated tonight by a lot more than one crisis. "Give something a reason to stop repeating the only sound it knows, and eventually it tries to make a new one."

She didn’t say who had once needed that given to her. Nobody asked. It wasn’t that kind of question, and tonight had already asked enough of them.

"I want to hear it," Uzuki said. "Whatever it’s about to say. I’ve waited this long. I can wait a little longer for the actual words, if that’s what this becomes."

The newcomer had gone very still, watching the frequency readout climb toward something none of Divergent Expression’s classifications had a name for yet.

"So can I," it said. "For the first time all arc, I’d genuinely rather not guess."

It said it like relief, not resignation — the difference, this late in the crisis, was the only thing keeping the newcomer’s own composure from cracking a fifth time.

---

The new pattern built slowly — not the sharp, urgent spike of Uzuki’s own arrival, not the mark’s clean repeating pulse.

Something halting. Something learning its own shape as it went, the way any first attempt at anything does.

Orochimaru’s arm had stayed under Kagetsu’s the entire time, forgotten by both of them now, more habit than necessity. Even Danzo had stopped narrating the readout aloud, watching it instead with the same stillness everyone else in the corridor had settled into.

Then it found a rhythm.

And the rhythm it found wasn’t random, and it wasn’t the mark’s, and it wasn’t Uzuki’s either.

[Divergent Expression — Cross-Reference, urgent]

New Frequency Match: 61%, second signature’s voiceprint (Ch. 386-387)

New Frequency Match: 34%, Kagetsu’s current voice (Ch. 387)

Classification: not mimicry. Composite. Original.

Hiruzen’s hand went still against Kagetsu’s chest.

"It’s not copying either of them," he said slowly. "It’s combining them. Like it’s trying to figure out which parts of itself belong to who before it decides what to say."

Danzo looked between the readout and Kagetsu’s face, something rare crossing his own — not calculation this time, just the plain difficulty of watching something try to become itself in real time with no privacy left to do it in.

"Then let it," he said. "Whatever it needs to figure out first, let it. We’ve asked enough of this corridor tonight without rushing the one thing in it that’s never asked us for anything back."

The glow pulsed once more — steadier now, more certain — and for the first time since it had appeared, it didn’t feel like an infant reaching blindly for the nearest sound.

It felt like something choosing its own first word, and running out of time to decide what that word should be before the choice got made for it.
