Chapter 639: Natural Flow of Energy
"Looks like you know me."
Kenichi looked at the Great Toad Sage with a hint of scrutiny in his eyes.
Right now, he was more curious about where the Great Toad Sage had obtained this strange energy.
Kenichi had only discovered similar energy after coming into contact with the native gods of this world, and producing it was far from easy.
That made him increasingly curious about the source of the energy within the Great Toad Sage.
If he could find where it came from, perhaps he would no longer need to seek out those gods whenever he wanted more of it.
He could simply obtain the energy directly from the source.
That would make using the time machine much more convenient.
As Kenichi thought about this, his gaze shifted across Mount Myoboku.
There were an enormous number of toads here.
Fortunately, he had no fear of toads, so their presence did not bother him.
Ryuchi Cave would naturally be filled with snakes.
As for Shikkotsu Forest, that place was even stranger.
All the slugs living there were clones separated from the Slug Sage herself, making Shikkotsu Forest a rather unique place.
Still, Kenichi was not particularly interested in Shikkotsu Forest.
The slugs there possessed impressive healing abilities, but compared with healing, the Great Toad Sage’s ability to predict the future interested him far more.
After hearing Kenichi’s words, the Great Toad Sage’s expression became somewhat ugly.
Kenichi watched with interest.
Despite having the face of a toad, the Great Toad Sage somehow displayed human-like emotions clearly enough that Kenichi could understand them.
That alone was rather fascinating.
"Your appearance changed the future of this world."
The Great Toad Sage looked at Kenichi cautiously.
"At the very least, every future I once saw has changed."
"That is why I know you, Lord Kenichi."
"However, Mount Myoboku bears no hostility toward you."
The Great Toad Sage lowered its voice.
"May I ask why you have come here?"
Kenichi raised an eyebrow.
This old toad really was interesting.
But whether it had predicted the future entirely through that strange energy was still uncertain.
If that were truly the explanation, then things would become even more interesting.
Kenichi continued studying the Great Toad Sage.
As for its claim that Mount Myoboku held no hostility toward him, Kenichi did not completely believe it.
If that were true, then what had been with the strange look Jiraiya gave him?
Surely Kenichi had not imagined it.
Could Jiraiya simply have developed some personal issue with him?
That seemed impossible.
Kenichi had not done anything to Jiraiya.
"Then explain something to me."
Kenichi smiled playfully.
"Why is Jiraiya wary of me?"
The Great Toad Sage’s expression immediately stiffened.
So it really was connected to Jiraiya.
"This..."
The old toad hesitated briefly.
"While I was asleep, I saw several fragments of the future."
"In that future, I saw a person wearing white clothing floating in the sky."
"And then..."
"That person brought disaster to the entire world."
The Great Toad Sage answered honestly.
It could clearly sense the enormous power within Kenichi.
Mount Myoboku had absolutely no chance of defeating him.
So honesty was the safest choice.
Kenichi nodded slowly.
That explained everything.
This damned old toad had seen a few vague fragments of the future and told Jiraiya about them.
Then Kenichi had happened to visit Jiraiya while wearing white clothing.
Naturally, Jiraiya had made the connection.
Kenichi felt speechless.
Anyone working in science wore a white laboratory coat.
Doctors wore them too.
Why had Jiraiya not considered the possibility that Tsunade might be the person who destroyed the world?
Then Kenichi thought about it.
Tsunade probably did not possess that capability.
And among the people Jiraiya knew who both wore white clothing and possessed enough strength to potentially threaten the world...
Kenichi probably was the most obvious candidate.
"I’m curious about something."
Kenichi looked at the Great Toad Sage.
"How exactly do you predict the future?"
The surrounding toads immediately showed dissatisfaction.
But when the Great Toad Sage glanced at them, none dared speak.
The old toad instead showed a look of understanding.
"So that is what you came here for."
It slowly turned.
"Please follow me."
The Great Toad Sage led Kenichi deeper into Mount Myoboku, toward the place where it normally slept.
No other toads were allowed inside.
Kenichi soon noticed a strange structure resembling a well.
The Great Toad Sage pointed toward it.
"When I sit above this place and sleep, I occasionally see fragments of the future."
The Great Toad Sage spoke honestly.
"But those fragments resemble dreams."
"So even after waking, I cannot remember everything clearly."
Kenichi approached the well.
He looked inside.
It was dry.
There appeared to be nothing within it.
Then again, saying there was absolutely nothing would not be accurate.
Kenichi could see several broken stone statues and scattered rocks at the bottom.
Other than those, however, the well was empty.
No water.
Nothing else.
Kenichi was still considering the problem when something suddenly flashed below.
A faint light.
Then dizziness struck him.
For an instant, Kenichi felt as though he...
...
The next moment, Kenichi stood blankly beside the well.
The Great Toad Sage stood nearby in absolute silence.
It remained completely obedient, not daring to move.
Because another person had appeared beside them.
Kaguya.
She quietly watched Kenichi.
"Kenichi."
Her pale eyes carried complicated emotions.
There was embarrassment.
Annoyance.
And something else.
But Kaguya quickly calmed herself and simply waited.
She wanted to see exactly what Kenichi would witness after looking into the well.
...
"So just entering this house is enough to see a ghost?"
Kenichi looked at the information in his hand, then raised his head toward the residence before him.
A large warning sign stood outside the property.
Years of exposure had covered it in rust.
Someone had spray-painted phrases such as [Yoroshiku] and [Strongest in Tokyo] across it.
Probably some biker gang trying to prove their courage.
Weeds had completely overtaken the courtyard.
Vines crawled across the outer walls of the house.
Even though it was broad daylight and sunlight shone brightly overhead, there was not a single person nearby.
The entire property carried an eerie atmosphere.
Kenichi recognized this place.
It was a famous haunted house in Tokyo.
Anyone who entered supposedly never returned alive.
According to the records, more than a hundred people had disappeared or died inside over the past ten years.
Police officers from the Metropolitan Police Department had once entered to investigate murder cases.
They either died or vanished.
Eventually, even the Metropolitan Police Department stopped sending officers inside.
If someone died in the courtyard, nobody would even enter to retrieve the corpse.
There was no need.
After enough time passed, the corpse would disappear by itself.
"This setting is a little too similar to Ju-On, isn’t it?"
Kenichi looked at the house and remembered a classic horror movie from his previous life.
Still, he pushed open the damaged gate and walked inside.
The moment his foot crossed the boundary, a chill spread through his entire body.
It felt as though he had accidentally fallen into an icy stream during winter.
Before Kenichi even reached the front door, something suddenly gripped his wrist.
Then he was dragged backward.
Kenichi turned his head.
The scenery changed.
He was already standing inside the house.
The door was behind him.
A damp, moldy smell unique to old houses filled the air.
Kenichi pressed his lips together.
Interesting.
It seemed he was finally going to meet a real ghost.
Just like the protagonists in countless novels, Kenichi was not originally from this world.
He was a transmigrator.
On his way home from work one day, he had found a strange fox doll.
Out of curiosity, he picked it up.
When he looked down, he was still standing in the residential area where he lived.
When he looked back up...
He had arrived in another world.
The transition had been as smooth as eating Dove chocolate.
"The house is pretty big."
Kenichi looked around.
"Just filthy."
The overall layout was practically identical to the house from Ju-On.
At the moment, however, he seemed to be the only person inside.
No.
There were two.
Kenichi looked upward.
A white figure flashed across the second floor.
He immediately hurried upstairs.
The instant he reached the second floor, a door silently opened in front of him.
Almost as though it were inviting him inside.
The previously dark room suddenly lit up.
Warm yellow light filled the interior.
Kenichi pushed the door open and entered.
Creak...
A strange sound came from the ceiling.
Then came another noise.
Gurgle...
It sounded as though something were crawling above him.
Kenichi opened a nearby cupboard.
Inside, he found an entrance leading into the ceiling.
Without hesitation, he climbed inside.
Then he poked his head toward the place where the unsettling noise originated.
The ceiling space was pitch black.
Only vague outlines could be seen.
Suddenly, the crawling became much faster.
A dark humanoid figure appeared directly in front of him.
The darkness made it impossible to see the figure’s face clearly.
Kenichi could only tell that the person had extremely thick, long hair.
He pulled a lighter from his pocket.
Click.
A flame appeared.
The weak light illuminated the darkness.
And revealed the bloody, terrifying face directly in front of him.
"Gurgle..."
The strange woman’s neck twisted at an unnatural angle.
Her eyes stared directly at Kenichi.
Then she lunged.
...
"Miss Kayako, hello."
Inside the brightly lit living room, Kenichi sat politely on a chair and looked at the woman opposite him.
"I am an audit specialist from the association."
"I’m here today to evaluate your work."
"Oh my."
Kayako smiled pleasantly.
"I was wondering why the magpie kept calling as soon as I woke up today."
"So the newly appointed audit specialist has come to visit."
She placed a cup of tea in front of Kenichi.
A single tea leaf stood upright inside the cup.
Kenichi accepted it politely.
Then he took out the notebook he carried and placed it on the table.
After that, he pulled out the small fox doll that had brought him into this damned world.
The instant Kayako saw the fox doll, her eyes contracted.
Her attitude became even more respectful.
"Miss Kayako."
Kenichi opened his notebook.
"According to association regulations, the work of every ghost and monster under the association must be evaluated once a year."
"Have you completed your required business targets for this year?"
Kayako immediately became serious.
She produced a laptop from somewhere and placed it in front of Kenichi.
"Of course, Audit Specialist."
"Not many people broke into my house this year, but I still worked very hard and completed the quota of killing ten people."
Kayako opened her performance records.
Displayed on the screen were selfies of her posing beside corpses that had died in various miserable ways.
Each entry clearly recorded the victim’s identity and age.
Kenichi examined the records and carefully wrote them down.
"Alright, Miss Kayako. Then I..."
Kenichi stopped.
"I..."
What was he doing here?
Confusion appeared on his face.
Hadn’t he transmigrated into the Naruto world?
Why was he suddenly here?
The instant Kenichi realized something was wrong, the entire world shattered with a loud crack.
Everything collapsed around him.
The next moment, Kenichi saw the well again.
And inside it...
Something flowed like moonlight.
"You came from another world?"
A familiar voice sounded beside him.
Kenichi turned his head.
Kaguya was standing there.
His mouth twitched.
How had she gotten here?
Had she caused what just happened?
"So what?"
Kenichi looked at her calmly.
He had been too focused on searching for the energy needed by the time machine and had let his guard down for a moment.
That was how he had been dragged into that strange vision.
Still, after reviewing what had happened inside it, Kenichi remained calm.
His system had not been exposed.
That was enough.
"Interesting."
A faint smile appeared at the corner of Kaguya’s lips.
"I remember that the clan once conquered several worlds somewhat similar to the one you came from."
Kenichi rolled his eyes.
He actually believed her.
The Otsutsuki Clan was powerful enough to travel across the universe, and they even possessed beings considered gods.
Ordinary worlds that had developed only through conventional technology probably had little ability to resist something like that.
Kenichi pinched the bridge of his nose.
Still, arguing with Kaguya was not important.
His attention returned to the substance flowing inside the well.
It resembled liquid moonlight.
Kenichi activated his analytical ability.
His eyes narrowed.
It was exactly the same energy used by the time machine.
The quantity was extremely small.
But there was no mistake.
So why did it exist inside this well?
Where had it come from?
Kenichi stared downward with growing interest.
"Does this thing have a source?"
If there really was a source somewhere, that would be extremely valuable.
If not...
Then the situation would become much more troublesome.
Either way, Kenichi had already made up his mind.
He was going to investigate this place thoroughly.
He wanted to know exactly how this energy had formed.
