Chapter 640: The Blood of the Pseudo-God

Kenichi stared at the strange energy flowing freely before him.

His research in this field had continued for quite some time. The time machine itself gave him a way to study and gradually grasp the concept of time, but the progress of his research had become painfully slow.

So slow that it had almost reached a complete standstill.

At that moment, Kenichi suddenly realized something.

Perhaps what he lacked was not more time.

What he truly needed was to study the essence of time itself.

Only by understanding the concept of time at its most fundamental level could he improve his progress in deciphering it.

It was a strange idea, but Kenichi felt the possibility was quite high.

His most urgent task was therefore clear.

He needed to decipher time, understand time, and eventually master time so that he could control and utilize it to the greatest possible extent.

That would require long-term research.

As for the energy used by the time machine, that was another subject Kenichi was currently investigating.

Originally, he had intended to let Amado study the native gods and extract more information from them.

But after arriving here, Kenichi had another idea.

Perhaps there was no need to rely on those gods at all.

The simplest solution would be to find the natural source of this energy directly.

If he could do that, studying and operating the time machine would become far easier.

With that thought, Kenichi prepared to descend into the well.

Before he could move, Kaguya walked over to his side.

Kenichi glanced at her and instinctively became slightly tense.

He still could not completely understand what Kaguya was thinking.

For now, though, the situation seemed to remain under control.

"This substance is somewhat familiar."

Kaguya studied the energy below.

"It seems to be a form of energy that the Otsutsuki Clan once extracted."

Kenichi’s interest immediately rose.

The Otsutsuki Clan had extracted this kind of energy before?

Interesting.

Although Kaguya was different from Isshiki and had belonged to the Branch Family, she clearly still possessed some knowledge about the clan.

That was reasonable.

Even as a Branch Family member, Kaguya had obviously been exceptional.

Otherwise, she would never have been selected to accompany Isshiki as a sacrifice, nor would she have dared to betray him.

If the difference in strength between Kaguya and Isshiki had been overwhelming, then her ambush would have been nothing more than a joke.

It was like an ordinary genin suddenly running over and shoving Kenichi.

Kenichi would not even move.

He could probably kill that genin with a casual backhand.

But if Guy opened all Eight Gates and struck him with Night Guy, Kenichi would definitely be sent flying.

The strength of the attacker mattered.

Without sufficient strength, an ambush was not an ambush.

It was a farce.

Clearly, Kaguya had already possessed considerable strength even back then.

Otherwise, she could never have brought Isshiki to the brink of death.

Kenichi looked at her curiously.

He wanted more information.

Judging from Kaguya’s reaction, she definitely recognized this energy.

He did not need to know everything.

Even a basic explanation would be enough.

"Kaguya, you know what this is?"

Kenichi looked at her with obvious interest.

"What exactly is it?"

"And can you find its source?"

Kaguya nodded.

She did indeed recognize it.

Within the Otsutsuki Clan, this substance was extremely valuable, but it was also necessary for certain technologies.

Kaguya had once been assigned to maintain some of the clan’s machines, so she had encountered this rare form of energy before.

Her expression gradually became more confident.

Kenichi smiled when he noticed.

He was looking forward to her explanation.

If Kaguya could truly help him solve this problem, his research into time would advance far more quickly.

Until now, that research had remained sluggish.

Kenichi sometimes regretted how much time he had invested in it.

If he had spent the same amount of effort on other projects, he might already have completed one or two of them.

But there was no better alternative.

If he wanted to progress further, he needed to solve the current problem first.

Yet Kaguya did not immediately explain.

She simply stood there with her arms crossed.

Kenichi gradually became impatient.

Still, he could not exactly force her to speak.

Then a strange thought occurred to him.

Was Kaguya trying to trade something for the information?

If she truly had no intention of telling him anything, she could simply have left.

Kenichi had already seen the strange dimensions she controlled.

One of them was a bizarre world where lava and ice existed almost side by side.

The lava region resembled a burning hell.

Crimson magma flowed through the land like blood vessels, waves of heat filled the air, and blazing light from enormous lava lakes illuminated the horizon as though even the sky itself had caught fire.

Yet directly beside that scorching world was a frozen region.

Endless snow covered towering icy peaks.

Snowflakes drifted through the air.

Cold winds cut through everything, while countless ice crystals reflected brilliant light.

Between those two extreme regions stretched a vast green forest.

Birds sang.

Flowers bloomed.

Creatures lived peacefully among the trees.

Streams flowed through the woodland, and sunlight filtered through the leaves, creating scattered patterns of light and shadow across the ground.

The vitality of that forest contrasted sharply with the raging lava and the frozen wasteland.

Yet all three environments existed in perfect balance.

Separating those completely different regions was a mysterious boundary.

The line itself was invisible, yet extraordinarily firm.

Any creature attempting to cross it would encounter a powerful force, almost as though the laws of nature themselves were protecting the division.

Kenichi knew it was actually Kaguya’s power maintaining everything.

She could prevent lava and ice from interacting while keeping each region inside its own territory.

It was also one of the ways she could imprison enemies and move between dimensions.

Still, Kenichi knew such abilities had to possess limitations.

If they were truly unrestricted, Kaguya would never have needed to fear the Otsutsuki Clan.

"This substance is called Pseudo-God Blood within the Otsutsuki Clan."

Kaguya finally spoke.

"It was plundered from other worlds by the highest-level powerhouses of our clan."

Kenichi’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"I don’t know exactly how it is created."

Kaguya continued.

"But according to the elders of the clan, the Lord Gods extracted it from Pseudo-Gods belonging to other worlds."

She looked down at the flowing energy with visible confusion.

"What I don’t understand is why this world also possesses it."

"Unless this substance came from a Pseudo-God."

"But I do not sense any sufficiently powerful presence nearby."

Kenichi was genuinely surprised.

He had not expected this energy to possess such an origin.

Pseudo-God Blood?

That made the situation far more interesting.

Kaguya clearly did not know everything, but that was understandable.

If she had possessed access to all the clan’s secrets, her position within the Otsutsuki hierarchy would have been very different.

The clan obviously maintained an extremely strict class structure.

Someone like Kaguya would only have received information appropriate to her station.

Kenichi suddenly regretted Isshiki’s death a little.

If Isshiki were still around, Kenichi could probably have extracted more information about this so-called Pseudo-God Blood from him.

If even Kaguya knew of it, there was little chance Isshiki had been ignorant.

Given Isshiki’s higher status, he probably knew much more.

Unfortunately, he was already dead.

There was no point thinking about it now.

Kenichi did not hesitate any longer.

He jumped into the well.

Kaguya followed him.

After examining the structure below, Kenichi quickly discovered that the energy was flowing from a narrow crack deeper underground.

He immediately used ninjutsu.

The soil, bricks, and countless stones ahead of him separated smoothly, almost like water parting around his body.

Kaguya followed beside him.

She was also curious.

According to what the elders had told her, Pseudo-God Blood was mainly used to power certain machines.

It supposedly had little other use.

So she was equally interested in discovering why it naturally existed here.

The two continued forward.

For a while, the only sound in the dark underground passage was their footsteps.

Kenichi felt slightly uncomfortable.

Walking alone through a dark tunnel with Kaguya inevitably reminded him of some of the fabricated memories he had implanted in her.

In those memories, he had imagined himself doing some rather unusual things with Kaguya, using quite a bit of inspiration accumulated from movies he had watched in his previous life.

Kenichi coughed awkwardly.

Then he condensed chakra into a glowing sphere that illuminated the passage.

Kaguya followed with a completely expressionless face.

Kenichi quietly breathed a sigh of relief and continued forward.

He had no idea exactly how far they traveled.

Judging by his sense of time, roughly half an hour passed before they finally reached the source.

It was an enormous underground cavern.

Dim light reflected across strangely shaped stalactites.

Some hung from the ceiling like inverted dragons.

Others rose from the ground like solitary cranes.

The air was damp and carried the faint scent of minerals.

And from the tips of those stalactites...

Strange liquids slowly dripped downward.

Drop by drop.

They gathered into tiny streams.

Those streams eventually merged into the flowing substance Kenichi had discovered inside the well.

The quiet sound of water echoed through the cavern like an ancient melody.

Clear crystals glittered in the weak light like stars scattered across a night sky.

Colorful minerals covered sections of the cave walls.

Some glowed with an orange-red radiance resembling flames.

Others emitted a deep blue light, calm as the sea.

Together, they made the cavern resemble a painting created casually by nature itself.

The light inside seemed completely separated from the outside world.

The cavern felt like an independent little realm.

Every falling droplet was clearly visible as it descended through the light.

They almost resembled tiny spirits leaping through the air.

As the droplets gathered, the stream became broader.

The current gradually strengthened.

For a moment, it almost seemed as though the passage of time itself had taken on a visible form.

The smell of damp earth, minerals, and limestone filled the air.

The environment was so quiet and ancient that Kenichi almost felt reluctant to disturb it.

The liquid continued dripping from the stalactites.

Different substances merged together.

And as they combined...

They transformed.

Kenichi stared in amazement.

Individually, those liquids were not the energy he needed.

But once they mixed together under these conditions, they naturally became the strange energy used by the time machine.

Kenichi could only marvel at it.

"So that’s how it happens..."

He stared at the flowing substance.

"This really is unbelievable."

Even Kaguya looked surprised.

According to everything she had been taught, Pseudo-God Blood could only be obtained by killing Pseudo-Gods.

Yet here...

Nature itself was producing it.

The amount was small.

But it was continuous.

Sustainable.

That alone made the discovery extraordinary.
