There was a loud SNAP!
It was like a spark jumping between a positive and negative terminal.
He ran onto the steel hatch and threw his arms around the two sisters.
Suddenly, everything fell silent. The only sound was their breathing.
Then, the sound of gears grinding, K-K-K, began. He looked around, his eyes following the source of the mechanical noises turning within the walls. He swallowed nervously.
A few screams rang out as the floor beneath them suddenly gave way, and the three of them began to plummet.
With a THUD, they landed in a sealed space!
Before Chen Yuan could get his bearings in the darkness, blinding lights flashed on. They were inside a sealed cabin, sitting upright in chairs. In front of them were complex and sophisticated instrument panels. Above their heads was an incredibly tough glass canopy, and on a nearby rack hung life vests… and even diving suits!
Water streamed from his pant cuffs in a steady line. Chen Yuan gasped for air, staring at the control panel before him. ’This doesn’t look like a lifeboat…’
’This is a fucking submarine!’
“Pilot, please fasten your seatbelt. The submarine is preparing for ejection launch. Press the button to begin the countdown. If no action is taken, the countdown will automatically begin in one minute.”
A cold, neutral, electronic voice announced.
’It really is a submarine!’
Chen Yuan wanted to complain, but there was no time. He scanned the control panel and found a red button covered by a glass case. No matter how he looked at it, though, it looked exactly like a missile launch button.
That’s how it always was in sci-fi movies…
“Honey, you two buckle up. Yaoyao, you open the cover and push the button.” Hearing the rumbling sound of water, Chen Yuan felt a sense of imminent danger. Even if it launched a missile, he had to do it. Otherwise, who knew what other disaster would befall this damn cruise ship.
“This one?”
“Yes!”
“Okay, I’m pressing it…”
Jiangg Yao nervously flipped open the cover. Her hand, still dotted with water droplets, trembled as she raised it high and slammed it down with all her might.
In that instant.
The surrounding lights began to flash wildly, and a countdown started, pushing the already tense atmosphere to a fever pitch. The sound of heartbeats, like war drums, pounded in their ears once more.
The three of them looked at each other, their faces pale.
“3… 2… 1…”
BOOM!
The moment the countdown ended!
The submarine shot forward like an arrow released from a bow, its momentum rivaling the speed of a cannonball. The three of them were slammed back into their seats by a powerful force; if not for the seatbelts, they would have been thrown hard against the wall behind them. Their vision was first enveloped by darkness, and then the cabin lights went out, leaving only rows and rows of illuminated lights on the control panel. Behind them, something seemed to be spinning at high speed.
In the blink of an eye, the submarine was launched clear of the cruise ship. Like a fish returning to the sea, it sent ripples through the water as it shot forward several hundred meters in moments, leaving the sinking vessel far behind.
Chen Yuan was knocked completely senseless. It took a great effort for him to regain his wits. His hands trembled as he gripped the armrest of his seat, and he rotated his sore neck.
“Are you two… all right?”
“I’m okay.” Jiangg Ning’s face was pale, but she managed a faint smile for him.
“So dizzy…” Jiangg Yao mumbled, swaying. She couldn’t tell which way was up.
Seeing that the two sisters were okay, a great weight was lifted from Chen Yuan’s heart. He felt the profound relief of having survived a disaster. Even though their situation was still dire, and they weren’t completely saved, at least they were alive.
The weather at sea was just too unpredictable. A sweet honeymoon trip had turned into a desperate escape for their lives. Who could have predicted this? Chen Yuan began to feel a pang of regret. ’If I’d known this would happen, I should have just stuck to a nice, safe trip within the country. Why did we have to come to these unfamiliar waters… What was I thinking back then? And why was the cruise ship unmanned?’
Everything was so convoluted he couldn’t make sense of it.
As he started to dwell on these thoughts, his consciousness began to fade again, as if he were about to pass out at any moment.
Chen Yuan pinched his thigh hard. ’I absolutely cannot pass out now. I still have to call for help, and I have to get my two wives home safely and in one piece.’
“That’s right… we have to get home…” he muttered to himself.
He checked his phone. Still no signal. His brow furrowed instantly.
“Mr. Pilot, current depth is approximately 300 meters. Do you wish to continue diving?”
The cold electronic voice sounded again.
“Stop diving! Can you search for the nearest land? Or is there any way to make a satellite call for help?” he asked urgently.
“Dive halted. Maintaining constant forward speed.”
“Attempting to make a satellite call for help… No response.”
“Attempting second satellite call for help… No response.”
“Searching for nearest landmass. Stand by… Search complete. Plot course to destination? Distance: 138 miles.”
“Plot it!” A flicker of joyous surprise appeared in Chen Yuan’s eyes. He unbuckled his seatbelt, walked over to the sisters, and said softly, “If there’s land, there’s a way. Let me see if I can find anything useful in this sub. We can’t just sit here and wait to die.”
He took off his suit jacket, tossing it aside. He grew calmer, his expression serious. “Okay, Ningning, Yaoyao, take off your wedding dresses. It’s too cold, you’ll get hypothermia. There should be spare clothes here.”
“Okay… Honey, having you here makes me feel so safe.” Jiangg Ning’s eyes blurred with tears of gratitude as she hugged him tightly.
“Honey, even if my sister and I die with you, I’ll have no regrets,” Jiangg Yao whispered, sniffling.
