- Chapter 394 - 255: I’ve Yearned to Be an Art Student Since I Was Little

He went to the campus store and bought a bottle of water, then made his way to the academic building. After splashing his face at the sink outside the restroom, he simply wiped his cheeks with his hand, leaving his temples damp as he returned to the classroom.
Naturally, his return attracted the gazes of several female students. Chen Yuan was already used to these gazes that followed him like security cameras. It was an indisputable fact that his birth mother had given him a handsome face.
Chen Yuan had few memories of his birth mother, which was why the strange dream he’d had of her last night was so surprising. Normally, a mother should be the most indispensable figure in anyone’s life, but thanks to the love of his adoptive mother, Chen Yuan never felt like he was missing anything. He didn’t miss his birth mother at all; she was a heartless and disloyal woman.
He still had a photo of her, which he’d found at Jiang Zhengfeng’s place during middle school. All he could say was that she had an otherworldly beauty.
Chen Yuan’s mind drifted for a moment. As the bell for class rang, students began to flood into the classroom one after another. They all looked listless, probably having just woken up after skipping the campus cleanup.
It was the same for Quan Yafeng and the others from his dorm. They had just sat down and were already yawning nonstop.
“Chen, could I borrow the notes you took yesterday?”
Li Bing, who sat two seats ahead of him, turned around and asked in a low voice.
“Sure.”
Chen Yuan passed the notebook over. Just then, the professor walked in, looking hurried and carrying a textbook, a simple voice amplifier strapped to his waist.
The plain, dry, yet meaningful lecture began, accompanied by the students’ incessant yawning.
…
The academic grind continued until four in the afternoon. The classes in the second semester of freshman year were clearly more demanding than the last. Landa University was a prestigious school, and in this hyper-competitive era, many students were consciously starting to think about their future.
Chen Yuan had fulfilled his duties as a student and was planning to head to the library to join the grind, but halfway there, he got a call from Liu Tingyue.
She said the Literature and Arts Club was having a meeting about something important, and all members had to be there.
He had no choice but to turn back and hurry over to the club room. By the time he arrived, the other members were already seated. As the only guy there, Chen Yuan found a seat away from everyone else, propped his chin on his hand, and listened to Liu Tingyue speak.
“Chen Yuan, we were just talking about you. You got here pretty fast.”
Liu Tingyue paused and called out Chen Yuan’s name directly, making him blink in surprise.
“Me?” he asked, pointing to himself.
“That’s right. The university administration sent out a notice this morning. In a couple of days, a renowned scholar is coming to give a lecture. It’s going to be recorded, audio and video, and posted on the official Landa University website. Our Literature and Arts Club has to coordinate with the school and take full responsibility for the event.”
“Okay,” Chen Yuan thought. ’Looks like I’m going to be busy.’ But he still didn’t quite understand. “So what were you saying about me earlier?”
“I was saying it’s a good thing I invited you to join the club. As the only guy here, it’s your time to shine.”
“It’s not manual labor, is it?” He had a bad feeling.
“You guessed it. Our club president has already assigned everyone else their tasks. Now, you’re the only one left, junior.” The girl with shoulder-length hair patted his shoulder with the mock gravity of someone entrusting him with a great mission.
“It’s so nice having a junior. We used to have to beg the guys in our classes to help, or get the Youth League Committee to assign someone. In the end, it’s better to have one of our own than to rely on others.”
“Totally.”
“We’re counting on you, junior! We’ll definitely treat you to ice cream when you get back. How about we go buy it right now!”
The three pretty sophomore seniors started flattering Chen Yuan before Liu Tingyue could even assign the task, blocking any chance he had to refuse.
Chen Yuan held his forehead, feeling a headache coming on. “So what exactly is the task?”
“It’s simple. Go over to the Lanjing Academy of Fine Arts next door, building B3, and find a senior named Lu Yiyi. You’ll follow her to move some paintings and calligraphy back here. We need them for promotional photos at our college.”
Landa University, being a well-known university, naturally had more than one college.
Smaller, miscellaneous departments like Civil Engineering, Environmental Machinery, Public Administration, and Information Technology were on the main campus. The Art Academy was right next door. Originally, the research institute and the science college were located together, tucked away on the corner of the hill behind the school. Later, due to a top-secret national project, the science college was separated and merged with the main campus.
“Go to the Art Academy?” Chen Yuan raised an eyebrow.
This job wasn’t so bad. The art students at the Lanjing Academy of Fine Arts were a collection of some of the most outstanding students from across the country, and over eighty percent of them were girls. During a campus military drill organized before, Chen Yuan and the others from the main campus had been lucky enough to watch a performance by the senior girls from the neighboring academy.
It could only be described as a feast for the eyes.
The senior girls next door all had an exceptional air about them, leagues better than the girls on the main campus.
Not long ago, a Landa University alumnus, senior Liu Liaoyi, was even trending on social media for winning a prestigious design award, attracting a lot of media attention both at home and abroad.
However, there was one downside to the Landa University Art College: its administration was too strict and the campus was very closed off, almost as strict as a high school. It was strictly forbidden for students from the main campus to visit and flirt with the female students there.
Because of this, countless students had muttered curses against Dean Zhou from next door, nicknaming her the “Zhou Zhiruo of the Art Academy.”
It was probably because Dean Zhou had been beautiful in her youth and couldn’t accept getting old. She also had a habit of confiscating the art students’ manicures, only to go back to her office and secretly study them herself.
Chen Yuan had, of course, heard about the famous Art Academy for a long time. Now that he had a chance to go, he felt a small thrill of excitement.
“I’ll give you the pass in a bit. You’d better call a few more people to help. I’ll also send you the item numbers for the exhibits. There’s no way you can move them all by yourself.” Liu Tingyue showed no sympathy for Chen Yuan now, treating him purely as a pack mule.
“I just finished cleaning up on the tree-lined avenue this morning. My shoulders are still sore…”
“Well… how about I come along and help? It really is a lot of stuff. It’s tough on you,” Liu Tingyue said tentatively, blinking.
“I want two ice cream bars! Mung bean flavor!”
Chen Yuan shot up from his chair, tossed out that sentence, and walked out the door without a second glance.
He left Liu Tingyue staring at his back, rolling her eyes and stomping her foot in frustration.
’Was all that really necessary?’ she couldn’t help but wonder.
Other guys would jump at the chance to talk to her more, but Chen Yuan avoided her like the plague.
’I’m not *that* ugly, am I?!’
Liu Tingyue felt a little hurt. She lowered her head and pressed her lips together tightly. She only snapped out of it when someone next to her called her name, and she continued to arrange the specific details of the event for the others.
Chen Yuan dashed back to his dorm. He checked his phone for the item numbers she’d sent. There were over a dozen exhibits in total. No wonder Liu Tingyue told him to find another guy to go with him. It was a run of more than ten minutes from his academic building to the Art Academy next door, to say nothing of making the trip back carrying exhibits.
The four o’clock sun still showed no signs of letting up. It was muggy and hot outside, and just the trip back to the dorm had left him feeling sticky. Chen Yuan could already imagine how sweaty he’d be after this errand.
He pushed open the door to his dorm room.
Quan Yafeng and Liu Nan were in the middle of a heated gaming session. Wei Zhen was standing to the side, holding a quilt, apparently about to go wash it.
“Yuan? Didn’t you go to the library? Was it too crowded to get a spot?” Wei Zhen asked, a little surprised.
“I got called to a Literature and Arts Club meeting on the way. Anyway, are you three free? Want to help me with something?” he asked tentatively.
“Nope, gotta wash my quilt.”
“Gaming.”
“It’s so hot out. Only an idiot would go work in this heat. Heh.”
All three of them refused in unison, showing no interest whatsoever.
After a full day of classes, they’d finally made it back to their comfortable dorm. They were even planning to skip dinner just to get their fill of gaming first.
As soon as Liu Nan finished speaking, he yelled, “They’re pushing A-short!” Quan Yafeng shushed him, telling him not to be so loud as he silently crept forward.
“I see…” Chen Yuan leaned against the doorframe and let out a dramatic sigh. “I guess I’ll have to ask some other classmates to help me, then.”
“Go ahead. See what idiot is willing to go with you. Heh,” Liu Nan said with a smirk.
“Alright, I’ll ask right now if any classmates are willing to go to the Art Academy next door.”
Chen Yuan sat down in Wei Zhen’s chair, dangling a few passes in his hand. He crossed his legs, picked up his phone, and started scrolling through his group chats.
“Wait, where did you say you were going?” Liu Nan, who had been dismissive just a moment ago, quickly realized something was off and whipped his head around.
“The Art Academy next door!” Wei Zhen, who had just stepped out the door, spun around and ran back in.
“Aren’t we not allowed in?” Quan Yafeng stopped playing his clutch round and asked in surprise.
“Normally, you’re not. But I’m on official business. See? I’ve even got the passes right here.”
“Holy shit! Yuan, you had such a great opportunity and didn’t tell your bros sooner? What am I even playing this stupid game for!” Liu Nan was ecstatic. “I’ve been dreaming of going over there! The senior girls are all super pretty!”
He was so excited he gulped. His mind was already filled with images of countless long-legged senior girls walking past him, laughing and chatting. He was practically drooling.
“And even at this time of year, there are tons of senior girls in short skirts over there! They all dress so well, too,” Wei Zhen added, equally excited.
“Forget it. Didn’t you guys not want to go? I wouldn’t want to make you suffer in this heat. I’ll just let some other classmates handle it.”
Chen Yuan waved a dismissive hand, looking scornfully at his two roommates’ dramatic change of heart.
“Yuan…”
“’Yuan’? Is that what you’re calling me?”
“No, no, no, Yuan! Chen! Godfather! You know, ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be an artist. My biggest dream was to dance elegant ballet on a stage,” Liu Nan appealed, trying to win him over with both emotion and reason. As he spoke, he started twirling in a little circle in the dorm room.
“Then why didn’t you?”
“Would you believe me if I said I failed the entrance exam?”
