’Three Reversed Dragons?’
Su Chen’s heart stirred, and he couldn’t help but ask, “What does that mean?”
Lan Hao glanced back, looking as if he were about to share a secret. The long, narrow metal corridor was empty save for the constant glow of the lights on either side, the surveillance equipment hanging from the ceiling, and the two of them.
After confirming they were alone, Lan Hao lowered his voice and explained, “You saw it yourself that day. We were both favored by two Spiritual Dragons. Only Wan Chen received three.”
“Even though that was just the initial judgment from half of the Spiritual essence, it still reveals a few things. Barring any surprises, he’s bound to have an advantage.”
Lan Hao’s eyes gleamed. “But the Morning Star Tier’s Spiritual essence isn’t some inanimate object. If you, who were only favored by two Spirit Dragons, can defeat someone favored by three, you’ll prove your own strength. Naturally, it will see you in a different light.”
Su Chen had a sudden realization. ’So there’s an elimination mechanism even among those who have been acknowledged.’
’That must be why the Great Venerable was so pleased when I defeated Hongxuan.’
“But I’m only Tier Four…” Su Chen said, hesitating.
“Lord Qing Cang seems to have a way.” Lan Hao didn’t elaborate, lest his attempt to instigate be too obvious. He wanted to appear as if he were just making a suggestion.
Instead, he sighed. “However, this method is certainly not easy. Even back where we’re from, Wan Chen is considered outstanding.”
Seeing Su Chen’s thoughtful expression, Lan Hao added, “But if you can defeat Wan Chen, take his place, and gain the favor of three Spirit Dragons, you’ll have an excellent chance of becoming the chosen one when the two halves of the Spiritual essence merge.”
As he spoke, he seemed worried Su Chen might not understand what ’the chosen one’ meant, so he thoughtfully explained the uniqueness of the Morning Star Tier and the importance of its chosen successor.
Su Chen dutifully put on an expression of sudden understanding and longing, with just a hint of anticipation. He asked, “After becoming the chosen one, can I become Lord Qing Cang’s student?”
’This guy is clearly trying to bait me into fighting Wan Chen,’ Su Chen thought. He had mostly figured it out, but he also wanted to use the opportunity to learn more about what lay beyond Red Thunder Star.
’Lord Qing Cang’s student?’ Lan Hao scoffed inwardly. ’He’s from a Desolate Planet, after all. His horizons are far too limited.’
“Perhaps, but…” Lan Hao trailed off, as if there were things he couldn’t say.
They had arrived at Su Chen’s room. After registering his biometrics, he entered. The room was quite spacious and well-equipped, and the window on the wall offered a clear view of the scene outside.
Once they were inside, Lan Hao said, “Actually, Lord Qing Cang specifically instructed us not to tell you all this for the time being.”
“But we really hit it off, so I’ll tell you anyway.”
He wasn’t lying. To prevent any unexpected complications, they weren’t supposed to reveal too much information about the Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator to the candidates.
But to stoke Su Chen’s ambition, Lan Hao decided to reveal what he could. He said mysteriously, “If you become the chosen one of the Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator, you’ll have a chance to catch the eye of the Bronze Ancient King.”
’The Bronze Ancient King…’ Su Chen’s interest was piqued. He knew very little, forcing him to be extremely cautious when dealing with these people. If he could close this information gap, he would be able to act with much more confidence.
“Is this Bronze Ancient King very powerful?” Su Chen asked, cleverly using his feigned ignorance to provoke a response.
“Powerful?” Lan Hao nearly dropped his facade. He shot to his feet and began pacing back and forth, looking extremely agitated. “He’s more than powerful, he’s simply…”
He trailed off, at a loss for words. His mouth opened and closed several times before he finally managed to force out a single word: “…powerful!”
Su Chen was speechless. Lan Hao’s expression flickered—’dealing with these bumpkins is such a pain’—and he forced himself to say patiently,
“It’s difficult to describe in words. You can only truly appreciate the power of the Bronze Ancient King once you understand the Dust Star Sea.”
“The Dust Star Sea…” Su Chen latched onto another new term, his expression once again turning to one of confusion.
Lan Hao frowned. ’Forget it,’ he thought. ’I’ve already said this much. Giving him some basic information shouldn’t be a huge problem.’
“The so-called Dust Star Sea is a region that encompasses a vast number of planets, like Red Thunder Star,” he said, his explanation a bit convoluted.
Su Chen was inwardly speechless. ’Isn’t that just a large star sector?’
Lan Hao continued, “The Royal Court is its primary ruler, supported by the Five Great Sects as pillars. The Bronze Ancient King is the master of the Bronze Sect.”
’The Royal Court, the Five Great Sects…’ Su Chen mused. From those few words alone, he could imagine the sheer number of factions and entanglements involved.
’And what role do the Deceitful Gods play in all this? An external enemy?’
’Does that mean Qing Cang and his people don’t have a strong relationship with the Royal Court? Could they even have come here behind the Royal Court’s back?’
After speaking, Lan Hao frowned again, feeling his explanation had been too simplistic. Words could hardly describe the vastness and grandeur of the Dust Star Sea, the power of the Royal Court, or the magnificence of the Five Great Sects.
No matter how eloquently he put it, it would still sound superficial.
Finally, he just said bluntly, “Anyway, as long as you can catch the Bronze Ancient King’s eye, problems like your planet’s current Holy Banquet will be nothing.”
Hearing this, Su Chen couldn’t help but feel a stir of ambition. This Bronze Ancient King sounded like an incredibly powerful patron—a backer of unimaginable proportions.
’But latching onto a patron of that caliber,’ he mused, ’must be absurdly difficult.’
’First, I’d have to become the chosen one of the Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator. The problem is, even if I really did become the chosen one, whether I could ever even meet the Ancient King is another question entirely.’
’I’m just a nobody with no connections. Even if Lord Qing Cang and the Bronze Sect accepted me, others would never just stand by and let it happen.’
’After all, every Morning Star Tier position is a slot that gets filled. If you get it and I don’t, that’s a devastating loss for me, isn’t it?’
