Chapter 470:The Flutist
Time slowly passed after the wedding and the earlier conflicts.
For reasons that no one clearly understood, the atmosphere of war across the frontier suddenly seemed to calm down. The demon forces that had been moving aggressively earlier slowed their movements, and several battlefronts fell quiet.
No one fully understood what was happening.
Rumors spread across the frontier that another round of negotiations might soon begin between the empire and the demon forces.
Whether those rumors were true or not, the battlefield remained strangely silent.
Ethan did not spend too much time worrying about it.As long as the war had paused for the moment, he was happy to enjoy the peaceful time.
For the first time in a long while, the people of Blanks could breathe without the constant pressure of battle.
With the addition of Amber and Kassandra, two powerful Legendary rank fighters, the safety of Blanks had become even more secure than before.
Few forces in the surrounding regions would dare challenge them directly.
Meanwhile, Ethan’s children had also grown up.
Many of them had already proven their ability in various matters, so Ethan began distributing several fiefdoms under Blanks to them so they could begin managing their own territories.
Ray was granted the fiefdom of Silverridge, a prosperous valley known for its fertile farmland and trade routes.
Herion was given control of Ironhold, a fortified mining region located near the northern mountains.
Nera was assigned the elegant river province of Lunavale, a peaceful territory famous for its markets and waterways.
Leo received Stormwatch, a coastal stronghold overlooking the western cliffs and sea routes.
Each of them accepted the responsibility seriously and began managing their lands under Ethan’s guidance.
However, one person firmly refused to participate.
Miranda.
When Ethan mentioned the idea of giving her a fiefdom, she rejected it immediately.
Her refusal was so direct that Ethan could only shake his head.
Even he secretly admitted that giving Miranda full control over a city might lead to chaos. For the safety of the citizens, he decided not to force the responsibility onto her.
But that did not mean she could simply wander around freely.
She still had to assist with the administration and protection of the city when needed.
On one quiet afternoon, Miranda wandered through the streets of Blanks.
The city had changed a lot over the years.
New buildings had been built. Markets had grown larger, and trade caravans now traveled regularly through the gates.
Miranda walked slowly along the stone road while looking around.
She could not help remembering how the place had looked during her childhood.
Back then the streets were smaller, and many parts of the city were still under construction.
Now everything looked larger and more lively.
Merchants called out to customers while children ran through the streets laughing. The smell of food drifted from nearby stalls while blacksmiths worked loudly in their shops.
Miranda walked through the busy streets quietly while observing everything.
Eventually she reached the central square of the city.A large group of people had gathered there.
Curious voices could be heard from the crowd.
Miranda raised an eyebrow slightly.
Her curiosity was immediately sparked.
She stepped closer and pushed gently through the gathered people.
Then she finally saw what everyone was watching.
At the center of the square stood a man.
Beside him was a massive Direwolf.
The creature’s thick grey fur and sharp teeth made it look terrifying even while sitting calmly.
Yet the man seemed completely relaxed while playing with it.
He scratched the wolf behind the ear while the beast wagged its tail slightly like a large dog.
Miranda blinked in surprise.
“Ahh… isn’t it dangerous?” she asked while looking at the huge wolf with curiosity.
“Don’t worry. It’s in full control of the tamer.”
The man standing near the large Direwolf said those words confidently while smiling at the gathered crowd.
The people around relaxed slightly after hearing him.
The massive beast continued moving around calmly while the tamer guided it with simple hand gestures. Sometimes the Direwolf would sit, and sometimes it would leap lightly across the open space in the center of the square.
Each movement was smooth and controlled.
“Look at that!”
“It really listens to him!”
Several people clapped and cheered while watching the performance.
Children laughed loudly while pointing at the huge wolf.
Miranda stood near the edge of the crowd with her arms folded while watching the scene carefully.
The wolf was clearly powerful. Its sharp claws and heavy muscles were enough to tear a person apart in seconds. Even while it behaved calmly, the natural aura of a predator surrounded it.
Still, the crowd slowly relaxed as the performance continued.
The tamer guided the Direwolf through several tricks. It jumped over a wooden barrel, rolled onto the ground, and even howled loudly when the man signaled it.
People cheered loudly each time.
The small show continued for several minutes.
Then suddenly something unexpected happened.
A small boy, no more than five or six years old, stepped forward from the edge of the crowd.
In his tiny hand he held a small piece of meat that had likely fallen from a nearby food stall.
He giggled happily and waved it toward the wolf.
“Hehehe… doggy, bite it…”
Several adults noticed him at the same moment.
“Hey!”
“Kid, stop!”
But the child had already stepped closer.
The Direwolf, which had been calmly playing around, suddenly froze.
Its ears twitched and its sharp eyes locked onto the piece of meat.
For a brief second the atmosphere changed.
The beast’s body lowered slightly.A faint murderous intent flickered within its gaze.
Then it moved.
WHOOSH!
The Direwolf suddenly accelerated toward the child with terrifying speed.
“No!”
People screamed in panic.
The crowd instantly scattered backward.Adults pushed away in fear while some tried to grab the child but were too far away.
Miranda’s eyes widened.
She reacted immediately. Her body moved forward at once.
She dashed toward the child as fast as she could.
But the Direwolf was faster.
The beast closed the distance in a blink.
Its massive jaws opened wide as it rushed toward the small boy.Behind the child, the adults had already stepped back in panic.
The boy’s legs trembled.
He tried to step away but stumbled and fell onto the ground.
The piece of meat dropped from his hand.
The Direwolf’s jaws were already descending toward him.
Just when everyone thought the worst was about to happen a sound suddenly appeared in the air.
A soft melody.
It was calm and clear.
The gentle sound of a flute floated across the square.
The melody was strangely beautiful.
It felt completely out of place against the chaos happening around it.
Yet the effect was immediate. The Direwolf froze and its body stopped in the middle of its leap.
Its glowing eyes slowly lost their sharp focus.
The beast landed quietly on the ground only a few steps away from the frightened child.
The melody continued drifting through the air.
The Direwolf’s body relaxed and the murderous intent disappeared completely.
Its head lowered slowly.
Then, as if completely tamed by the sound, the giant beast simply sat down calmly.
The entire square fell into stunned silence.
People stared at the scene with wide eyes.
Miranda, who had nearly reached the child, stopped abruptly. Her gaze slowly turned toward the direction where the flute melody was coming from.
