Chapter 1382: Demon Conspiracy?
I flew over to the unconscious guy that was left on the ground, inspecting him carefully as I wondered why he would appear from where the portal had been.
Looking at him closely, he looks just like a normal person with nothing special about him.
He looked like any other Mahun though I guess the only thing ’special’ about him was the fact that he was clearly a Mercenary or Dungeoneer seeing that he was wearing armour and had a sword on his waist as well.
So why the heck was this guy here then? Because I don’t think the demons just randomly grabbed this guy and put him here, did they?
I checked to make sure that he wasn’t dead and when I knew he was still breathing, I tried to shake him awake.
But despite me shaking him quite hard, he still remained unconscious so I tried to heal him first.
Even after that, I found no change with him so I tried a more forceful approach where I tried slapping him awake.
That seemed to do the trick as he jolted and scrambled away from me in fear, only to stop when he realised who he was looking at.
“In… Invincible Aster?”
Seriously, that title sounds so tacky… At least he recognised me I guess.
I narrowed my eyes at him, “Do you know what happened?”
He blinked before letting out a gasp, “Ah!! You have to warn everyone!! Demons are coming!! They’re going to attack the Arena!!”
I shifted myself aside and jerked my thumb over my shoulder, showing him the mass of demons that were currently being purged by Ira and Tsara.
“A little late for that…” I informed him with a wry smile.
He grimaced, “Ah… I see… What… What happened?”
“I should be the one asking you that question. There was a portal here and some demons were maintaining it. When I killed them, the portal disappeared and then you appeared in its place like you were a conduit for it. What do you remember?”
He frowned, “So I was tricked after all… Lady Aster, please look at this…”
He reached under his collar to pull out what looked like an amulet with a metal symbol in the shape of an anatomical heart.
But the moment he took it out, it glowed red for a moment before it suddenly started disintegrating into dust.
The guy was just staring at the thing in shock before he let out a gasp, “No! No, no!! This… This isn’t what they told me!!”
He gasped as he suddenly froze up to clutch at his chest before collapsing on the ground.
I immediately tried to heal him with [Heal] but that only seemed to alleviate some of his pain and was completely ineffective in curing him.
He shook his head, “I’m… I’m done for… Lady Aster… But… Ugggh… Demons… Plan… Uggghhh!! Nomed… Metropolis… They… Favours…. Ahhhhh!!”
He suddenly screamed and his chest exploded in a shower of blood.
I thought I would be drenched in it until I realised the blood froze into droplets floating in the air with his heart hovering above his chest.
The guy was still alive for a few more seconds, his hand reaching up as though trying to reclaim his heart before it fell to his side.
I also tried to grab it back for him but my fingers just passed through the heart as though it was just an illusion.
Even as I watched, the blood swirled in a vortex around us before it reformed around the heart to envelop it in a blood red ball.
The ball then compressed itself and shrunk to the size of a bead before it winked out of existence.
What the heck?
“Aster?” I heard Ira calling out from behind.
I turned back to see both Ira and Tsara standing there casually, the mountain of demon corpses scattered behind them.
I then realised that I had a corpse with their chest exploded in front of me so a normal person might assume that I had just tore this guy’s body open.
Just as I was about to explain, Ira pointed at that guy on the floor.
“Did he attack you, Aster?”
“Eh? What? No. He appeared when the portal disappeared. I think he was supposed to be some kind of anchor or something for the portal?”
Tsara hummed, “Hmm… So the demons used him to create that portal… And once those channellers were killed, the strain of maintaining the portal caused him to explode. But… I do not see any blood?”
I grimaced and just went ahead to tell them what happened after I woke the guy up.
Tsara tilted her head, “A pendant, Lady Aster?”
I nodded, “In the shape of a heart.”
Ira tapped on her chin, “And he mentioned Nomed Metropolis… Home to the Infrids…”
I then realised something, “Wait, we can figure out all of that later! We should go check on the others first! They might still be fighting the demons right now!!”
I picked up the corpse and flew back with the other two towards the clearing again.
But it seems like my concerns were unnecessary as I found my girls standing on top of a pile of demon corpses with everyone cheering in victory alongside them.
I descended to land near them and all of them immediately leapt off to rush towards me.
“Wahahaha! Sister Aster!! You did it!!”
“Mistress, were you hurt?”
“Aster!!! Hmmm? Wait… Why are you carrying that?”
I lowered the corpse to the floor and the others also started to gather around.
One group in particular suddenly rushed towards the corpse, the group made up of a Rejmar, a Trasif and two Mahuns, all of them being male aside from the Trasif whom I wasn’t sure what their gender was but they looked quite feminine at least.
“No! No, no, no!! Come on man! You can’t do this to us!!” The Mahun cried out, holding the corpse of whom I assume must be his party member.
The Trasif turned to me and asked with a shaky voice, “What… What happened to him?”
“He was taken by the demons… I’m sorry.”
“I… I see…”
I was expecting them to break down crying or something until the other Mahun party member sighed, “Well fuck… There goes our entire savings then… Where’s the nearest temple we can revive him at?”
Oh yeah… People can just be resurrected back to life… I forgot about that.
Looks like they are more upset that they’re going to have to spend their money on bringing him back to life than the fact that he’s dead.
I cleared my throat, “Ahem… Could I follow you guys? There’s some things I need to ask him…”
The party members looked confused but none of them stopped me so we ended up heading towards the temple in the village itself.
I was wondering if there was even a priestess here for the temple since last I checked, the entire place was empty.
But as though they were already expecting this, there were several priestesses inside the temple when we entered and I noted that they were dressed quite differently from each other.
It took me a moment to realise that it was because they were priestesses of different gods gathered here to maintain the temple together.
But so many of them are capable of using resurrection magic?
That was what I thought until I realised it was only just one priestess that was going around using the resurrection magic while the others were doing their best to assist her.
“Where were they when we were here earlier?” I asked in a whisper.
“I told them to vacate it for you, Boss,” Emilia whispered back.
Ah… I see… That explains…
The party we were following weren’t the only ones here as it looks like there were a few people also gathered here presumably to bring back someone who had died during the fight.
Each of those corpses had a small mountain of Creas placed beside them which I figured were offerings to Srii to allow the dead to return.
I got to see the priestess praying in front of the corpses and watching as the bodies in front of her were engulfed in a ray of light before the corpse sat up, fully healed without a mark on them.
The corpse of the guy I carried back was laid on the ground and his party members quickly gathered a pile of Creas to be placed on the floor beside the corpse.
The priestess quickly came over to the party and clasped her hands together, “A resurrection, yes? Ok… Oh Goddess Srii… I pray in your name to grant us your mercy and benevolence. Allow this soul to return and accept this offering in exchange. Please guide this– Ah?”
The priestess stopped her prayer and looked down at the corpse.
She frowned before looking back up at the party, “How… Did he die?”
“The demons of course?” The Rejmar answered.
She looked back down and shook her head, “I’m sorry… His resurrection is not possible… His soul is… Not in Srii’s domain… Someone else has claimed it. I’m sorry…”
…
What?
