Chapter 1383: There’s A Demon Lord?
“What do you mean?!” The Rejmar shouted.
The priestess winced, though she didn’t look surprised by his outburst, “I apologise… His soul has been claimed by someone else instead of Goddess Srii… In that instance… I’m afraid revival is not possible…”
The Rejmar frowned, “His soul was claimed by someone else? What does that even mean?!”
The priestess shook her head, “I assume this is your first time seeing something like this? There are cases where a person may be cursed or had their souls promised to another being instead… That would result in their soul being diverted to another place instead of Goddess Srii’s domain… In such cases, I’m afraid our resurrection magic is not able to bring them back…”
The Trasif stepped forward, “Are you telling us that… He is dead permanently?!”
“Unfortunately… Unless whoever has possession of his soul relinquishes it… But by then, I would think it would be too late to resurrect him anymore…”
“Then he’s not coming back?!”
“I’m afraid so… You have my condolences…”
The priestess bowed to them but moved on quickly, as though this was something that she had already seen before.
I guess as a priestess, she has seen these types of things happen countless of times so it wasn’t something new for her.
But I guess for Mercenaries like these guys… This was something that they’ve seen for themselves for the first time.
They looked down at the corpse of their party members and I could see the emotion of grief settling on their faces as they were slowly realising that their friend was dead.
I cleared my throat, “I’m sorry to bring this up right now… But perhaps you could give us a clue on what might have led to this outcome?”
They turned to me almost at the same time.
“What do you mean?” The Rejmar asked.
“When I first found him, he had this weird amulet on him. But when the amulet broke, his heart exploded out of his chest and disappeared into thin air. I assume that whatever happened to him was related to that amulet so I figured if we knew where he got that amulet from, we might know why he is unable to be resurrected.”
They looked at each other.
“An amulet? Was there such a thing?”
“Did he have a keepsake or something?”
“I don’t remember him having anything like that…”
“Maybe it wasn’t his?”
“He said something about Nomed Metropolis…” I commented, hoping that piece of information might help.
A figurative lightbulb seemed to have gone off as they suddenly remembered something.
“That’s… That’s right! I almost forgot about that! Didn’t he buy some kind of charm or something while we were there?!”
“I thought that was some enchanted artefact?”
“Yeah, he said that he got it from a store that was selling enchanted items… What was the enchantment again?”
“If I remember correctly… It was supposed to increase his strength.”
“And it definitely worked, didn’t it? He got way stronger after he bought it. That’s the whole reason why we came here to begin with! To let him test his strength!”
Ok… I guess now we’re getting somewhere…
“So he got that amulet thing in Nomed Metropolis? Did you guys see him get the thing?”
The Trasif shook his… Her? I don’t really know if this is a guy or girl since they’re flat but the face looks really feminine… I’ll just assume it’s a he since everyone else is a male.
“No, we did not… He just returned to the inn showing off the amulet and telling us about how he bought it and its effects… That’s all we know… Does that mean…”
I nodded, “I believe… Whoever sold that amulet to your party member might have ties to the demons… One of its effects might have been to open a portal to allow more demons to cross over but I’m not sure what caused it to trigger to begin with? Why was he even out there in the middle of the forest?”
One of the Mahuns seemed to hesitate for a moment before he raised his hand, “I… I heard him say something about meeting someone after that battle royale event… I thought he was going to find someone to fuck so I didn’t think anything about it…”
I nodded, “So he went out to find someone… Probably also someone related to the demons or something… Then they triggered the portal to appear through him which caused this incident…”
The Trasif was looking a little worried, “Will… Will we be held responsible for this?”
I shrugged, “I don’t think this is for me to say… But I believe you won’t be since none of you were complicit in this… Well… Disaster.”
They winced at what I chose to call it but I don’t think there’s any other term for what we had experienced here…
I pursed my lips, “I don’t suppose you could tell us anything else about this supposed pendant that he had? Something that might help us track down the perpetrator?”
Sure, there’s not really a reason for me to actually track whoever was responsible down nor help them take revenge, especially since this doesn’t seem like a targeted attack on me either.
It looked more like we were just at the wrong place at the wrong time… But I figured that since we would be heading towards Nomed Metropolis after this anyway, I might as well just find out what I can before we reach there.
There’s also a rather concerning possibility that whoever sold this guy the pendant might have also done the same thing to other people and spread them out throughout the World. And right now, there might be people who were ticking time bombs who might be used for the demons to make portals to cross over here.
Since I have yet to finish my journey around the World, I would very much like to preserve it before I have finished exploring it, you know?
They shook their heads at me.
The Rejmar shook his head, “Unfortunately… We weren’t with him when he got it… So we don’t know where he got that from…”
The Trasif spoke up, “Wait… I think I remember him saying something about the person selling it to him being some pretty girl and he was even getting a blowjob while he was perusing her goods?”
What? Isn’t that kind of a big clue? All I have to do is find a shop that gives their customers blowjobs or something, right?
That was what I thought until one of the Mahuns scoffed, “Did you forget what kind of place that was? Pretty much everywhere gives that kind of service. That’s why we even visited there to begin with.”
… Ok…
The other Mahun turned to me, “I remember… He mentioned something about the store looking weird and mysterious… But that’s all I know…”
That’s basically nothing but I guess I will keep a look out for a ’mysterious’ store while I’m there…
I nodded at them, “Thank you for the information… Once again, you have my condolences.”
That seemed to bring them back to reality as they remembered their friend was now dead.
“Godamnit… This stupid guy… Really gone and got himself killed…” The Rejmar cursed.
I left them to grieve and exited the temple with my girls.
“Seems like we’ll already have problems before we even get there,” I commented once we were outside.
Lisa pouted, “I think it’ll be fine, Aster! Surely this is just like… Something that would only happen once! There’s definitely no demonic conspiracy where the demons are trying to launch some kind of demonic invasion around the World! That can’t be the case at all!”
“Yeah… I would like to believe you too, Lisa… But let’s just prepare for the worst I guess…” I sighed.
“Ugh… Anyway… You mentioned about that heart pendant or something, right Aster? What does it look like?”
“I think I did mention it looked like an anatomical heart, didn’t I?”
“What does it look like exactly?”
I got a piece of paper from Minnera and started drawing on it to the best of my ability, sketching its shape out from what I remembered in that few seconds that I managed to see it before it crumpled into dust.
When I was done, Ira jolted at the sight of the shape and it was clear she knew what it was.
“Ira?” I asked, drawing attention to her.
She sucked in a breath, “I know that symbol… It’s the symbol of an organisation but I didn’t know they had ties to demons…”
I nodded at her to elaborate and she sighed, “It was when I first found myself in this World… They were the first ones I found and also part of the reason why I’m on this path to overthrow the Gods before I met you, Aster… If I’m correct, what they seek is to bring a Demon Lord into this World.”
…
Seriously? I never thought I would find that kind of stereotypical plot here…
Wait… Doesn’t that mean those Off-Worlders we met that claimed they were the hero going to slay the demon lord were actually correct all this while?
