Chapter 1428: Scouting out the competition

“It’s been a while since we’ve just walked around like this.”

A wry smile appeared on Lin Fan’s face when he heard Ye Qing Huan say this, but he just nodded in agreement to this.

If a girl said something like this, it was always better to just agree with her rather than say anything.

Not to mention that there was that happy smile on her face.

It wasn’t as if there was anything to lose to let her enjoy herself like this. His goal in coming out was to just wander around and see if he could find anything interesting.

There was still some time before the Dao Sect ruins opened up after all, so it was just him killing time before the main event.

Though it wasn’t as if he didn’t have a single goal when wandering around like this.

Just like how the Heavenly Demon Sect summoned him here, the righteous sects would also summon their disciples for this matter.

So that was why Lin Fan wanted to take a look at the disciples of those righteous sects.

They would be different from the ones that he had met previously since they would be the proper core disciples of the righteous sects. They were the ones that would have the right to become the leaders of the righteous sects when the time came.

As such, he wanted to see exactly what he was dealing with.

It made it easier for him since they had no idea who he was and it would be easy for him to sneak around.

As for Ye Qing Huan…she had been hiding her real identity for so long that it became second nature for her to hide herself. As long as someone didn’t have the same cheat abilities that Lin Fan had, they would never be able to discover her real identity.

Only when he arrived in the proper part of the town, he couldn’t help being disappointed by what he saw.

It wasn’t hard to find the disciples of the righteous sects since they weren’t even hiding their identity. With how they dressed and carried themselves, it was as if they wanted everyone to know who they were.

Simply put, they really just wanted to show off their identities as disciples of the Five Great Sects with how they acted.

But the reality of the situation was different.

“They’re the cover?” Lin Fan asked Ye Qing Huan, to which she gave a nod in response.

When they made it this obvious, it was hard for Lin Fan not to figure out what this situation was. These disciples attracted the attention of all the people of the town while the real powerhouses of the Five Great Sects hid themselves until the right time.

When they went into the Dao Sect ruins, those elders would be the ones that did the real exploration.

Though it wasn’t as if these disciples wouldn’t be allowed in either.

So that was why Lin Fan wanted to take a closer look at these disciples.

Only he was still disappointed by what he saw.

“Is that really all that they have? Are you sure that they aren’t hiding anything?”

When Ye Qing Huan shook her head, an even further disappointed look appeared on Lin Fan’s face. He didn’t doubt her response since he knew that she would know these core disciples of the righteous sects better than him.

It was just that they were a bit too weak in his eyes…

“Well, I guess there’s a reason why the Heavenly Demon Sect has been suppressing the righteous sects all this time.” That was all that Lin Fan could think when he saw them.

It wasn’t as if they were weak per say since each one of them was far stronger than any of the disciples of the Love Sect. They were even stronger than the outer sect and inner sect disciples that Lin Fan had seen in the Heavenly Demon Sect.

Only compared to the other core disciples that he had met, they seemed a bit lacking.

In short, they were generally a minor realm or two lower than the core disciples of the Heavenly Demon Sect. There were even a few of the younger ones that were a full major realm lower than the Heavenly Demon Sect core disciples.

So it felt like each of the righteous sects was on a lower level than the Heavenly Demon Sect as a whole.

The one advantage that they had was the number of people that they had.

They far outnumbered the core disciples of the Heavenly Demon Sect.

“But that’s just how it is between the righteous sects and the Heavenly Demon Sect.” Lin Fan thought with a secret sigh.

Though he was disappointed, Lin Fan didn’t leave right away as he continued watching over the disciples of the righteous sects. He was watching them to learn more about them and to see if there was anything that he could exploit between them.

“It seems like they’re not so different from the ones that I met before.” Lin Fan thought when he saw how they reacted.

The disciples of each of the righteous sects seemed to keep to themselves with how they didn’t really interact with one another. But they also made sure that they remained in close range of each other, as if they were watching over each other.

However, there was one thing that suddenly happened.

Though they were considered righteous sects, the way that they acted…

“They’re kind of like bandits.”

Lin Fan thought this because he watched as disciples of the Mount Hua Sword Sect and the Kunlun Sect clashed with each other.

As for the reason they clashed, it was because of a girl.

The disciples of the two sects had been enjoying themselves at a bar in town until all of a sudden these two sides clashed.

It started with two disciples both choosing the same girl to serve them, but then they started bringing in more and more of the disciples that were with them.

It seemed like the girl didn’t know what to do at first, but it didn’t take long for them to completely forget about her. After all, she was nothing more than a fuse to light the keg.

They had been preparing to fight with each other to begin with, they just needed something to get it started. Which was why they both chose the same girl at the same time.

It was almost as if they had premeditated this.

Of course, it was to make sure that they would be able to suppress each other with how they acted towards the other group.

Even though they were technically here together to stop the Heavenly Demon Sect from taking anything, they were still competing against each other as well. The righteous sects all wanted to take as much as they could from the Dao Sect ruins for their own sects.

While watching, it didn’t take long for the other two sects to get involved as well.

The Buddhists got involved by trying to calm them down while secretly stoking the flames. The Mount Emei disciples ’took’ the side of the girl that they were fighting over, even though they ignored her just like the rest of them.

All of them were just using this as an excuse to pose in front of each other.

While this was happening, Lin Fan was taking notes.

He was watching all of the different things that these disciples from the righteous sects did and made sure to record them for later. After all, these were all clues as to how to provoke them when they were in the Dao Sect ruins.

These were fundamental behaviour issues for these disciples, so it wasn’t as if they would be able to fix these things. So when they were in the ruins, he would be able to incite them with just these things.

“But they really are disappointing.” Lin Fan still said as he watched these disciples from the righteous sects.

Ye Qing Huan didn’t say anything or give a reaction, but the look on her face was more than enough to show that she was thinking the same thing. Compared to the disciples of the Heavenly Demon Sect, they really were a bit too lacking.

“Is there anything else that we can see?” Lin Fan asked once he felt that he had observed the disciples of the righteous sects enough. He felt that there wasn’t anything else that he would be able to learn from them since he had understood most of what they were about just from this short period of observing them.

Ye Qing Huan gave a simple shake of the head in response before looking at the city walls in the distance.

Though she didn’t say anything, the way that she looked at the walls was enough to show what she was implying.

“So they’re watching the walls.” Lin Fan thought to himself.

He had already expected this and he knew that he would be able to sneak out if need be, but he didn’t want to cause any trouble right now. Until things went south, it was best to lay low and watch over everything that happened.

Only there was one thing that he couldn’t help wondering about regarding this matter.

“How are we going to leave the city when the time comes?”

Lin Fan already guessed that the Heavenly Demon Sect would have prepared something since they knew where the Dao Sect ruins were. It would be embarrassing if they couldn’t go to the Dao Sect ruins after coming this far.

“It seems like I’ll just have to wait and see.”
