Office Breeding Policy

Chapter 12: Quiet Circulation

Ethan woke up with Kai’s mouth already on him.

Not polite, not testing. Just open and wet and moving like the man currently wearing his face had decided the rules document needed a practical demonstration before breakfast.

Ethan’s hips jerked. A broken sound tore out of the deeper throat. "We, fuck, we said morning rules review"

Kai pulled off just long enough to speak, lips shiny. "This is the review. Section three, residual heat management. I’m being extremely thorough."

He went back down.

Ethan lasted less than two minutes. He came hard enough that his vision whited out, one hand fisted in the soft hair that used to be his, the other clutching the sheet like it could save him from the fact that he was starting to look forward to this.

Kai sat up, wiped his mouth with the back of Ethan’s soft hand, and looked entirely too pleased.

"Amendment noted," he said. "Orgasms before coffee improve morale and reduce the chance of you trying to strangle me with a tie. I’ll add it to the appendix."

Ethan stared at the ceiling and tried to remember how to hate him properly. The feeling was getting harder to locate.

The office felt different the moment they stepped onto the 27th floor.

Not loud different, quiet different. The kind of shift that lived in glances held half a second too long and conversations that stopped when certain people walked past.

Priya was already at her desk. When Kai passed, she didn’t look up, but the corner of her mouth curled like she could still feel him. Marcus from Legal appeared in the hallway near the copy room, caught Kai’s eye, and gave a single, almost imperceptible nod before disappearing again.

The whispers had started, kai collected them like data points.

Two analysts in the break room lowered their voices when he walked in. Someone in Accounting asked Priya if she was feeling all right because she "looked different." A senior associate muttered something about "the intern’s new confidence" and then immediately changed the subject when Kai looked directly at him.

Ethan, hovering near the elevators in the leather jacket for their midday check-in, felt the change like static on skin.

"It’s spreading," he said under his breath when Kai joined him.

Kai’s smile was small and sharp. "It’s circulating. There’s a difference, circulation is controlled. Spreading is what happens when you don’t write rules."

"You’re enjoying the attention."

"I’m enjoying the fact that three separate people have found excuses to walk past my cubicle this morning. One of them dropped a pen. It was the least subtle thing I’ve ever seen, I almost applauded."

Ethan pinched the bridge of the new nose. "We need to slow down."

"We need to stay ahead of it." Kai glanced around, then dropped his voice further. "Harlan asked me for a third draft. Cleaner. Shorter. He wants it by end of day. I think he’s testing how far he can let this go without putting his own name on anything."

"And if someone talks?"

"We will find out whether the rules we wrote are strong enough to survive contact with gossip." Kai’s expression flickered, something almost serious underneath the usual mischief. "I’m not reckless, Ethan. Not with this, not with your name on the line. But the door is open and people are walking through it. We either manage the traffic or get trampled."

Ethan looked at him for a long moment. The soft face he used to wear every day now looked like it belonged to someone who made dangerous things sound reasonable.

"Fine," he said. "Third draft, but I read it before it goes to Harla and if another person opts in today, we pause until we do a full rules review tonight."

Kai’s grin returned. "Look at you. Setting conditions. Issuing demands. My body is having a very confusing reaction to competent authority. Try not to notice."

"I notice everything. That’s the problem."

A woman from Compliance named Sloane stopped at Kai’s cubicle, rested one hand on the low wall, and said, very quietly, "I heard there’s a working version of the wellness intervals. I’d like to be considered."

Kai didn’t look up from the screen immediately. When he did, his voice was pure professional calm.

"It’s voluntary. Rules are written. There’s a veto system and there’s someone who will shut it down if it stops being clean."

Sloane’s eyes flicked toward the elevators, where Ethan was visible in the leather jacket like a dark rumor. "The one who watches."

"The one who watches," Kai confirmed. "Still interested?"

She held his gaze. "Tonight, tell me where."

Kai studied her for a second longer, then nodded once. "Stairwell. 7:15. If you change your mind, don’t come."

Sloane walked away.

Kai texted Ethan thirty seconds later.

Ethan (Kai): third party just opted in. Compliance. name’s Sloane. 7:15. your move, brakes.

The reply was almost immediate.

Kai (Ethan): we pause after this one. full review tonight, no more new names until we see how the floor reacts tomorrow.

Ethan (Kai): deal. try not to look so pleased with yourself. it’s becoming a branding issue.

Kai (Ethan): too late. the soft body likes being wanted. we’re both screwed.
