Chapter 315: 315: Signals To Act.
They watched Lord Ash walk ahead before following behind him.
"So, have you reconciled with your dear daughter? Have you spoken with her at least?" Lord Vale asked.
Lord Ash scoffed. "She’s stubborn. Why should I be the one to go and speak with her? She won’t even listen to my basic instructions," he said firmly.
He spoke as though he didn’t care at all, but Lord Vale and Lord Zark knew he was the one who cared the most deep down.
"Are you sure about that? Coming from someone who spent the entire night pacing around the house just to make sure she was safe," Lord Vale pointed out.
"I’m just being cautious as a father," Lord Ash defended himself.
Lord Vale smiled. "If you say so, then..." He nodded before adding, "Besides, you know you were wrong to make such a comment back then."
Lord Ash said nothing as he continued walking, listening to his words.
"You know she has always dreamt of this. She’s worked hard to hone her skills, and now she finally has her very first patient. This is something special to her," Lord Vale continued. "You shouldn’t have been so careless with your words about her patient. Of course she’d feel offended."
Lord Ash remained silent, his expression unreadable as he listened.
"So, I think you should actually go and apologize to her. It would make her feel better," Lord Vale advised. "I understand that you’re worried about her and all, but you should be considerate of her feelings as well."
Lord Ash continued walking, thinking over his words. Although he didn’t respond, he could see some truth in what Lord Vale had said.
Lord Zark folded his arms and joined the conversation. "And why are you so worked up about that rabbit, anyway?"
At the question, Lord Ash paused. He stood still, staring into thin air for a moment before resuming his walk.
Lord Zark continued, "I understand that you might be worried, but... it feels like there’s more to this than you’re letting us know."
"It’s as if you’re not just worried about her being around a stranger. You seem particularly wary of that rabbit."
Lord Ash sighed. "Whatever you think."
He continued walking, leaving the two to follow behind him.
"Is there something we don’t know yet?" Lord Vale pressed. "Something about the rabbit you think we should know? It’s almost as if you know him personally."
At that, Lord Ash stopped and turned to stare at them.
Lord Vale folded his arms. "You rarely let your emotions get the better of you like this. Even in the middle of danger, you’re always calm and playfully cunning. You’re not the type to wear your emotions on your sleeve."
Lord Zark nodded in agreement. "Exactly. The fact that you’re letting this situation get to you is unusual. It makes me think there’s something specific about this whole thing that’s bothering you."
"Should we be worried?" Lord Vale asked, pressing him further.
Lord Ash stared at them. He opened his mouth as though he wanted to say something, but closed it almost immediately and shook his head.
"We have work to do," he said before turning and walking away.
"..."
Lord Vale and Lord Zark stood there, speechless, watching him leave.
"He really is tight-lipped this time around," Lord Vale remarked. "Getting anything out of him might be difficult."
Lord Zark folded his arms and nodded. "Hmm, pretty much. At least I can tell that much."
---
That night, they had dinner outside.
The beastmen sat on logs around several campfires, enjoying roasted meat and bowls of soup. Groups had gathered around the different fires, chatting and laughing as they ate beneath the beautiful night sky and the glow of the full moon.
Ayra sat with her children and mates, while Rai and Kan joined their group. They were enjoying the roasted meat that Nyx and Commander Lynn had been preparing and distributing to everyone.
"I didn’t know Brother Lynn was already this good at roasting meat. Oh, thank the Beast God!" Rai exclaimed with a satisfied smile.
Commander Lynn cast him a cold glare, making everyone burst into laughter.
He then turned his attention to the twin cubs standing beside him. Both children clung to his leg, watching the meat he was roasting with eager eyes as they waited for their share.
"Want some?" Commander Lynn asked.
The twins nodded firmly.
He smiled. "Wait a little longer, then. I’ll get you the softest pieces."
The cubs nodded again, their faces lighting up with smiles.
Ayra smiled at the adorable scene as she sipped her soup. Her gaze soon shifted to Ally, who was carefully scooping some into a separate bowl.
"What are you doing with that? Taking it to your patient?" she asked with a smile.
Ally nodded happily. "Mmm! I’m going to feed him the soup. It’s good for his recovery, and it’ll be easy for him to swallow."
"Oh, is he awake now?" Rai inquired.
"He’s only partially awake, but at least I can feed him some soup. He hasn’t had anything substantial to eat, so he needs this much for now," Ally explained.
Everyone nodded in understanding.
Lord Ash, however, said nothing. He sat quietly, watching his daughter prepare the soup.
Beside him, Lord Zark and Lord Vale exchanged glances before looking pointedly in his direction. They were silently urging him to do something about the situation with his daughter.
Lord Ash met their eyes, wondering what they were up to. But the two continued signaling at him, gesturing for him to speak to Ally or even accompany her to deliver the soup. Surely, that would give them a chance to settle their differences.
Unfortunately, Lord Ash didn’t understand their signals at first.
He stared at them, wondering if the two were having some kind of seizure.
But after a while, he finally caught on.
Slowly, he turned his head towards Ally, who was preparing to leave with the bowl of soup in her hands.
He had something to say to his daughter.
And this time, he actually said it.
