Our Family Has Fallen
Chapter 1431 - 769: The Attack
Chapter 1431: Chapter 769: The Attack
Lance didn’t let the Honor Guard join this war because the army needed battles to select warriors more suitable for war and to reasonably place some soldiers who were not accustomed to the battlefield, allowing them to retire and ease the pressure.
At the same time, with the army fully deployed, the city’s guarding forces were left insufficient, requiring sufficient strength to defend, or else problems would easily arise.
However, Lance didn’t mind using those heroes to influence the battle situation; both Reynard and Balistan were in the army.
Before the war started, Dismas was sent to infiltrate the Baron’s territory to contact the spies lurking there, responsible for gathering intelligence and monitoring, then communicating with the outside through Laura’s falcons.
Obtaining the defense map, knowing the enemy army’s configuration and numbers, of course, the key Baron and those around him could not be overlooked.
So there was no surprise when the Baron saw his disheveled son being brought up, feeling as if his whole world was about to collapse.
How is this possible? Only three people knew about this, it’s impossible...
But having some wits, in his chaotic mind, the first reaction was not madness but shouting at his son.
"So what if you’ve captured him, only I know where those things are! If you dare touch us, you’ll never find them."
Without a doubt, this was to remind his son that as long as he insisted he didn’t know, with those things, they wouldn’t dare hurt them.
"Your butler has already told us, including where your other family members are, and he led us to your secret passage exit."
Lance threw out a line that plunged the Baron into despair, how could it be... the traitor turned out to be the butler?
That an official betrayed him wasn’t surprising, but that the butler betrayed him was simply unfathomable, without any reason.
"The butler is already dead, I saw it with my own eyes, I don’t know where those things are."
The heir seemed to realize something and shouted, although pampered, he hasn’t completely lost his wits despite being trained as an heir.
Though frightened after being captured, they genuinely hadn’t interrogated him; he understood he must grasp the lifeline his father handed him.
But their struggles seemed so ridiculous to others...
Lance felt they misunderstood something, the matters concerning the estate or the secret passage were not as the Baron thought, betrayed by the butler.
But because of the Baron’s actions these past few days, whether asset transfer or sending away family members, all were under surveillance.
By keeping an eye on that butler, the hidden treasures could be found through him, and the family members, of course, including the secret passage location.
However, Lance had no intention of explaining.
"I don’t need that information from you; today’s reason for calling you two over is to inform you of the judgment results."
With that, Lance flipped through a stack of documents on the table and patted them, "The things you’ve committed are quite numerous, just in this war alone, forcibly conscripting supplies, the majority of donations were embezzled by you; and indulging those so-called soldiers to rape and loot..."
Lance easily enumerated a heap of crimes, simultaneously exposing the Baron’s despicability.
This guy surprisingly took this opportunity to amass wealth, harshly levying a war tax, collected enough to last fifty years, ridiculously to the extent that even the land was cleaned out, no wonder he’s so readily gave up.
You can only say, under this Baron, the big smart guy leading these brats, it would be unreasonable not to lose.
"Finally intending to burn down the entire town, do you know how many people would die? Since they are all sentenced to death, you also can’t escape."
"Do you think you’re any better, you Dictator, it’s all your invasion..."
"However, Hamlet’s laws emphasize the principal and accomplice relationship among criminals, harsh punishment for the principal offenders, but the unknowing accomplices might not face the death penalty..."
The Baron was still trying to mock, but upon hearing Lance’s latter words, he shut up immediately, sensing a lifeline.
Yet Lance instead stopped and stared at him, questioning: "What did you just say?"
"I said... it’s all my fault, the others didn’t know about these things." The Baron confessed, seemingly trying to take all the blame upon himself, pleading for his family’s safety.
Unlike the stammering Baron, a bored-to-the-point-of-drowsiness Boudica suddenly became spirited and urged.
"Boss, he’s insulting you! Kill him!"
This obviously had nothing to do with the heir, but hearing it, his face turned deathly pale.
Lance wasn’t angered by Boudica’s urging.
"You should be thankful for two things, firstly, Hamlet’s laws cannot be changed by the likes of you wastrels, secondly, your son is indeed useless, apart from bullying and harassing, he actually can’t accomplish anything."
But if Lance strictly adhered to rules, he wouldn’t be sitting here, those rules were set by him.
"However, you insulted me, and your son’s multiple cases are to be weighed; though none extremely heinous, Hamlet values accumulation, piling one by one, categorized as egregious offenses is still a capital crime."
Lance smiled, with such a thick stack of charges, if charge A doesn’t convict you, then charge B will, their fate was already sealed the moment they were captured.
The influence of the nobility must be completely eradicated here, and nothing accomplishes that better than physical elimination.
For the two prisoners, their outlooks were like a roller coaster, up and down, fortunately, in the end, their spirits were crushed.
