Chapter 486: Astonishing! The World's Largest Flower!
All around Ning Fei, the people of the Mentawai tribe fell to their knees.
They murmured a few words as if in prayer. Then, the Grand Shaman slowly stood back up, and the rest of the tribe followed suit.
Ning Fei stepped forward and exchanged a few words with the Grand Shaman in the local dialect, finally understanding the reason.
Seeing Ning Fei speak the local language, the viewers were dumbfounded.
"Holy shit! He even knows the language of primitive tribes?"
"The tribe's language is the same as the local city's dialect. It's not some special language."
"That's still incredibly impressive."
By this time, Ning Fei and the Grand Shaman had finished their conversation.
He offered a helpless smile and explained to the viewers in the live stream, "So it's because of Xiao Feng!"
"Xiao Feng is a special kind of Hibiscus Bird. With those three unique tail feathers, he looks like a miniature Phoenix.""In the Mentawai tribe, the Phoenix is the supreme deity, which is why they knelt and worshipped Xiao Feng."
"Thanks to Xiao Feng, the Grand Shaman has promised to treat us as honored guests."
"I guess I'm riding on Xiao Feng's coattails."
Hearing Ning Fei's explanation, the viewers finally saw the light.
"So they were worshipping Xiao Feng!"
"This canary really brings glory to Temple Master Ning!"
"Haha, treated like a god all because of a bird!"
Ning Fei maintained a calm expression, but inwardly, he was quite shocked.
The Grand Shaman had just mentioned sensing a special, mystical power from Xiao Feng.
And Little Fox as well—she too carried a mysterious energy.
The Grand Shaman of this primitive tribe was someone who had spent his entire life in ascetic cultivation, striving to become one with heaven and earth.
They possessed an exceptionally keen perception for anything containing Spiritual Energy.
This was what was known as being "spiritually attuned."
Xiao Feng had hatched from an egg obtained through the System's lottery, so he truly hailed from an unknown place.
But why did the Grand Shaman claim Little Fox shared this trait?
Ning Fei looked down at Little Fox in his arms. She was as cute and soft as ever, not looking like she possessed any special power at all.
Xiao Feng, meanwhile, maintained his usual aloof demeanor, perching on Ning Fei's shoulder and preening his feathers.
Afterward, the Mentawai people escorted Ning Fei to the area behind the Grand Shaman's dwelling. There stood another house in a fairly nice environment, fully stocked with daily necessities.
Under the fervent gazes of the surrounding tribespeople, Ning Fei rested for a short while before deciding to head outside to take in the scenery.
Being treated like a god was not as relaxing as one might think.
Since it was too dangerous outside, Ning Fei only took Little Dog and Little Falcon with him.
The tribe deeply respected nature and life, so leaving Little Fox and the others in the house was perfectly safe.
With a dog and a hawk in tow, Ning Fei looked every bit the seasoned traveler.
Outside lay the familiar environment of the Tropical Rainforest.
However, the plant life in this section of the rainforest was much more unique.
"Ah, this smell. That has to be it," Ning Fei said with a sudden smile as he wove his way through the forest.
"Woof, woof, woof!"
Little Dog barked along, his voice full of displeasure.
A dog's nose was far more sensitive, so the stench Little Dog smelled was several times stronger than what Ning Fei perceived.
"Smell? What smell?"
The viewers asked out of curiosity.
"A foul, rotting stench. The kind of smell that makes you feel thoroughly nauseated," Ning Fei said, shaking his head.
The viewers finally understood.
"Hahaha, no wonder Little Dog is acting like that."
"Where is this stench coming from?"
"A mysterious, foul odor in the wild? Could there be a zombie?"
Ning Fei took a few more steps forward. Before long, the source of the stench appeared right in front of him.
In the live stream's camera frame, a massive flower with red, spotted patterns came into view. Its diameter spanned over a meter, making it look like a giant bathtub.
"Holy crap! What a huge flower!"
"Is that really a flower? It's way too big!"
"A man-eating plant?"
"This is a Rafflesia, practically the largest flower in the world. It's known as the 'King of Flowers,'" Ning Fei explained to the viewers, having activated his Encyclopedia skill.
"The Rafflesia only grows in this region of Sumatra. It is a saprophytic plant that emits a foul odor to attract insects, preying on them to sustain its growth."
"It's quite a bizarre lifeform."
"But the stench is truly unbearable."
Ning Fei looked at the massive flower, shook his head, and immediately walked straight past it.
Little Dog ran ahead of Ning Fei, likely unable to stand the smell any longer either.
The viewers, on the other hand, found it fascinating.
"The biggest flower in the world! I've broadened my horizons again!"
"Following Temple Master Ning means learning a new piece of trivia every day!"
"I really want to know what exactly this flower smells like!"
"It's a carrion plant, what else could it smell like?"
"Probably similar to a can of surströmming!"
While everyone remained fixated on the stench, Ning Fei had already left the Rafflesia behind and continued forward to admire the scenery.
"Swish!"
Right at that moment, the sharp whistle of an arrow echoed from ahead.
"Someone is hunting!"
Hearing the noise, Ning Fei's curiosity was piqued.
He immediately looked in the direction of the sound.
Behind a large tree, he spotted two teenage boys from the Mentawai tribe. Their bodies were covered in linear tattoos, and they were currently using bows and arrows to hunt a warthog.
The two boys looked no older than twelve or thirteen. They were shirtless, and while their bodies appeared lean and frail, they moved with sharp agility.
Seeing this scene, the viewers erupted in another wave of amazement.
"Damn, those two kids are hunting? How old are they?!"
"At that age, they should just be starting middle school!"
"Good lord, we're still sitting in classrooms while they're already out hunting!"
"These kids are fierce. I'm thirty years old, and I wouldn't dare grab a bow and run into the forest to hunt a warthog."
A warthog was a type of wild boar. The biggest difference between them and ordinary wild boars was that their tusks were significantly larger and they were far more ferocious.
"They're hunting an adult warthog!"
"These two have quite the nerve. Adult warthogs are not to be trifled with," Ning Fei commented.
The two children's arrows struck the warthog simultaneously, but the beast clearly wasn't going down without a fight.
In the next instant, it charged straight at the two boys.
"Holy shit! That's terrifying!"
The viewers hadn't expected the warthog to be so fiercely resilient. Despite taking two arrows, it acted as if it were perfectly fine and mounted a frenzied counterattack.
The two boys were smart, immediately scrambling up a nearby tree.
"Bang! Bang!"
The warthog reached the base of the tree and began ramming the trunk madly!
The two boys clung tightly to the branches above. Surprisingly, there wasn't a trace of panic on their faces.
"The Mentawai people grow up in this primitive environment. They are natural-born hunters."
"They'll have their own way of handling this."
The tree trunk swayed violently, but at the same time, the warthog was continuously losing blood.
This was the dynamic between hunter and prey; every hunt was a high-stakes gamble between the two sides.
The warthog knew its injuries were fatal, so it sought bloody vengeance before taking its last breath. Furthermore, once this creature flew into a rage, it felt no pain and became incredibly aggressive.
The two boys also knew that all they had to do was hold on.
The scene was incredibly thrilling.
Ning Fei hesitated, wondering if he should intervene.
Generally speaking, stepping in while someone else was hunting was easily misinterpreted as trying to steal their kill. Ning Fei was well aware of this unwritten rule.
After ramming the trunk for a while, the warthog lost too much blood and gradually began to slow down.
Seeing this, the two boys fired another arrow into it.
Then, they dropped down from the tree. After confirming the beast was dead, each hoisted one side of the carcass onto their shoulders and headed back toward the tribe just like that.
Their frames were small and slender, while the warthog looked to weigh nearly one to two hundred jin, yet the two kids didn't seem to struggle in the slightest.
On their way back, they spotted Ning Fei. Startled, they almost drew their arrows to shoot him, but managed to hold themselves back.
Ning Fei didn't say anything either.
The viewers, however, exploded in chatter.
"These kids are way too strong!"
"Other people's 12-year-olds: Hunting wild boars and carrying them home. My 12-year-old self: Mom, where did my socks go?"
"Haha, I'd still prefer a life where my biggest problem is losing my socks."
"Yeah, but you still have to admire them."
Waiting until the two children were far away, Ning Fei nodded and said, "This is what life in a primitive tribe is like. Hunting is a crucial part of it."
Right at that moment, the bushes in front of him suddenly rustled violently.
Then, two even larger warthogs charged out of the undergrowth, glaring fiercely at Ning Fei.
"I forgot to mention, warthogs are highly social creatures, and they tend to stick together."
"And the look in these two warthogs' eyes doesn't seem quite right!" Ning Fei said slowly upon seeing the beasts.
"It looks like these two want to avenge their companion."
"I wonder if they'll understand if I tell them they've got the wrong guy."
