Peerless Medical Emperor
Chapter 279: The Assassins Aren’t Tough
"Don’t think you’re so great just because you’re the Head of the War God! Our boss said he wants you dead today! You’re a dead man!" the scar-faced man threatened.
"Stop wasting time. Get lost!" Chen Qingdi said impatiently. "I have no interest in killing nobodies! If you know what’s good for you, scram!"
The man in glasses chuckled sinisterly. "You think we want to fight you to the death? We’re just here to claim your life! Your time is up! Now, die!"
Before the words were even out of his mouth, Chen Qingdi struck. He kicked the scar-faced man’s wrist, sending the pistol flying, then followed up with another kick that knocked him unconscious.
Chen Qingdi swiftly defeated the others as well.
The man in glasses swallowed hard. "You... you’re really the Head of the War God?"
"Is the Head of the War God a title you’re worthy of uttering?" Chen Qingdi mocked. "Get lost! I don’t want to see you again!"
The man in glasses and his cronies scrambled away. Chen Qingdi watched them go and shook his head. "These low-level thugs are getting more useless by the day!"
He glanced at the downed thugs, then his eyes landed on the man in glasses. "I’ll ask you this," he said coolly. "Who sent you? If you won’t tell me the truth, I’ll just kill you."
The man in glasses trembled in fear. Chen Qingdi’s tone was level, but the man could feel the murderous intent radiating from him.
"It... it was people from Medical God Island. They sent us."
"Medical God Island?" Chen Qingdi paused. "What’s your connection to Medical God Island?"
"We... we just took money from Medical God Island and came here."
A thought struck Chen Qingdi. He looked at the man in glasses and said coolly, "Tell me everything you know."
"It... it was Sect Leader Wu Qingsong from Medical God Island. He gave us money to assassinate you."
Chen Qingdi’s heart sank. He stared at the man. ’Wu Qingsong... Wu Qingsong...’ he thought.
He suddenly thought of someone: his martial uncle, Wu Qingsong.
Wu Qingsong was one of the main Sect Leaders of Medical God Island, and also his martial uncle.
He had always respected this martial uncle. He never imagined the man would send assassins after him. ’Why? What is going on?’
He looked at the man in glasses and stated coolly, "Do you know who Wu Qingsong is? He’s my martial uncle."
The man in glasses stared at Chen Qingdi in surprise. He hadn’t known about this.
"Th-this... we didn’t know..."
Chen Qingdi took a deep breath. He knew this matter was far beyond what he had imagined. "Tell me everything you know," he said flatly.
"It... it was Sect Leader Wu Qingsong who found us. He said you were his enemy and told us to get rid of you."
A pang of agony shot through Chen Qingdi’s heart. He never, ever thought his martial uncle would do this to him.
He looked at the man in glasses and said coolly, "Get rid of me? All for that Wu Tian?"
"What? Who’s Wu Tian?" the man in glasses asked, looking at Chen Qingdi with surprise.
"It seems you don’t know anything," Chen Qingdi said coolly. "Then you don’t need to know anything more."
With that, he struck the man’s head with his palm.
The man in glasses collapsed without a sound.
Then the second thug, and so on, until all of them were dead. Only then did Chen Qingdi let out a long breath.
His mind was in turmoil. He never, ever imagined his martial uncle would treat him this way. ’What did I do wrong? For him to do this to me?’
Chen Qingdi’s heart was a chaotic mess, his thoughts a tangled web. He took a deep breath, knowing this matter was far beyond what he had imagined.
Leaves danced on the breeze in the city. Chen Qingdi stood in front of a corner café, gripping his phone, his eyes filled with confusion and rage. He had just survived a life-or-death struggle, taking out a group of assassins lying in ambush. There was no doubt they had come for him.
"Martial Uncle, why would you do this?" Chen Qingdi asked in a low voice, his tone laced with deep pain and confusion. On the other end of the line was Wu Tian, his martial uncle, the man he had always regarded as family, who now felt like a stranger.
"Ah, Cyan Emperor, you’ve misunderstood. How could I possibly do something like that?" Wu Tian’s voice sounded aggrieved over the phone as he hastily explained, "I think of you as my own nephew. How could you suspect me?"
Chen Qingdi was silent for a moment, anger surging through him like a tidal wave.
He was well aware of Wu Tian’s methods and abilities; framing him would be child’s play. "You can survive a calamity from Heaven, but you can’t escape the consequences of your own actions." He sighed deeply. "Martial Uncle, you just wait."
After hanging up, Chen Qingdi said to Liu beside him, "Back to Mingyue Group." Liu, the taxi driver who had just been through a life-and-death situation with him, was now his assistant and his most trusted friend. He was a man of few words, but his eyes were filled with determination and loyalty.
Returning to Mingyue Group with all possible speed, Chen Qingdi’s heart was filled with resolve. He needed to find the truth, no matter how cruel it might be. He knew that in the vast ocean of this city, he could only rely on himself for protection.
The Mingyue Group building glittered in the sunlight like a giant pearl. Chen Qingdi walked briskly into the building with Liu, his heart pounding like a war drum, a constant reminder of the challenge ahead.
"Cyan Emperor, you’re back," a gentle voice said in the lobby. Lin Meng, a janitor at Mingyue Group, walked toward him.
"Yes, Mrs. Lin." Chen Qingdi nodded. "I’m back. You can get back to your work."
Chen Qingdi returned to Mingyue Group, his expression terrifyingly grim. In his office, he signaled for his three confidants—Chen Yuan, Dong Kui, and Miao Lang—to enter.
"Cyan Emperor, did you learn anything on your trip back?" Chen Yuan spoke first, a worried look on his face.
Chen Qingdi shook his head and gave a bitter smile. "I was just planning to pay respects to my master, but I ended up getting ambushed."
"What? An assassination attempt?" Dong Kui and Miao Lang asked in unison.
Chen Qingdi nodded, then told them that before the assassin died, he had admitted to being sent by his martial uncle, Wu Tian.
"That Wu Tian is despicable! We have to take him out!" Chen Yuan said furiously.
"I disagree," Miao Lang said, shaking his head. "We can’t act rashly. It’s better to investigate first."
"You’re always so cautious," Dong Kui said with a frown. "If we don’t make a move, Wu Tian might strike first to gain the upper hand."
"I know," Miao Lang sighed. "But we can’t let our emotions control us. We have to use our heads to solve this problem."
