Pokémon: My Online Friend Is Cynthia
Chapter 26: First Arrival at Rowan Laboratory
Chapter 26: Chapter 26: First Arrival at Rowan Laboratory
Julian raised an eyebrow.
Since Professor Rowan wanted him there in person, then he would go.
"No problem, Professor. But I need two days to settle things at home. After that, I’ll take the fastest coach to Sandgem Town."
Professor Rowan nodded.
"There’s no rush. Handle your family matters first."
After hanging up, Julian still felt that Professor Rowan’s expression had been a little strange when he heard that Julian had been introduced by KingGarchomp.
It was almost as if they were not that familiar.
From his friend’s tone, they should have been old acquaintances.
Could they have contacted Professor Rowan specially to help him, then lied that they were familiar and that the matter was settled with a casual phone call?
Forget it.
No point thinking about it now.
Julian planned to ask Professor Rowan indirectly once he reached the laboratory.
First, he had to go home and make the specialities he had promised his friend.
Last time, he had not known their tastes, so he prepared various snacks, pastries, smoked dried goods, and massage oils for Pokémon.
With the kind of relationship he had with his online friend, where they spoke directly about everything, since KingGarchomp had not complained, then every item he prepared must have suited their tastes.
In that case, there was no need to change the categories.
This time, he would just prepare more.
They would be vacuum-sealed anyway. Even pastries and snacks could have their shelf life extended to one month, and if frozen, they could last half a year.
But freezing would affect the texture, so it would be best to finish them within a month, or even half a month.
While Julian was on his way home, the petty man preparing to report Veilstone Gym also went to challenge it again, hoping to collect evidence that the Gym had privately changed its Leader.
As soon as he entered, however, the Gym Leader accepting challenges had become the middle-aged martial artist registered on the Sinnoh League’s official website.
The sky collapsed.
How was he supposed to collect evidence now?
With his mind not on the battle at all, Aiden was casually defeated by Darius.
After leaving Veilstone Gym, his expression turned vicious.
He refused to believe he could not find a weakness in Veilstone Gym.
Halfway home, Julian ran into him.
He frowned slightly, but still stepped forward with a smile to greet him.
"Aiden, did you come to challenge Veilstone Gym again?"
Aiden forced out a smile.
"Yes. I didn’t expect the Gym Leader to be someone different today. It caught me off guard."
Julian smiled.
"Veilstone Gym is jointly managed by my father and me. Soon, though, I’ll be managing it alone. You’re welcome to challenge us again then."
Aiden became uncertain.
Had his little movements been discovered?
"I still have something to do, so I’ll be leaving first."
Watching his back, Julian narrowed his eyes.
A sinister petty man like this had to be dealt with in one blow to prevent future trouble.
Julian returned to the Gym and told Maylene and Darius the good news that Jangmo-o had evolved.
Both of them were excited.
Maylene jumped up directly.
"Great!"
Darius’s eyes widened.
"Then once you submit the application, does that mean I can go back to the Game Corner and focus on playing games?"
Julian shook his head.
"Before the League approval comes through, you have to stay in the Gym."
After approval, Julian would receive a period of internship.
During that time, all of Veilstone Gym’s challenges could be handed to him.
Through the internship period, applicants could learn whether they had the potential to become Gym Leaders, and whether they could adapt to the work and life of running a Gym.
If they could, then the assessment would come next.
It was a two-way process.
The League chose suitable Gym Leaders.
Gym Leaders chose suitable work.
Julian spent two days buying speciality ingredients from Veilstone City and turning them into pastries, snacks, and dried goods.
He labelled them according to storage time, advising which should be eaten first.
While he made them, Maylene stole more than a few bites from the side. Biscuits, sweets, pastries — she ate happily.
When the siblings went to the post office, Julian pushed a trolley, while Maylene was still eating a box of freshly macaroons.
"So good. Next time Cassia comes, you can make some for her to take home. Sweet pastries like this are much better than the incense you gave her last time, right?"
Incense had a refined feeling, was small in size, and was convenient to carry away.
He could hardly pack an entire huge box and make Cassia bring it home, could he?
At the post office, the courier greeted Julian warmly.
"Julian, sending things to your friend again?"
"Still Lily of the Valley Island. Same address as last time. There’s a bit more this time."
Looking at the three large boxes on the trolley, the courier was surprised.
"Julian, you really went all out."
He waved it off.
"I made it all myself. It’s not worth much."
"Bring it over for weighing."
The three boxes weighed more than two hundred pounds combined.
The delivery fee alone cost Julian five thousand League dollars.
After returning home, Julian began packing his own luggage.
"Maylene, train Riolu properly and keep an eye on Father. Don’t let him spend all day at the Game Corner. I’ll bring you a present when I come back."
"Yes, sir. Mission guaranteed!"
As a result, the moment Julian boarded the coach and watched it head towards Sandgem Town, Darius wanted to rush straight to the Game Corner.
"Dad, where do you think you’re going?"
Darius chuckled.
"Maylene, you’re ten now. You’re a qualified Trainer. How about you take charge of Veilstone Gym for the next few days?"
"Prove your strength and let your father relax a little too."
Being limited to set hours at the Game Corner every day was painful.
He had to go home just when he was getting into the flow.
After barely five days, Darius was already losing patience.
Now that Julian had submitted the Gym Leader application, he found it even harder to endure.
Maylene chuckled.
Veilstone Gym Leader Maylene!
That sounded pretty good.
"Fine. Leave it to me!"
Julian would never have expected his Private Maylene to be persuaded into betraying him so easily.
He slept on the coach, and when he woke, they had already arrived at Sandgem Town.
After getting off, he went straight to Rowan Laboratory.
When he entered the front doors, he saw two researchers with serious expressions discussing something while looking at documents.
"Hello. I’m Julian Veyne. I’m here to record Primeape’s data."
Only after hearing his voice did they notice someone had arrived.
Their expressions suddenly relaxed.
"We’ll take you to see the Professor."
They went further inside.
Professor Rowan was sternly scolding a researcher, seemingly because of a data-entry error.
"Professor, the Julian Veyne you were waiting for has arrived."
Seeing Julian, Professor Rowan finally revealed a faint smile.
"That’s enough for now. Take Julian to arrange a room for him, then conduct Primeape’s first data measurement."
The three researchers stood at attention with serious expressions.
"Yes, Professor!"
Professor Rowan returned to his office to continue working, and only then did the three finally let out a breath.
"Is Professor Rowan always like this?"
The three nodded.
"The Professor is extremely serious about research and doesn’t tolerate even the slightest error. Just now, I accidentally recorded Treecko’s data in Torchic’s table."
"A basic mistake like that naturally made the Professor furious."
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"Rowan Laboratory has Hoenn starter Pokémon too?"
