Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Defeating Infernape

The three researchers were all very proud.

"Getting a full set of Hoenn starter Pokémon in Sinnoh is extremely difficult. It’s all thanks to Professor Rowan’s connections."

Julian nodded.

It was just like Sinnoh’s own starter Pokémon. There were not necessarily enough Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup to distribute among all new Trainers in the region.

Hoenn was naturally the same.

Being able to snatch a full set from another region’s supply really did prove how wide Professor Rowan’s network was.

"Can I take a look at Hoenn’s starter Pokémon?"

"Put your luggage down first. Professor Rowan told us you’d be coming to assist with research, so your room has already been prepared."

Rowan Laboratory was large, and the room prepared for Julian was large as well.

The environment was clean, though there was only a single bed and a desk inside.

"The conditions are rather simple. Please forgive that."

Julian waved it off.

"I came here to make Primeape stronger. Since this is for training, there’s no need to care about the conditions."

After putting his things down, Julian followed the three researchers to the room where Torchic, Treecko, and Mudkip were being kept.

Seeing the Hoenn starters with his own eyes, Julian found it difficult to describe what he felt.

It was a kind of childhood nostalgia.

"Mr Veyne, which of these three Pokémon do you like the most?"

Julian waved a hand.

"Just call me Julian."

Although Ash’s Sceptile was very cool...

Sorry, Sceptile

I choose Blaziken

"Torchic, I suppose. Blaziken doesn’t only look extremely cool, it also has astonishing jumping ability and a gorgeous Blaze Kick."

"This is just my personal preference. Not because I’m the prospective Leader of a Fighting Gym."

Professor Rowan also entered the room.

"I’ve already had Yuzo prepare the equipment. We can begin measuring Primeape’s data."

"Julian, come with me. The three of you, measure Torchic, Treecko, and Mudkip’s data again. This time, I don’t want to see any mistakes."

The test prop Professor Rowan prepared was a rubber dummy Pokémon with instruments installed inside.

Julian released Primeape.

"Primeape, use Mega Punch on the prop in front of you."

Faced with this kind of opponent, Primeape clearly could not muster even the slightest anger.

But since Julian had instructed it, Primeape was willing to obey for now.

It leapt up and punched the rubber dummy hard.

Professor Rowan looked at the data fed back to the computer and frowned slightly.

"This is very normal Primeape data. It hasn’t shown the special characteristics you mentioned."

Julian nodded.

"Professor, perhaps Primeape needs a real opponent. Why don’t we switch to somewhere with more space and let Primeape battle Hakamo-o?"

Professor Rowan nodded.

"Yuzo, move the equipment to the backyard battlefield. We’ll measure again there."

Once they arrived in the backyard, Julian released Hakamo-o as well.

Primeape’s eyes changed instantly.

Anger began to burn.

When Professor Rowan saw the numbers on the machine change, surprise appeared in his eyes.

"Primeape, Karate Chop!"

"Hakamo-o, Brick Break!"

After the two sides clashed, Primeape’s values rose again.

Delight appeared in Professor Rowan’s eyes.

Every Primeape had the trait of increasing its own ability as its anger rose.

But this was the first time Professor Rowan had seen a Primeape improve this quickly.

They had only exchanged one move, yet Primeape’s anger had risen so much.

Interesting.

"Hakamo-o, use Dragon Dance, then Dragon Claw!"

"Primeape, Mega Punch!"

After evolving, Hakamo-o could compress the use of Dragon Dance into less than one second.

Before Primeape’s Mega Punch arrived, he had enough time to complete Dragon Dance and then use Dragon Claw.

Fist and claw collided.

Primeape was forced back, and its anger rose once more.

"Hakamo-o, Dragon Dance, then Iron Head!"

"Primeape, Headbutt!"

Primeape was suppressed by Hakamo-o again, making Julian frown slightly.

No

This is not the level Primeape should have

Its anger...

It was rising more slowly than before it was caught.

After several exchanges, a layer of red aura finally appeared around Primeape’s body.

"Now, Primeape! Pour your anger into Mega Punch!"

Professor Rowan watched in surprise as Primeape’s Mega Punch underwent some subtle, almost miraculous change.

It actually sent Hakamo-o flying, despite Hakamo-o having used Dragon Dance four times and Bulk Up once.

Julian frowned.

"Professor, it might be because Primeape and Hakamo-o are teammates now. Primeape’s anger doesn’t have that extreme feeling it had before I caught it."

"I wonder if Rowan Laboratory has a suitable person and Pokémon who can battle Primeape and me, and push Primeape’s anger to its limit."

Looking at the instrument, which showed Primeape’s numbers had risen to nearly four times their starting point, Professor Rowan asked in surprise, "You mean... this still isn’t Primeape’s limit?"

For an ordinary Primeape, using rage to double its strength was already enough to call it excellent.

Any angrier, and it might burst a blood vessel.

But Julian’s Primeape had raised its strength nearly fourfold through anger, and that still was not its limit.

Professor Rowan was curious.

Where exactly was this Primeape’s upper limit?

"Yuzo, use the laboratory’s Infernape to battle Primeape."

"Yes!"

"Primeape, Hakamo-o, stop."

After Julian called a halt, Primeape’s anger rapidly calmed.

Professor Rowan nodded repeatedly.

This was indeed a rare talent.

Many Primeape could get angry, but could not stop.

Even if it did not evolve, relying on this talent with anger alone, Primeape could become a powerful Pokémon.

Yuzo soon returned with a powerful-looking Infernape.

The moment Primeape saw Infernape, its eyes lit up.

Before the battle even began, Primeape’s anger had already started overflowing.

Julian nodded.

Yes

This is the feeling!

But could anger really rise just from looking at an opponent?

Seeing the data fluctuate, Professor Rowan’s eyes filled with surprise.

He had seen many Pokémon over the years, but this...

He truly had not seen before.

Professor Rowan nodded.

"Begin."

"Infernape, Fire Punch!"

"Primeape, Brick Break!"

The Infernape from Rowan Laboratory was naturally first-rate.

The result of the collision was that Primeape rolled several times across the ground, just like Jangmo-o once had.

With a sharp surge, red aura wrapped around Primeape’s body.

"Dynamic Punch!"

"Flare Blitz!"

The two sides remained deadlocked for three or four seconds before Primeape was pushed back by the cold-eyed Infernape.

As the tyrant of Rowan Laboratory’s backyard, Infernape had its pride.

A mere Primeape...

Primeape slowly climbed up from the ground.

A soaring red aura rose from its body.

"Key, key!"

Interesting

Very interesting

This was the first time Primeape had met an opponent as strong as Infernape.

Primeape’s anger reached an unprecedented peak.

"Primeape!"

"Mega! Punch!"

"Infernape, Flare Blitz!"

Infernape charged forward.

Primeape suddenly swung its right fist.

The flames surrounding Infernape stopped abruptly.

Yuzo’s eyes widened.

Infernape had actually been defeated.

Professor Rowan was equally shocked.

That Mega Punch just now...

There was an additional flavour of anger in it.

Primeape’s body had undergone a subtle change.

But that change was not enough.

If that change could be expanded, perhaps Primeape really could evolve.
