Pokémon: My Online Friend Is Cynthia
Chapter 28: Maybe This Is Talent
Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Maybe This Is Talent
Primeape never used Rage, the move that raised Attack after being hit.
Because rage was its instinct.
A mere Infernape could not be its opponent under that endless surge of anger.
Infernape was indeed strong, but after living comfortably in Rowan Laboratory, it had long since lost its old fighting spirit.
Infernape climbed up from the ground, and its eyes became heated.
This defeat had helped it recover a portion of that former fighting spirit.
Professor Rowan spoke.
"All right. Yuzo, take Infernape away. Tomorrow, Infernape, you’ll battle Primeape again. For today, recover first."
Infernape nodded.
It truly needed some time for recovery training.
Today, it had been careless.
It had not dodged.
Tomorrow
Tomorrow, it would definitely use Flare Blitz to defeat Primeape.
After Infernape left, Professor Rowan handed the printed data report to Julian.
"According to the instrument analysis, Primeape’s final Mega Punch did indeed affect its body."
"But if we want to trigger evolution, even throwing that punch a hundred times wouldn’t be enough. Look here."
Professor Rowan pointed to a downward curve in the report.
"After that punch, over ninety percent of the change in Primeape’s body returned to its original state. This means that anger combined with Mega Punch is not the Rage Fist needed to push Primeape’s evolution."
Julian nodded.
"I realised that Primeape’s current moves aren’t enough to push its evolution, which is why I’m searching for the true Rage Fist."
Professor Rowan read through the report from beginning to end again.
"To prevent anything happening to Primeape, I’ll give you some books and materials on Primeape training and therapy."
"Although your Primeape is exceptionally talented, targeted care will never hurt it."
Julian’s face lit with surprise.
"Thank you, Professor."
Over the years, Julian had bought many books related to Fighting-type Pokémon and had summarised his own method for training them.
If he could read Professor Rowan’s collection, he believed his raising methods would improve greatly.
Yuzo returned as well.
"Professor, I’ll take Julian there."
"Good. I’ll analyse this data again and see if I can find a breakthrough."
Rowan Laboratory had a dedicated library storage room.
It did not only hold the precious books Professor Rowan had collected over many years, but also backup copies of his research materials.
"This side contains the books the Professor has collected on Fighting-type Pokémon. During your stay, you can come here and read whenever you like."
Yuzo took out several research files.
"This is research on Mankey and Primeape evolution. It includes a lot of technical terms, so I don’t know whether you’ll be able to understand it."
"And this one is a massage method to prevent Primeape from sudden death due to violent rage. It requires stimulating quite a few specialised pressure points. I can’t understand it, anyway."
Pressure-point therapy.
Julian had specially studied information in this area before.
But neither Trainer forums nor the related books in libraries had detailed introductions to pressure-point techniques.
He had not expected Rowan Laboratory to have them.
Yuzo continued, "This method came from one of the Professor’s friends. That massage therapist can even treat Psyduck’s headaches through massage."
"I heard she even made a Psyduck evolve into Golduck through massage."
Julian opened the file and looked through it.
The massage methods were indeed highly specialised.
It carefully introduced more than a dozen pressure points located on Primeape’s head, the specific effects of each one, and what method should be used when massaging the corresponding point.
Julian nodded repeatedly as he read.
Yuzo looked at him in surprise.
"You can understand it?"
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"Of course. I’m planning to try it on Primeape now."
Yuzo’s eyes widened.
"You not only understood it after reading once, you learned it too?"
Julian directly released Primeape.
Primeape thought there was another new opponent.
He waved a hand.
"No opponent. I learned a new technique that can help improve your combat power, so I want you to try it."
Hearing that it could improve combat power, Primeape immediately stood obediently and allowed Julian to use the technique.
Julian placed both hands on Primeape’s head.
Like playing the piano, his fingers moved back and forth across Primeape’s scalp.
His fingers rotated, making Primeape feel its mind relax in a way it had never experienced before.
After releasing so much anger earlier, Primeape had actually felt somewhat tired.
But with Julian’s massage, that fatigue was now swept away.
Primeape felt full of energy.
It could fight two more Infernape without a problem.
Looking at Primeape excitedly bumping its fists together, Julian asked Yuzo, "Since Rowan Laboratory has Infernape, it should also have Empoleon and Torterra, right?"
Yuzo looked surprised.
"You’re not thinking of having Primeape fight Empoleon and Torterra too, are you?"
Julian nodded.
"The data will be more useful if we test a few different opponents, won’t it?"
Yuzo also became somewhat excited.
"Fine. Let’s ask Professor Rowan. If he agrees, we’ll let Primeape battle them."
Research every day could be dull.
Who would not want a chance to command a couple of battles?
Professor Rowan agreed readily.
Since Primeape’s body had recovered through massage, and judging by the talent it had shown earlier, pushing its anger to the peak again should not affect its health.
"Yuzo, go bring Empoleon over."
Professor Rowan turned to Julian.
"Julian, this time, I hope Primeape can use Dynamic Punch, not Mega Punch."
Julian understood.
"Professor, you want to test the exact method of using Rage Fist by pairing anger with different punching moves?"
Professor Rowan nodded.
"That’s right. So during the coming period, I hope Primeape can master every punching move it is capable of learning."
Unsurprisingly, after learning what had happened to Infernape, the pampered Lord Empoleon took things seriously and tried to prove that it was stronger than Infernape.
Then Primeape knocked it out with three Dynamic Punches.
Each punch stronger than the last.
Professor Rowan was momentarily speechless.
"This... Primeape’s anger also grows when it hits others?"
Julian shrugged.
"Maybe this is talent."
After another massage and a few mouthfuls of sports drink to restore stamina, Primeape eagerly waved its fists, ready to continue fighting.
Unexpectedly, Torterra’s performance turned out to be the best of the three breeding males.
Perhaps this was the talent of turtles.
They might move slowly, but they kept crawling forward without slackening.
Primeape also admired Torterra.
Torterra’s Frenzy Plant made its eyes light up.
Professor Rowan was equally satisfied with Julian and Primeape’s performance.
"Julian, I’m currently conducting research on Hoenn starter Pokémon, and I need three Trainers to assist me. Would you be willing to participate?"
"If you participate in the research, you may choose one of the three Pokémon to become your own."
Julian nodded excitedly.
"Of course I’m willing."
Professor Rowan smiled faintly.
"Yuzo, take Julian to choose the Hoenn starter Pokémon he wants."
