Pokémon: My Online Friend Is Cynthia
Chapter 29: A Resourceful Grandmother
Chapter 29: Chapter 29: A Resourceful Grandmother
Julian and Yuzo returned to the research room.
The three researchers were miserably measuring data from Torchic, Treecko, and Mudkip as they used their moves.
When they learned that Yuzo had commanded Infernape, Empoleon, and Torterra against Primeape one after another, and lost every time, all three of them looked shocked.
"Julian and Primeape are that strong?"
Yuzo shrugged.
"They’ll probably battle Primeape again tomorrow. Each of you can try once and you’ll understand how strong it is."
The three of them immediately became excited and threw themselves into their work with renewed energy.
"Julian, have you decided which one you want?"
Julian answered without hesitation.
"Torchic."
The female researcher asked excitedly, "Is the Professor finally planning to assign them to Trainers for raising?"
Yuzo nodded.
"Julian is the first. The other two will probably also be given to Trainers the Professor is familiar with."
The two male researchers were excited too.
"Great. Doing experiments every day while also finding time to raise these three has been exhausting."
The female researcher raised her hand.
"Let’s make something good tonight to celebrate. What do you all want to eat?"
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"If you don’t mind, I consider myself decent at cooking. I can handle dinner."
The female researcher raised her hand again.
"I approve. I want omurice!"
Yuzo frowned.
"How can we let a guest cook?"
Julian waved it off.
"It’s fine. I’ll cook for everyone, and when I run into Pokémon questions, I can ask you all for advice without holding back."
The two male researchers clamped onto Yuzo from both sides.
"Julian, we’ll leave dinner to you. Ask us anything you want!"
The researchers who worked at Rowan Laboratory were all elites.
Building a good relationship with them was necessary.
Julian crouched in front of Torchic and rubbed its head.
"Hello, Torchic. From now on, I’ll be your Trainer."
Torchic jumped up excitedly.
"Torchic!"
It happily ran a circle around Julian.
Torchic liked this new Trainer very much.
He was far better than the four lifeless researchers.
Julian entered the kitchen and found plenty of ingredients in the fridge, enough for him to show his skills.
Smelling the aroma coming from the kitchen, the four researchers all took a deep breath.
"It’s been a long time since I smelled food at this hour."
...
At the dining table, Professor Rowan praised Julian’s choice.
"Torchic’s final evolution, Blaziken, has astonishing jumping ability. Its use of leg techniques is no worse than Hitmonlee’s. It will be a great help when you take over Veilstone Gym."
Julian nodded.
"Professor, what experiment is Torchic part of?"
The four researchers were immersed in the food, so only Professor Rowan and Julian were chatting.
Professor Rowan explained, "I’m researching regional differences in the evolution of the same Pokémon species across different regions. According to investigations, every region has a different energy field."
"Even the same species of Pokémon, when living in different regions, can show differences in the moves they master and the growth of their abilities."
"Because of that, Professor Birch, who studies environmental ecology, and I launched this joint project."
After dinner, Professor Rowan and the researchers went to conduct other research.
Julian received time with Torchic and used it to build their relationship.
He brought Torchic directly to the backyard grass field where Primeape had battled earlier.
"Torchic, show me the moves you know."
Although the laboratory had complete records, asking Torchic to demonstrate was also a way of building a bond.
Torchic nodded and first opened its mouth, spitting out a brilliant burst of Ember.
Elsewhere, a resourceful grandmother called Professor Rowan’s private number.
When Professor Rowan saw the caller, he was slightly surprised.
"Professor Carolina, what brings you to call me?"
Professor Carolina said, "I heard from Cynthia that you have a research project on Primeape and need her to go to Paldea to collect data on something called Annihilape?"
"I know very well that Cynthia wouldn’t know anything about Annihilape. From her expression, I could tell that boy told her, didn’t he?"
Although Professor Rowan had only spent a short time with Julian, he could tell that he was an excellent young man.
"Julian is a fine young man. And friends helping each other is normal."
Professor Carolina smiled.
"I’m not blaming that boy. I want you to help me add fuel to the fire."
"Add fuel to the fire?"
Professor Rowan raised an eyebrow.
Professor Carolina smiled.
"Cynthia is still unwilling to reveal her true identity. If those two keep going like this, when will I ever see Cynthia get married?"
"So I hope that when you arrange this data-gathering trip for Annihilape, you find a way to include that boy as well. Let the two of them spend more time together."
"That’s the only way sparks will fly."
Professor Rowan frowned slightly.
"I think matters between young people should still follow their natural course. If elders like us interfere recklessly, it might have the opposite effect."
"Carolina, don’t rush."
Professor Carolina sounded a little anxious.
"How can I not rush? Look at Agatha. After becoming an Elite Four member, she spent her whole life chasing the Champion title."
"In the end, Agatha never married. Now Cynthia has also become one of the Elite Four. I’m afraid she’ll spend her whole life chasing the Champion title and never marry either."
"No matter what, you have to arrange for the two of them to carry out the mission together."
Since Professor Carolina had gone that far, Professor Rowan could not refuse.
"Fine. I’ll try to arrange it."
"Thanks, Rowan. Whether the two young ones work out or not, I’ll treat you to drinks."
Professor Carolina had no other choice.
Her granddaughter took more than an hour just to choose an ice cream flavour.
If she had to choose a man, who knew how many years it would take?
Yet when it came to Pokémon battles, her commands were extremely decisive.
Professor Rowan’s eyes shifted.
He really did think of a decent idea.
Now he only had to wait for his researcher students in Paldea to send Annihilape-related information back to Rowan Laboratory.
When the time came, he could make arrangements.
Letting Julian and Cynthia adventure together in Paldea might truly create some sparks.
Julian, meanwhile, was on the grass field introducing Hakamo-o, Croagunk, Primeape, and Torchic to each other before beginning night training.
He had not expected that coming to Rowan Laboratory to find a way for Primeape to improve would unexpectedly bring him such a lively and enthusiastic Torchic.
After evolving, Hakamo-o was no longer as obedient and cute as Jangmo-o had been. The combative part of his personality had begun to show, and his vigorous life force made it hard for him to sit quietly in one place.
After returning to his room and lying down on the single bed, Julian began his second Pokémon simulation.
System, begin simulation!
[Random type selection has begun]
[Random result: Bug type]
Julian raised an eyebrow.
Bug type?
People always said Bug type was the weakest, but perhaps Bug type would produce even better results.
