Chapter 202: In a world of messed up motherfuckers
Lucas’s POV
My phone is pressed to my ear, and I’m pressed against the car seat.
I feel carsick for the first time in a long time. I think it’s due to my addiction to travelling with the Deus brothers. I’m so used to going everywhere with them and bugging them endlessly that I forget about my motion sickness.
If they were here, I’d be roasting Elias and stealing Noah’s attention just to make Elias jealous. That man is easy to mess with when it comes to Noah.
"I ate dinner" my twin sister answers the question I asked her a few seconds ago and I shut my eyes. I’m going to throw up all over Roman and he’d think I’m less hot. Screw you motion sickness.
"You didn’t eat shit" I reply and I hear Aria’s defensive hiss on the other end.
"Aren’t you just the amazing mind reader, twin brother?" she asks sarcastically and I laugh as little as I can manage. Roman is here next to me and he looks like a picture. I really don’t blame Noah for jumping on the marriage offer with him. This guy is handsome on a top model-level. Totally my style despite the black eye, busted lip, cheek cut- the list goes on.
The line goes silent and I hear Aria moving around. Ah yes...why did I call my sister?
"I wish you hadn’t attacked Noah, Ari" I say softly and she scoffs. My sister is not sorry for what she did. When I was told what she did to Noah, I lost my mind for a few seconds. We are both riddled with bad memories and endless pain, but I don’t see myself harming anyone for them...especially not sweet Noah.
That guy is just...simply Noah.
"I get sent away from home and my twin brother is calling for that omega. Wow. Did he give you anything good?" she asks with a snarl, and I know what she’s referring to without her saying it explicitly.
"It’s unfair" I murmur.
"What we endured was unfair" she snaps.
"He’s pregnant" I say and Roman’s head snaps in my direction. I glare at him to discourage him from saying anything. I want to make heart eyes at him but now is not the time. I’m having a serious conversation with my twin sister.
"He is pregnant?" Aria’s breath catches in her throat and I groan. She didn’t know about his pregnancy. If she had known, she wouldn’t have attacked him...I mean even without the pregnancy, she still shouldn’t have attacked.
"Do you get the gravity of what you did now?" I ask and she stays quiet.
"You would have gotten the blood of an innocent child on your hands all because of some stupid revenge" I say and she growls.
"Do you remember how you felt after Siren and Darius rescued and nursed us back to health?" I ask before she’d say something stupid.
"Of course I do. How can I ever forget?"
"Do you remember what you said to me in your tiny voice two nights after?" I ask and she goes silent. She knows just what I’m about to say.
"Don’t jugde a book by the cover. Actually, also don’t judge a book by what other people say, read at least two pages and make your own judgement" I quote.
"Siren and Darius are different" Aria says and I shake my head. She’s not getting the message I’m trying to pass.
"Si and Da are adults with the worst reputation in the world, yet you gave them a chance. What about Noah who was a teen too?" I ask sharply.
"Noah is different" she says with a voice that doesn’t sound as stubborn as she’s forcing herself to be.
"You’re becoming like the people we hate, Ari. Y’know...those saints who gladly name everyone sinners."
"I don’t like this conversation. Let’s talk when you have something better to say to me" my sister ends the call, and I keep the phone pressed to my ear. I knew she wouldn’t listen, but I needed to try. Noah is a part of my family now.
"Those types of people are everywhere" Roman says quietly and I turn my head to look at him.
"Excuse me?"
"The saints..." he slurs and I eye him. I guess he’s high on painkillers. Elias fucked him up real bad and a nurse had to give him some meds before we left.
"I’m talking about the sinner-pointing saints who also dirty hands" he manages to complete his words and I hum.
"Bro, you do realize you’re one of those saints, right? Goody two-shoes, pulled together family, and yada yada" I say and his lips twitch. I don’t want to assume he’s laughing at my joke.
"Do you know what it’s like to look up to a man for years...to watch him lead...to near-worship him only to..." Roman shuts his eyes. "...only to find out after preparing to give him the honorary goodbye he deserves, that he’s a monster?"
Huh? How high is he?
"Do you know what it’s like?" he asks as he turns his head in my direction and I slowly shake my head.
"No, I don’t know what it’s like" I say and he slumps in the seat. His eyes are glassy, but I don’t comment on it. He’s about to cry and I have no clue on how to console a grown ass crying man who’s my crush.
"I can’t stop thinking about it..." Roman stares at the roof of the car for so long that I fear he’s dead. Shit. I shouldn’t have called my sister next to him.
"Hey, you alive?"
"Sorry...I just feel like I was the one doing those heinous acts..." he trails off to stare at his hands. His palms are pink and soft, I look at mine, and they’re rough with years of hard work.
"You didn’t do any of it, but you can change it" I say, reminding him of his assignment for the Deus family.
"I have to play the role my father played? It makes me sick. At home he treated my family with love and care. He taught me about true omega duties, and I believed everything" he says, growing angry with each word he says, and I can only stare at him pitifully.
"Why can’t the Deus do what they do best? Why can’t they just go and kill them all?" he asks bitterly.
"Because we’ve tried once. One of their facilities was blown up and the omegas were saved, but their networking and planning grew wiser. We want to take them apart one by one, keep the current omegas safe, and keep the future omegas safe as well" I explain and he runs his fingers down his face.
"I have to play the role of a..." he moans.
Just like Noah, he’s a dumb guy stuck right in the middle of the mess their parents made.
"If you do your job smart enough, you’ll get out of the plan earlier" I say to him in a sorry tone.
"I don’t want to do this" he says, turning his head away from me. "I was really going to force Noah into this too, wasn’t I?"
"He looks so happy with the man the saints called the sinner...I feel so dirty" he moans and I hit the driver seat. "Pull the fuck over!" I yell and the car nearly skid off the road.
Goddess...what is it with these people and their need to always throw up?
I help Roman get out of the car just in time to let him empty his stomach on the granite floor...I guess Prince Charming has a conscience. Isn’t that super cute in a world of messed up motherfuckers?
