Pregnant Cultivator, Doted by Big Boss
Chapter 574 - 572: I’ll Scare You to Death
Chapter 574: Chapter 572: I’ll Scare You to Death
There’s truth to the saying: do no wrong by day, and fear no ghosts by night. Unfortunately, he’d done more than his fair share of wrongdoing.
Just then, the figure in the doorway vanished.
BANG! The wind slammed the door shut.
Arthur Jacobs’s body trembled, his lips turning blue.
"Is... is it gone?"
At that moment, he felt something drip onto his body and face. Arthur Jacobs reached out to touch it; the substance was wet, sticky, and carried the stench of blood. ’What is this? Is the roof leaking? But it’s not raining tonight.’
Inside the room, the extinguished candle flame flared to life again on its own.
At the same time, he could finally see clearly what was dripping onto him. What he had touched was blood. Fresh blood was still dripping from the ceiling—onto his hands, onto the floor.
A large pool of blood had now formed on the floor by his feet.
Arthur Jacobs found it hard to breathe.
"AHHH! A GHOST..."
"Someone... help! Blood... There’s blood..."
At that moment, the figure resurfaced in Arthur Jacobs’s mind. ’It’s him. It must be him, back for revenge. After he was sent away, I secretly hired someone to kill him. He must have died a horrible death, which is why his resentment is so strong that he’s come straight for me.’
The more he thought, the more terrified he became.
He couldn’t stop his body from trembling.
A chilling, gurgling voice drifted out, seeming to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. "I died such a miserable death..."
"Give me back my life..."
The voice by his ear was sinister and ethereal, fading in and out.
Finally, Arthur Jacobs couldn’t withstand the terrifying pressure. He felt a sudden release, and a telltale warmth spread down his legs. His eyes rolled back in his head, and he fainted from sheer terror.
Meanwhile, on the roof above, a Hidden Guard held a chicken, letting its blood drip down. Aaron Sinclair lifted a roof tile and peered into the room. Seeing that Arthur Jacobs had already fainted, he couldn’t help but scoff.
"Pathetic. What a weakling."
’Heh. So that’s all the courage he has.’
’If Arthur Jacobs had been the one being hunted back then, a weakling like him would’ve been turned to dust long ago.’
’Aaron Sinclair’s journey back then certainly hadn’t been easy, but all the assassins sent after him had ended up dead on the road. Two of them had even become wolf-food. As for why those two wolves had turned and fled the moment they saw him... well, perhaps he was just such a good person that even wolves couldn’t help but show him mercy.’
He stood up and dusted off his hands.
"Work’s done. Let’s pack it up and go to sleep."
Aaron Sinclair glanced at the Hidden Guard beside him and patted his shoulder. "Good work tonight. You did a great job. Your ghost act earlier was pretty convincing." That was right—the ghost at the door had been the Hidden Guard in disguise. As for the voice, it had been Aaron Sinclair’s own.
The Hidden Guard said softly, "Serving the Young Master is my honor."
Aaron Sinclair glanced at Arthur Jacobs, who had fainted with his eyes rolled back. He sneered, a sinister smile spreading across his face.
"Follow him for the next few days."
"Make sure bad luck follows him everywhere."
’And give him a good scare from time to time.’
The Hidden Guard responded respectfully.
"Yes. I will carry out your orders."
The Hidden Guard then led Aaron Sinclair back to The Prince’s Manor. In his other hand, the guard still carried a chicken—a rather plump one. "Here," Aaron said. "Roast this chicken and eat it yourself."
In high spirits, he then returned to his room to sleep.
The Hidden Guard stood where he was, testing the weight of the chicken in his hand.
’Stick with the Princely Heir...’
’...and you even get a midnight snack.’
’Not bad at all.’
’Once I’m off duty, I’ll go roast it.’
’As for where the chicken came from? I just grabbed it from the backyard of the General’s Mansion. If I’d known the Princely Heir was going to let me have it, I would’ve grabbed a couple more to share with the brothers.’
That night, Aaron Sinclair slept soundly.
But while he slept dreamlessly until dawn, the General’s Mansion was in an uproar.
In the General’s Mansion, the maids and servants on duty in Arthur Jacobs’s courtyard were all pale, their legs trembling. It was as if they had encountered a ghost last night; they had been forced to stand all night, unable to move or speak. During that time, they had also heard a sinister, terrifying voice.
By dawn, news that the General’s Mansion was haunted had spread like wildfire. Arthur Jacobs himself, upon waking from his faint, was so terrified that he scrambled out of the room, trampling through the blood on the floor. He stumbled about, shouting that there was a ghost, that Nathan Jacobs’s ghost had come for him.
To all this, Aaron Sinclair merely offered a faint smile, content to let his deeds go unrecognized.
He slept well that night and woke up early.
So, he headed out first thing the next morning. He was up so early because he wanted to familiarize himself with the area around his home.
After getting a feel for the neighborhood, he took a stroll into the city. Since his mother was likely still asleep, he decided to bring some breakfast back for her.
"Buy steamed buns! Delicious meat buns!"
"Get your pan-fried meat pies! Deliciously fragrant meat pies!"
Aaron Sinclair went to a bun shop and bought some warm meat buns and meat pies, which he had packed for Zephyr to carry. Afterward, he visited a dried fruit shop and bought some of the dried fruits his mother enjoyed, planning to bring them back for her to snack on.
After wandering around the city for a while, he was ready to head back.
Just as he was about to board the carriage, he glanced back over his shoulder. He wasn’t sure if he was imagining it, but he felt as if a pair of eyes were staring at him from behind.
His gaze finally landed on a wall.
’Strange.’
’There’s clearly nothing there.’
’Why do I feel like something over there is watching me? Don’t tell me I’ve run into a ghost, too.’
Shaking his head slightly, Aaron Sinclair got into the carriage. After his carriage slowly pulled away, two soul bodies materialized on the very wall his gaze had just swept over.
"Brother... do you think that young prince from The Prince’s Manor can see us?"
"Probably not? I’m not sure. Should we follow him and see?"
"The aura on that young prince feels terrifying. I don’t dare get close."
"But... what if he can see us?"
"Why don’t we... follow him and find out."
Aaron Sinclair was indeed an ordinary person now, but he had a protective Barrier left on him by Celeste Grant. Now, whether it was a person or some other thing, anything that tried to get close and harm him would suffer the consequences.
It wasn’t that Celeste Grant was overreacting; as a mother, she would always want to take precautions.
...
「That night.」
After Aaron Sinclair went to bed, two figures paced furtively at the base of the wall outside The Prince’s Manor’s back courtyard. No one else could see them, for they were soul bodies whose physical forms had been possessed. Because their bodies were not dead, they could not reincarnate. Yet, with their bodies occupied by some unknown entity, they were unable to return to them.
During the day, after sensing that the young prince was unusual, they had followed him back to the city. But The Prince’s Manor was shrouded in a Barrier that they couldn’t enter at all. Even getting a little closer made them feel as if their soul bodies would dissipate.
Just as the two were debating whether to leave, a figure appeared silently behind them.
"Hey, what are you two doing, skulking around here?"
The newcomer was none other than Celeste Grant.
