Chapter 31: Chapter 31| A Message From Inside the Box
Damian looked at the drive.
Sable was already reaching for it.
"There’s something else on the drive," Eren said. He looked at Damian with the specific quality of attention he’d had since the door. The look that had thirty years of weight in it. "The system’s full directive. Not the summary it’s been showing you. The complete architecture. What it was built to do beyond removing the seal." He paused. "I think you’re ready to see it. I think the system thinks so too."
As if in response to that or perhaps not in response, perhaps simply on its own timeline which had always been the only timeline it operated on.
Ding!
[System Origin Protocol: Stage 2 unlocked.]
[Full directive available. Initiating display.]
[Note: What follows was written for you specifically, Subject 07.]
[Note: It was written by someone who has been waiting thirty years to say it.]
The notification held for a moment.
Then new text appeared beneath it. Not the system’s usual clean formatting. Something different. The specific irregularity of words that had been written by a person rather than generated by an architecture. Uneven spacing. The digital equivalent of handwriting.
[Damian.]
[If you’re reading this the system found you and you found Eren and you’ve made it further than I let myself hope for most of the thirty years I’ve been in here.]
[The system was built to find you. To protect you. To open what was sealed so you can be what you were always supposed to be.]
[But that’s not why Eren built it.]
[He built it because I asked him to.]
[I built it because I needed you to know that everything that happened — the group home, the facility, the six years, all of it — none of it was abandoned. I have been here the whole time. Watching what I could watch. Doing what I could do from inside a box they don’t fully understand yet.]
[The notation in your file. That was me.]
[The Flux Origin System finding you the night you escaped. That was me telling Eren it was time.]
[Come find me when you’re ready.]
[I’ll be here.]
[I’m not going anywhere.]
[— Aria]]
The cottage was completely silent.
The fire moved in the hearth.
Sable had stopped typing.
Eren Jaeger looked at his cup and said nothing and gave Damian the specific gift of a person who understood that some moments didn’t require anything from anyone except the space to exist in.
Damian looked at the words on the screen at the edge of his vision and felt something shift in his chest that wasn’t any of the things he had names for and didn’t try to name it.
’She’s been here the whole time,’ he thought.
’The whole time.’
[Seal degradation progress: 1.8%]
The number had moved.
Not much. But it had moved — from the 0.3% it had been sitting at since the farmhouse, jumping without a training session, without a bond event, without anything except a message from inside a facility four hundred kilometers away from a woman who had apparently found a way to push the seal from the inside at the same moment her son read her words for the first time.
He looked at the number for a long time.
Then he picked up the encrypted drive from the table and looked at Eren Jaeger.
"Tell me everything about Facility Four," he said.
_ _
Eren Jaeger talked for two hours.
Not continuously — in the way of someone who had been holding information for a very long time and had learned to deliver it in the order it connected rather than the order it pressed to get out. He refilled the tea twice without asking and neither Damian nor Sable touched the second cup and he didn’t comment on that either. He just talked and Sable documented and Damian listened with the specific quality of attention he brought to things that were going to matter later.
Facility Four.
It had existed under four different names across thirty years, each name change corresponding to a structural reorganization within Nexarion that had left the facility itself unchanged while everything around it shifted. The current designation — Facility Four — was the fourth name. The location had never changed. A converted industrial complex in the northern region, three hours from the nearest city of significant size, sitting behind enough legitimate commercial infrastructure that aerial observation produced nothing useful.
"It was the first facility," Eren said. "The original black site. Everything Nexarion built afterward was modeled on what they developed there in the early years." He looked at his cup. "Which means it also has thirty years of iterative security development that the newer facilities don’t have. Every weakness that was exploited in any Nexarion installation over three decades was addressed first at Facility Four because the Directorate considers it the most critical asset in the network."
"Because of Aria," Damian said.
"Partly," Eren said. "She was the original reason the security philosophy developed the way it did. A Subject whose capabilities they didn’t fully understand, held under a classification that required them to keep her contained without understanding the ceiling of what they were containing." He paused. "But also because of what they’ve been developing there for thirty years using her pathway as the foundation. The research that started with the Prior Collective’s original work and that Nexarion has been running ever since." He looked at Damian. "Facility Four is not just where they’re keeping your mother. It’s where they’ve been building everything the rest of the network runs on."
Sable looked up from her tablet. "The methodology," she said. "The sealing technique, the pathway mapping, the grade classification system. All of it originates from Facility Four."
"From Aria’s pathway specifically," Eren said. "She has been the living foundation of their research program for thirty years. Every advance in Nexarion’s understanding of Flux pathway mechanics has come from studying what she is." He looked at the fire. "Which is also why they’ve kept her alive and functional when their standard protocol for a Subject of her complexity and resistance would have been termination long ago. She’s too valuable to dispose of. She’s also too dangerous to release." He paused. "They are caught between those two facts and have been for thirty years."
Damian looked at the encrypted drive on the table.
"Tell me about their security," he said. "Specifically."
Eren nodded. "Four perimeter layers. The outer two are standard Nexarion installation security — checkpoint, surveillance, patrol rotation. The inner two are specific to Facility Four." He leaned forward slightly. "The third layer is Subject-based. A rotating deployment of six active Subjects, mixed element classes, running continuous perimeter coverage. Not retrieval operatives — combat-designated assets. Subjects who were specifically selected and trained for facility defense rather than field work." He paused. "The fourth layer is what makes Facility Four different from every other installation in the network."
