Chapter 32: Chapter 32| Pressure
Damian was quiet for a moment.
"What is it," Sable said.
"A dampening field," Eren said. "A Flux suppression architecture built into the facility’s structural foundation. Within approximately fifty meters of the inner perimeter every Subject’s Flux output is reduced by sixty percent regardless of their natural ceiling." He looked at Damian. "Which means a Pyros-class Subject operating inside that field is working at forty percent of their normal capacity. A high-output Subject becomes a mid-range Subject. A mid-range Subject becomes barely functional." He held Damian’s gaze. "It also means your dissipation rate inside that field runs at the same speed it always does. But your effective ceiling drops by sixty percent. You’d be burning through reserves you can’t fully replenish at a rate that doesn’t change."
Damian absorbed this.
"How do you get through a dampening field," he said.
"You don’t," Eren said. "Not through it. You have to bring it down from the outside before anyone goes in." He paused. "The field is generated by a hardware architecture housed in a specific structural location within the facility. Take out the hardware and the field collapses. But the hardware is inside the third perimeter layer. Which means you have to get through the Subject defense ring before you can reach it." He looked at Damian. ""At your current level that’s not a viable approach. Not because you’re not capable, but because six combat-designated Subjects in mixed element classes on their home ground with a dampening field reducing your output is a problem that requires considerably more than what you currently have to solve it." He looked at Damian. "How long have you been outside the facility?"
"Three weeks," Damian said.
Eren nodded slowly. "Three weeks. Which means whatever you’ve built in that time you’ve built from nothing and under pressure." He paused. "It’s not enough for Facility Four. Not yet. But it’s a foundation."
The cottage was quiet for a moment.
’I know,’ Damian thought. ’I know that.’
"The seal," he said. "The Voltis pathway. When it opens.."
"When it opens the picture changes significantly," Eren said. "A Dual Axiom Subject at full expression operating above the dampening field’s suppression threshold is a different calculation entirely. The field was designed around single-element pathway ceilings. Nobody at Nexarion knows a Dual Axiom Subject exists. If they did, Facility Four’s security architecture would look very different." He looked at Damian steadily. "Which means the dampening field is the one vulnerability in their system that they don’t know is a vulnerability yet."
Damian looked at the fire.
’Not yet,’ he thought. ’I need to get stronger. Considerably stronger. And I need to do it before Facility Four becomes a conversation about what I should have been instead of what I’m going to do.’
"What do we do until then," he said.
"You learn," Eren said simply. "You grow. You build the capability and the network and the understanding of Nexarion’s infrastructure that a direct approach to Facility Four requires." He paused. "And you trust that your mother has been surviving in there for thirty years and can survive long enough for you to be ready." Something moved in his expression. Old pain, old guilt, old determination all sitting together in the specific way they sat in people who had been carrying something for a very long time. "She sent that message because she believed you’d make it. Not because she needed rescuing immediately. Because she wanted you to know she was there."
Damian nodded slowly.
He looked at the four words on the folded paper still sitting on the table.
He’s here. Find him.
’She sent that to start this,’ he thought. ’Not to end it. She knew how long this was going to take.’
Meanwhile,
Four hundred kilometers away the farmhouse was empty.
Kira Claire stood in the kitchen and looked at the table and noted the specific quality of an absence. Not a space that had never been occupied but a space that had been occupied recently and thoroughly and was now simply no longer occupied. Coffee rings on the table surface. A notebook page with handwriting she recognized as Sable Wren’s, torn out and taken. The folding chair still positioned at the edge of the cleared land outside the window where someone had been sitting to observe training sessions.
They’d been here for days. Living here. Working here. And they’d left this morning. She’d watched them leave, which had been the point, and she’d let them go, which had also been the point, and now she was standing in their kitchen four hours later trying to determine where a six hour head start had taken them.
She pulled out her field tablet and opened the secure channel to the Warden.
He picked up on the second tone.
"Report," he said.
"The targets have vacated the rural property," she said. "Departed this morning at approximately 0515. I have the vehicle description and a general direction of travel from the thermal trace on the access road — east on the regional highway, consistent with a destination between three and eight hours from the property."
Silence on the channel.
"You let them leave," the Warden said.
"I made contact this morning before departure," she said. "Standard pressure communication. Deadline delivered, operational picture assessed." She kept her voice even. "I had tactical conditions for retrieval at 0500. I chose not to use them."
The silence that followed was a different kind of silence.
"You let them go..," the Warden said. Then without waiting for a response."Why didn’t you engage them?. I sent you because you were capable. A retrieval operative with your record had every condition she needed at 0500 and walked away with a conversation." A brief silence, the kind that had something being swallowed on the other end of it. "Never mind. You made an inadequate choice. That’s what you’re telling me."
"The operational picture suggested a premature engagement would produce a destructive outcome rather than a clean retrieval," she said. "Subject 07 has improved significantly since the corner store incident. His output containment, his threat assessment, his positioning. He has someone with him who understands Nexarion’s combat methodology and has been training him against it." She paused. "A forced engagement at the farmhouse this morning against a prepared Subject with four days of targeted training and a researcher who knows our protocols would not have been clean. It would have been destructive. Possibly terminally so for one or both targets."
"Your mandate is retrieval," the Warden said. "Not assessment."
"My mandate is successful retrieval," she said. "Those aren’t always the same thing."
Another silence. Longer this time.
"You have three days remaining on your deadline," the Warden said. "If Subject 07 is not in custody by the deadline expiry I will activate the extraction team and your assignment will be formally closed as a failure." A pause. "Your first failure in seventeen operations, Claire. Think carefully about what that means for your classification."
The channel closed.
