Ning Shu’s heart remained unmoved by the spectacle. No matter what appeared now, she stayed perfectly calm.

After all, this was a place where anything could manifest simply because the world willed it so.

At this point, a few Pea Shooters ought to show up.

The man-eating plants reproduced with incredible speed. In the blink of an eye, a tender sprout would burst through the soil and grow into a beautiful, alluring carnivorous flower. Then, it would snap its jaws shut on any creature that dared to pass by.

At this rate, the entire campus would soon belong to the man-eating plants.

Song Mo looked at the flowers. His composure was also beginning to crumble.

“How can these things even exist?” he asked.

Ning Shu gripped her knife. “Are we still looking for the president?”

She felt that finding him was truly useless, but Song Mo insisted on it. His reasoning was that the president could call the outside world for help.

In this illusion, the campus was the entire world. To whom exactly would they be calling for help?

Ning Shu suspected that even if they found the president, it wouldn’t do a bit of good. For all she knew, the president might be the ‘Big Bad’ behind everything. Since this was a dream, anything was possible.

It wasn’t that she was being lazy, she just didn’t want to exert herself on a pointless errand.

However, Song Mo was determined. He endured the pain from his wounds and insisted on carrying her to find the president.

“Put me down,” Ning Shu told him. “I don’t think many people in this university are still alive.”

The man-eating plants had appeared specifically to clean up the battlefield by absorbing nutrients from the corpses.

And they looked terrifying to boot.

“Why did you show up last night?” Ning Shu asked in a low voice.

“What happened last night?” Song Mo asked, looking confused.

Oh, right. That was in her dream. Song Mo had appeared in her dream, so he shouldn’t know anything about it.

She was still trapped inside an illusionary dreamscape.

“Nothing,” Ning Shu said. She looked at her feet. Her mind was racing as she tried to figure out how to break through the current situation.

If this went on forever, would she lose herself?

They fell into a quiet silence. The only sound was the snapping of the man-eating plants as they swayed in the wind.

It felt as if they were the only two people left in the world.

Song Mo stopped insisting on finding the president. At this point, whether they could even find the man was a question. It wouldn’t be easy to navigate a sea of man-eating plants.

They would be chewed up in an instant.

Song Mo looked at Ning Shu with a helpless expression. “Ah, it looks like our chances of survival are very low. Even in a movie, there should be one or two survivors who learn to cherish life after the ordeal, live happily ever after, and have two children. But this feels like a total party-wipe scenario.”

Ning Shu: …

What are you supposed to do without a protagonist’s halo? Living happily ever after… do you think this is a fairy tale?

Following normal logic, shouldn’t a superhero have appeared by now to rescue the students from this living hell? Since no one had shown up, they shouldn’t count on any ‘happily ever after.’

Ning Shu let out a dry laugh. Song Mo’s stomach let out a loud growl, followed immediately by Ning Shu’s own stomach.

She rested her chin in her hand and watched the man-eating plants. They had sharp teeth and were dripping with saliva, so they looked quite hideous. “They have quite the appetite. They’ll eat anything made of flesh and blood.”

“Should we go find something to eat?” Song Mo asked. “There’s a supermarket on campus. Maybe we should head there.”

“Sure, but we still have to cross the sports field,” Ning Shu said with a forced smile.

Song Mo looked around, trying to find a weapon to deal with the horrific plants.

Ning Shu had a blade, but it was essentially just a dagger—or perhaps closer to a pair of scissors. To use it, she would have to get close to a plant, but the plants could swallow a person whole the moment they stepped within range.

Furthermore, their saliva was extremely corrosive. A person would be dissolved beyond recognition in no time.

The stakes were definitely getting higher. This was a deliberate attempt to drive a person to the brink. Sooner or later, she wouldn’t be able to take it anymore.

How could she return to the real world? No matter how real this place felt—the sensations of the body, the pain, the taste, the touch, the smell—this illogical, nonsensical world was fundamentally an illusion.

“Ah!” Song Mo was suddenly pinned down by a giant mosquito that had leaped from a tree. The mosquito was enormous, roughly the size of a powerful bulldog.

It used its long proboscis to drain Song Mo’s flesh and blood in an instant. Even his bones vanished. All that remained was a soft layer of skin draped on the ground.

Ning Shu backed away. Her face twitched as she stared at the massive mosquito. She never imagined a mosquito could grow so large.

The tiny insects she usually saw were now terrifyingly huge. Every detail was visible, including the mosquito’s six gruesome, blood-sucking tubes.

After the mosquito finished with Song Mo, the man who had been so full of life moments ago was nothing but a human rug.

The buzzing of the mosquito was amplified until it sounded like a demonic frequency. The sound made her head feel like it was going to explode.

The giant mosquito flew toward Ning Shu. She turned and sprinted away, but the insect eventually caught her. The proboscis pierced her skin, and her flesh began to swell as something was injected into her. A violent itching followed, along with the agony of losing a massive amount of blood. Her body convulsed in a series of painful spasms. She felt as though even her bones were melting.

She felt itchy, pained, and cold all at once!

Slap!

A sudden sound rang in her ear as something hit her face.

Dazed, Ning Shu bolted upright. She was gasping for air, with her hand over her heart. Her heart rate was off the charts, and she felt like her chest was going to explode. Her muscles felt tight and painful, and she was drenched in sweat.

Because she had stood up too quickly, her head swam with dizziness.

Everyone in the classroom stared at Ning Shu as she stood there.

The professor looked at her with an expressionless face. “What are you doing?”

Ning Shu looked around in confusion.

Wait, aren’t I in the classroom? Was everything that just happened a dream?

A dream I had after falling asleep?

“Some people haven’t turned in their papers. Is my lecture really so boring that it makes you sleep from beginning to end? It’s one thing to sleep, but now you’re disrupting the other students.”

The professor was clearly displeased with her. Ning Shu just stood there like an idiot. “Sit down. Do you have an objection to what I’m saying?”

Ning Shu sat down while still in a daze. Behind her, Song Mo poked her in the back with his pen. She turned around weakly. “What is it?”

Song Mo held out his hand. In his palm was a crushed mosquito, one that had been gorged on blood.

“You fell asleep, and a mosquito was biting your face,” Song Mo whispered.

Ning Shu: …

Did I dream about a giant mosquito just because one was biting my face?

She rubbed her temples. Her entire body felt weak and aching, and her mouth was uncomfortably dry.

Had the people who died earlier come back to life?

With people dying and reappearing like this, she couldn’t tell what the situation was anymore. Her mind was a complete jumble.
