"Why are you all so gloomy? Is my fiancée someone you all feel this way about?"

Adrian asked everyone once he noticed that the mood was off. But no one was willing to say anything to him regarding the family he had chosen to marry into.

Everyone except Emma.

"It is not your fiancée we have a problem with, but her younger sister. This would be fine if she were not tagging along."

No one spoke again, but the silent agreement in their eyes was all anyone needed to see to understand how they felt about Adrian’s fiancée’s younger sister.

But Adrian just laughed off their concerns and waved his hand.

"Ah, I do understand your concerns. But I assure you there is no need to worry. The last time you all saw Selene was a year ago. I am sure she has grown a lot during that time. Kana tells me that Selene has changed as a person. This time, I am sure we can get along if we try."

This was Adrian’s subtle way of telling them all to grow up and stop blaming Selene, and his defense made everyone frown.

Even Nathan looked like he was questioning his brother’s sanity.

But in the end, no one could do anything about this decision.

Kael also missed his chance to tell his family that he would be leaving tomorrow, which made him sigh. He wanted to speak up, but the mood had turned awkward.

’I will tell them tomorrow during breakfast.’

Kael decided, but unfortunately, he did not get a chance even during breakfast. And it was all because his future sister-in-law decided to arrive early.

When he went down for breakfast the next morning, he saw one familiar face and one unfamiliar face sitting at the table.

Kana Asterveil was not someone Kael knew well. All he knew about her was her name and that she was Selene Asterveil’s older sister.

But as for Selene, she was someone Kael knew very well, and there was one reason behind it.

It was because she always tried to kill him.

From the very first moment Selene had seen him, the high elf had declared him the "enemy of everything good in this world" and stabbed him in the chest.

Kael had been lucky to survive back then. It had been a scar he carried on his body until the very end.

Now, he no longer had that scar on his body. But the phantom pain still struck his side, making it hard for him to move.

"Kael, what are you doing? Come and take a seat. I will introduce you to my fiancée and her younger sister. This is Kana, and her sister is Selene-"

Adrian had not even finished his introduction when Kael instinctively dodged a knife flying toward him.

The knife struck the wall behind him. It would have pierced his chest had he not moved.

"Selene, what are you doing? I am so sorry for her behavior! This has never happened before, and I...I will try talking to her about this."

Kana looked both uncomfortable and shocked by what had happened, and she was not the only one. Everyone else looked at Selene as if she had lost her mind.

But Selene had eyes for no one except Kael, and her mouth slowly opened to form words.

"You are the enemy of everything. You should not even be alive. So what are you doing here, you cursed being? Because of you, this world will be destroyed again. Was once not enough?"

Selene’s voice was clear, but it seemed distant.

Everyone looked at Selene as if she had lost her mind. Even her own sister tried to calm her down, but Selene did not snap out of the trance she had fallen into.

Instead, she grabbed her sword, pulled it from its sheath, stood up, and pointed it at Kael.

"I am going to take you out right here and now. That way, you won’t be able to spread your curse any further. It is time you pay for your sins."

Selene was so fast that Kael almost failed to react to her attack. But he managed to sidestep her several times with the help of his magic. Finally, everyone else snapped back to their senses, and Emma blocked Selene’s sword with her own before pushing her back.

"Hey, what do you think you are doing? Kael is going to be your brother-in-law. Are you saying you want to kill him?"

Emma asked while holding her ground. But whatever force was controlling Selene surged, making her even more powerful.

Her aura matched Emma’s, and her sword slipped past Emma’s guard before sending her flying.

"Stay away from this boy. This has nothing to do with you. I am just trying to reset the flow of this world before it is too late."

Selene’s voice echoed as she spoke, and her eyes flashed. She intended to kill Kael at all costs.

Kael wanted to weave a spell around Selene, but it was hard for him to wield magic inside the barrier. Even so, he managed to throw up a shield around himself and Emma when Selene attacked again.

Kana decided she needed to stop her sister as well, so she quickly ran over to the younger high elf and wrapped her arms around Selene’s body.

"Selene, stop it! You are losing yourself to your instincts. There is no need to act like this. Kael has not done anything wrong."

Kana’s words were soft and gentle, but Selene was too warped by her own instincts to hear them.

Instead of calming down, she smacked Kana across the face and knocked her back. Blood flew from Kana’s mouth from the assault, but Selene merely looked back at her with cold eyes.

"Do not try to stop me. This time, I taught you a small lesson, but next time, I will make sure you suffer the same fate as the defaulter."

It was both a warning and a threat wrapped into one.
