Chapter 777: The Villagers’ Misunderstanding

  • Next Chapter

"Now you’ve decided to speak properly? Just a moment ago, that wasn’t your attitude!"

The Base Commander’s mouth turned downward, showing no politeness to the group, as his Superpower fluctuated intensely, mercilessly oppressing the villagers.

An overwhelming sense of crisis instantly engulfed everyone’s hearts. Coupled with an invisible Control Power immobilizing their bodies, everyone’s faces turned pale.

They all felt as though their life and death depended solely on the whims of this group.

"It’s a misunderstanding, just a misunderstanding! Let’s talk it out; we surely got the wrong person."

The middle-aged man forced a smile but was on the verge of tears.

"Heh!"

The Base Commander let out a cold laugh, refusing to withdraw his pressure.

While he couldn’t outright kill so many villagers, he took pleasure in frightening them.

If the Bai Family’s skills weren’t sharp, they might indeed have died inexplicably at the hands of these people!

Just as the Bai Family was about to ask the middle-aged man why the villagers harbored such deep-seated hostility towards them, a plump girl suddenly ran over from a distance.

"Excuse me! Please, spare the Village Chief!"

The girl seemed only in her early twenties, slightly more plump compared to ordinary girls, with shallow dimples that appeared whenever she spoke.

Her fluffy, long golden hair naturally draped over her shoulders, creating a comfortable aura.

She was incredibly anxious and tense, bowing deeply to the Bai Family upon arrival.

"What’s going on with your villagers?"

Bai Xiqin asked.

The girl appeared very genuine, not the kind that seemed cunning at first glance.

"Hello, we’ve met before. You rescued us from the bus near the town covered with zombie blood, giving us a chance to escape."

The plump girl spoke with gratitude filling her eyes.

"So, these are the saviors then! Well, it’s like family not recognizing family. How about joining us for breakfast?"

The middle-aged man interrupted the girl before she could continue.

"You, stop talking—did we save you?"

Bai Xiqin furrowed her brows, finding the middle-aged man annoyingly loud, and increased her Control Power on him, then turned to continue questioning the plump girl.

"Are you one of the girls from that bus?"

She recalled that before heading to Shanghai, the Bai Family once acted heroically, rescuing many girls captured by demon youths in town.

Before that, Bai Yifan even cross-dressed to lure the trafficker out, encountering Wang Ge, who killed the trafficker and coincidentally saved the girls on a bus.

It must have been that incident.

That was some time ago.

To rescue people, Bai Xiqin couldn’t fathom why her family was cast as the villains.

"Yes! I’m Zhang Ping, and this here is Village Chief Zhang, father to Zhang Xiaoying, one of the girls we were rescued with."

The plump Zhang Ping pointed to the middle-aged man leading the group, her eyes darkening when mentioning Zhang Xiaoying.

"Why did they call us villains earlier?"

Bai Xiqin glanced softly at the surrounding villagers, who were terror-stricken under the Base Commander’s oppression but still looked at the Bai Family with immense resentment.

"As we returned, we encountered a horde of zombies. All the other girls perished, only Xiao Ying and I survived."

Zhang Ping’s eyes drooped as she spoke, overwhelmed with sorrow.

"And then?"

Bai Xiqin’s frown deepened.

"Xiao Ying believed that had you either brought us back or rescued us an hour later, we might have avoided the zombie horde, sparing the village girls from death."

Zhang Ping bowed apologetically to the Bai Family again.

"I apologize for being so ungrateful."

Bai Xiqin paused, slowly understanding what Zhang Ping meant.

So their rescue was misplaced?

"Haha, do you think you could have survived leaving that zombie blood-soaked town? You would all have perished!"

Liu Jing, heated, spoke.

Those demon youths, despite their age, knew relentless torture methods, with a countless number of girls perished there.

The girls who managed to escape were incredibly lucky to be alive.

Just being rescued mid-way before entering that town was already immense luck.

Returning home independently, encountering zombies, and dying in their jaws was already fortunate!

Considering the situation back then, entering that town surely meant a fate worse than death.

"I know, I know! I apologize again!"

Zhang Ping’s face flushed red from Liu Jing’s words, bowing apologetically once more.

"Does everyone in your village think this way?"

Bai Zhengxuan squinted at the crowd, his gaze sharp with hostility.

What an ungrateful bunch of people.

If zombies killed the village girls, why blame the Bai Family!

"No, no. It’s a misunderstanding. We just need clarity, everything will be resolved."

Zhang Ping was nearly in tears from anxiety.

She looked at the leading middle-aged man, hesitated, wished to speak, but stayed silent under his warning gaze.

"Dad, what are you all doing! Why haven’t you killed them yet?"

A sharp female voice suddenly rang out.

Bai Xiqin followed the voice, spotting a meticulously dressed girl with heavy makeup, her eyes filled with disdain when meeting Bai Xiqin’s gaze.

A girl without any Superpower.

If she had Superpower, she would immediately understand how terrifying the oppression was on the villagers.

Bai Xiqin, finding the voice familiar, suddenly remembered: it was the very voice that once pleaded with the Bai Family to escort them home.

Claiming her dad was the village head.

She appears to be Zhang Xiaoying, referred to by Zhang Ping.

"Silence! Get over here and apologize to your benefactors!"

Village Chief Zhang saw his daughter arrive, immediately reprimanding her with a harsh shout, his gaze warning.

It was all his daughter’s idea; claiming the Bai Family had resources and Crystal Cores from the bus, sparking his greed.

Only Zhang Xiaoying and Zhang Ping managed to escape, with Zhang Xiaoying blaming the village girls’ deaths on others, while the timid Zhang Ping lacked voice authority.

Thus, Zhang Xiaoying decided everything, leading villagers to believe the Bai Family caused the village girls’ demise, eventually forgetting if they were saviors or traffickers.

It didn’t matter anymore.

Everyone just needed a target for their resentment.

The villagers’ misunderstanding deepened over time.

"Benefactors, you say? They’re just traffickers. Kill her!"

Zhang Xiaoying’s gaze landed on Bai Xiqin’s fair face, a smile curled at her lips.

Harbored by the village’s admiration for so long, Zhang Xiaoying loathed any girl appearing prettier, her eyes intolerant of even a speck.

It’s just that Zhang Ping, being plump, posed no threat, possessing the Gold Ability which allowed her village survival.

Her father was now the village’s leader, possessing ultimate authority, where killing someone was left unchecked in this era.
