Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space
Chapter 1547: Daily Life
Yang Run Tai didn’t really mind; he just read the newspaper, mainly wanting to stay by her side. Another thing was to let everyone know the two of them were together.
About an hour and a half later, the bell in the library rang. Only then did Feifei pick up her book.
It was the reminder bell—it was time for class.
The two of them left the library and walked together along the campus path.
"Feifei, are you still going to practice piano today?"
"Yeah. Teacher Zheng said this Sunday she wanted me to take part in a piano concert, but I turned her down."
Feifei was the last person who liked being in the spotlight. As long as she could play for herself, that was enough.
Yang Run Tai chuckled. This little girl in her teens was really so low-key.
She really was afraid of drawing other people’s attention. Her personality was actually quite similar to her parents in a lot of ways.
The two of them reached the fork in the road. "I’m going to class."
"I’ll go with you tonight?"
Jiang Feifei shook her head. "No need, my brother and I are going together."
Yang Run Tai didn’t take it the wrong way; he knew what Feifei was like. If she said she didn’t need him, then she really didn’t, so there was no point pestering her. That would only make things awkward, and if the girl started to feel resistant toward him, that wouldn’t be good.
Today things were extremely busy on Jiang Xinyu’s end.
She had already promoted a few people, but they still weren’t very familiar with the work. So there was a lot for her to worry about.
She’d been busy ever since she came in that morning—shipping goods out, receiving raw materials, doing the accounts.
She was running around in circles, barely even finding time for a sip of water.
At ten-thirty in the morning, she headed straight back home again.
She was mainly worried about Shang Zhenkun. In fact, the two younger ones were perfectly capable of eating on their own. She prepared breakfast for them, and after school they could fix things up by themselves.
On the way Jiang Xinyu was thinking she still needed to find a nanny. But after meeting several, she really didn’t feel satisfied with any of them. This was something she really couldn’t just make do with.
Shi Xian and Tingting ran back home; once there they helped Jiang Xinyu cook.
They all knew their mom had it really hard, and Shang Zhenkun also felt for Jiang Xinyu.
"From now on, you can just make it in the morning. We three men will heat it up ourselves to eat."
Jiang Xinyu shook her head. Her work might matter, but Shang Zhenkun was already at this age, and his health was getting worse day by day. There couldn’t be no one at home all day.
Jiang Xinyu had decided that in the afternoon, once she got to work, she would call Wu Fengying and ask if she had anyone suitable on hand.
"It’s fine, I’m already looking for someone—someone who’ll stay home all day to keep you company."
Shang Zhenkun nodded. "Actually I really can manage, you’re all just being too cautious."
Jiang Xinyu only smiled. She thought to herself, is everyone like this when they get old? Isn’t this just putting up a brave front?
After lunch the two kids handled the cleaning up, and Jiang Xinyu needed to rest for a bit too.
In the afternoon, once she got to the office, the first thing Jiang Xinyu did was call Sister Wu’s workplace.
"Sister Wu, I want to hire a long-term live-in nanny. Do you have anyone suitable whose background you know well?"
"Xinyu. What sort of age range are you looking for?"
"I think it’s better if they’re not too old, so they can still work for a few more years. The main thing is character. And I feel it’d be best to find a couple.
Master Shang definitely wouldn’t want just a woman to take care of him, so we’ll find a man to be responsible for Master Shang, and the woman will handle the household chores."
"A couple? I’ll have to think about that. I’ll ask around, and if it looks possible I’ll call you."
After hanging up, Jiang Xinyu dove back into her work.
While she was doing the accounts, the gate guard came in from outside, saying someone was asking for her.
Jiang Xinyu was a bit puzzled. She really didn’t know many people here—who would come looking for her?
When she got to the gate, she saw a middle-aged man.
"Excuse me, you are...?"
"Hello, comrade, I’d like to apply for a job here."
Jiang Xinyu paused and glanced at the gate guard. Was this person here for her?
"Comrade, do you have any particular skills?"
"I know a bit of medicine."
Jiang Xinyu paused. That was something they could use; the factory needed an infirmary, but right now they still couldn’t afford it.
"Come in and let’s talk."
The two of them went into the office.
"Comrade, my name is Lu Changde, I’m a local. It’s just me and my wife—my wife only has one hand. She can manage daily life fine, but no one will hire her.
When I was young I was an apprentice in a pharmacy, so I understand some medical theory.
I just want to find a job. I’m strong, and as long as I can support the two of us, that’s enough."
Listening to his disjointed speech, Jiang Xinyu could tell they were having a really hard time in life.
This wasn’t a charity, though. "Comrade, how about this: the work here really is very tiring. Come tomorrow and give it a try. If you think you can manage, work for a month first. That month will be your period to get used to things, and also our observation period for you."
"Okay, thank you, comrade, thank you."
Jiang Xinyu was extremely busy. After agreeing that he’d come tomorrow, she sent him on his way.
To be honest, all the workers here had been recruited by Han Xiangjun, and were people who had previously worked with him.
The reason she decided to let this Lu Changde come was mainly to see what kind of person he was, and if he turned out to be suitable, maybe have him take care of Shang Zhenkun?
She’d still have to get someone to look into him; after all, you couldn’t just have someone at home and not feel secure about it.
She called in one of the people Han Xiangjun had left behind, and had him investigate Lu Changde and his wife.
Right now Jiang Xinyu was also in a bit of a "desperate times, desperate measures" mindset. She had thought it over—if she really couldn’t find anyone suitable, she’d stop coming in Monday to Friday, and just come on weekends to organize the accounts.
The person responsible for checking up on Lu Changde had a report ready before getting off work that evening.
Looking over the report, Jiang Xinyu felt this man wasn’t suitable.
"I told him to come work tomorrow. Keep an eye on things, and make sure nothing happens."
After work she hurried home—there was a big family waiting to be fed.
Jianbin and Shi Jing had both joined clubs and had activities today, so Feifei had no choice but to go practice piano alone.
There were still some day students. Jiang Feifei walked out of the school with the crowd, then rode her bike toward Teacher Zheng’s home.
She’d barely ridden a little way out from the school when she heard sounds behind her, but she didn’t pay attention. It was a public road; of course there’d be people.
Very quickly Jiang Feifei felt herself being surrounded; three young guys on bikes were circling around her.
"Classmate, let’s get to know each other? We’re students at Capital University too."
Jiang Feifei had zero interest in this kind of hit-on. She didn’t even spare them a glance, just kept going at her original speed.
"Classmate, we’re schoolmates. If we know each other, we’ll have company going home after class every day."
"Yeah, I’ve already been watching you for several days. Your place must be nearby, right?"
Jiang Feifei frowned slightly. These two were really quite annoying.
"Classmate, say something." The first one who’d spoken pushed hard on his pedals twice, trying to cut Jiang Feifei off with his bike.
