Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 140: Maybe It’s Already Moving

Julian woke slow that morning, sunlight pale and gray through the window, the fox already stirring beside him with alert, bristled tension.

[Host. Update.]

Julian blinked, still fighting off the fog of sleep. ’go ahead.’

[The watching presence has reappeared. Same signature as the initial encounter in the garden. It manifested briefly near the academy’s eastern wall approximately twenty minutes ago, then vanished before this unit could complete analysis.]

Julian sat up fully now, unease sharpening fast through the last remnants of sleep. "again," he said aloud, more to himself than the fox or the System.

"I felt it too," the fox said, tails already bristled stiff, ears pinned back. "same as before. there and gone before I could get a proper read on it."

Julian rose, crossing to the window, scanning the quiet, empty grounds beyond without really expecting to find anything, though old instinct demanded he look anyway. Nothing moved beyond the ordinary rhythm of early morning academy life — a few Sentinels crossing the yard, kitchen staff already beginning their preparations, nothing that suggested any lingering trace of whatever had briefly manifested and disappeared again.

"twice now," Julian said slowly. "same pattern both times. brief appearance, then gone before anyone can properly identify it."

"maybe it’s after you specifically," the fox said, voice careful. "the same way the entity was. maybe this is connected somehow."

"maybe," Julian said, turning the possibility over with methodical, careful attention. "or maybe it’s not after me at all. maybe it’s just watching, for reasons that have nothing to do with me specifically."

"that seems like wishful thinking," the fox said bluntly.

"probably," Julian admitted, something wry cutting faint through his unease. "but I’d rather consider every possibility properly than just assume the worst outright."

[This unit has no data supporting either theory conclusively,] the System interjected. [However, this unit notes the timing of both appearances correlates loosely with periods of significant activity or attention directed toward host — the garden encounter occurred shortly after host’s return to public awareness, and this most recent encounter follows closely after host’s demonstration in the training hall.]

Julian’s jaw tightened slightly, turning that correlation over with fresh, uneasy focus. "so it’s watching whenever I do something that draws attention," he said slowly. "which would suggest it does have some specific interest in me, even if the appearances themselves stay brief."

"or," the fox said, something more troubled entering its voice now, "something’s changed. maybe whatever’s been quiet since the entity retreated isn’t quiet anymore. maybe this is the beginning of something rather than just idle curiosity."

Julian considered that, unease settling colder and more certain in his chest. "you think the entity’s already making its move," he said. "using this thing as some kind of scout, maybe. gathering information before it actually returns properly."

"I don’t know," the fox admitted. "but given everything we already know about how patient and calculated that thing is, I wouldn’t put it past it to send something quieter ahead of whatever it’s actually planning. it didn’t seem like the type to simply wait around doing nothing."

Julian let out a slow, uneasy breath, turning back from the window, the fragile, hard-won calm of the past several days settling into something sharper and more watchful now. "either way," he said finally, "we can’t keep treating this like an isolated incident. two appearances is a pattern, even if we don’t understand what it means yet."

"Are you going to tell Reid this time," the fox said, something firm in its tone that made clear it wasn’t really a question.

"yeah," Julian said. "I should have told him after the first one, honestly. I didn’t want to raise alarm over something I couldn’t properly explain, but two occurrences changes that math considerably."

He dressed quickly, the fox trotting close beside him as they made their way out into the academy’s waking grounds, morning light strengthening steady overhead despite the unease still coiled tight in Julian’s chest.

They found Reid in the officers’ mess, already reviewing reports over a half-finished breakfast, and he looked up immediately at the sight of Julian’s set, focused expression.

"Is something wrong," Reid said, setting down his fork.

"maybe," Julian said, settling into the seat across from him. "I need to tell you something I probably should have mentioned sooner."

Reid’s attention sharpened fully, setting the reports aside entirely now. "go ahead."

Julian laid it out carefully, methodically — the first encounter in the garden weeks ago, the brief, unidentified presence that had vanished before he or the System could properly analyze it, and now this second appearance, just this morning, following the exact same pattern.

Reid listened without interrupting, jaw tightening steadily as the account unfolded, and by the time Julian finished, something grim and focused had settled fully across his exhausted features.

"twice," Reid repeated slowly. "and you’re only telling me now."

"I didn’t want to cause panic over something I couldn’t properly explain," Julian said. "and honestly, the first time, I genuinely thought it might just be nothing. a stray Aberration signature, maybe, gone before it could actually threaten anyone."

"and now," Reid said.

"now I think it’s watching me specifically," Julian admitted. "and I think, given everything else we already know about what’s coming, we can’t afford to just wait around hoping it clarifies itself eventually."

Reid nodded slowly, already turning the problem over with careful, methodical focus. "I’ll increase patrols around the academy’s perimeter," he said. "quietly, so we don’t alarm the wider population unnecessarily. and I want you reporting every single occurrence from now on, immediately, no matter how brief or seemingly insignificant."

"understood," Julian said.

"do you think it’s connected to the entity," Reid asked, voice lower now, more careful.

"I don’t know for certain," Julian said honestly. "but given the timing, given everything else that thing said about testing me, about coming back — I don’t think it’s a coincidence. whether this is a scout, or something separate entirely with its own agenda, I don’t think we can afford to assume it’s harmless."

Reid’s jaw set hard, something resolute settling behind his exhausted eyes. "then we prepare for both possibilities," he said. "and we stay alert. whatever’s watching you, whatever it’s planning — we’re not letting it catch us unaware again."

Julian nodded, something steady and grim settling behind his own calm expression, the fox curled tense and watchful against his leg beneath the table.

"maybe it’s nothing," Julian said quietly, turning the earlier uncertainty over one final time. "or maybe you’re right," he added, glancing toward the fox, "and something’s already changed. maybe the entity’s already making its move, quiet and careful, exactly the way it prefers."

"either way," Reid said, voice firm and certain, "we’re ready this time. whatever comes."
