The report reached Reid and Julian before they’d even finished their conversation in the officers’ mess, a runner arriving breathless and pale, interrupting the tense, focused quiet with fresh, urgent alarm.

"Commander," she gasped, "reports coming in from the northeast. multiple sightings. Aberrations, moving in scattered but coordinated groups. several villages already reporting bitten civilians, and—" she hesitated, "—some confirmed conversions."

Reid was on his feet instantly, exhaustion forgotten in the face of fresh, immediate crisis. "how many groups."

"at least four separate sightings so far," the runner said. "northeast, east, and two reports coming from the southern approach as well. scattered, but the pattern suggests they’re all converging toward the same general direction."

"which direction," Julian asked, already standing, tension coiling tight through his chest.

The runner hesitated again, glancing between the two of them. "the Elite Academy," she said finally. "the reports all suggest movement trending toward the Elite Academy’s territory."

Julian’s stomach dropped, the earlier conversation about the watching presence settling into fresh, uncomfortable context. "that’s not a coincidence," he said quietly.

"I know," Reid said grimly, already moving, voice sharpening into command mode despite the fresh alarm still crossing his features. "get word to the capital immediately. I want every available Sentinel mobilized, and I want the Elite Academy warned before this reaches their walls, not after."

The runner nodded and sprinted off, and Reid turned back toward Julian, something urgent and searching in his expression now. "Do you think this is connected," he said. "to what you told me this morning."

"I think it’s too precise to be coincidence," Julian said, jaw tight. "scattered sightings, all converging toward one specific location, right after something’s been watching me twice in the past several weeks. that’s not random Aberration migration. that’s coordination."

"the entity," Reid said.

"maybe," Julian said. "or something acting on its behalf. either way, I don’t think the Elite Academy’s about to face an ordinary breach."

Jayden arrived moments later, having clearly caught wind of the alarm already spreading fast through the academy’s halls, gold light already flickering restless around his knuckles. "I heard," he said, breathless. "multiple sightings, converging on the Elite Academy. is that accurate."

"accurate enough that we’re not waiting around to confirm the details further," Reid said. "mobilize whoever’s available. we move within the hour."

"I’m coming," Julian said immediately.

Reid’s jaw tightened, old protective instinct flaring hard despite the urgency of the moment. "you just recovered," he said. "properly, for the first time since the coma. I don’t love the idea of throwing you straight back into—"

"I’m coming," Julian repeated, firmer this time, calm certainty settling behind the words. "if this is connected to whatever’s been watching me, then whatever’s about to happen at the Elite Academy might have everything to do with me specifically. I’m not sitting here safely while people I might be the actual target for get caught in the middle of it."

Reid studied him a long moment, exhaustion and reluctant understanding both crossing his features before he finally, grimly nodded. "fine," he said. "but you stay close. whatever this turns out to be, I’m not losing you to it after everything it already cost to get you back."

"understood," Julian said.

The academy dissolved into fast, coordinated motion within minutes, Sentinels and Guides scrambling into formation, supplies and weapons gathered with practiced, urgent efficiency. Julian moved through the chaos with calm, focused purpose, the fan already settled familiar and ready in his grip, the fox pressed close against his leg, tension radiating plain through every line of its small body.

"you think it’s really coming for you," the fox asked quietly, low enough that only Julian could hear over the surrounding noise.

"I think," Julian said, voice equally quiet, "that something’s been watching me for weeks, and now Aberrations are converging on a location I’ve got a formal audience scheduled with in a matter of days. that’s either the strangest coincidence in this Empire’s history, or it’s exactly what it looks like."

"a trap," the fox said grimly.

"maybe," Julian said. "or a test. or both. either way, I’m not letting people at that academy pay the price for whatever it’s actually trying to accomplish."

They mobilized fast, the formation moving out within the hour exactly as Reid had promised, Julian riding near the front alongside Reid and Jayden, the fox tucked secure against his shoulder, the countryside blurring past in tense, focused silence as they pushed hard toward the Elite Academy’s distant grounds.

[Host,] the System interjected partway through the journey, cutting through Julian’s focused unease. [This unit has been monitoring the reported sightings’ movement patterns more closely. Confirmed: all four groups are converging on a single point, timing their approach with unusual precision. This is not consistent with natural Aberration behavior.]

’coordinated,’ Julian thought grimly. ’the same way the entity coordinated the horde during the capital’s assault.’

[Correct. This unit theorizes a similar directing presence, though the scale appears significantly smaller than the previous incident. This may represent a deliberate, controlled test rather than an all-out assault.]

’a test,’ Julian repeated silently, jaw tightening. ’testing what.’

[This unit cannot confirm without further observation. However, given the entity’s established pattern of behavior, this unit suggests the possibility that host’s presence, response, and decision-making during this crisis may itself be the subject of evaluation.]

Julian’s grip tightened faint around the fan’s handle, resolve hardening cold and absolute beneath the steady rhythm of the ride. ’then let’s give it something worth evaluating.’

The formation pressed on hard through the remaining distance, smoke beginning to smudge faint against the horizon well before the Elite Academy’s distant walls came properly into view, confirmation enough that whatever was converging on the grounds ahead had already, at least partially, made contact.

"there," Jayden called out, voice tight, pointing toward the rising smoke. "we’re close."

Reid’s jaw set hard, urging his mount faster, the rest of the formation following suit, and Julian felt the fan’s familiar weight settle steady and ready in his grip, the calm, focused clarity he’d carried through every impossible fight since waking finally, fully settling back into place as the Elite Academy’s embattled walls drew closer with every passing, urgent minute.

’whatever’s waiting for us there,’ Julian thought, resolve absolute and unshaken despite the uncertainty still coiled tight beneath it, ’we’re not letting it win.’
