The Elite Academy’s outer walls came into view choked with smoke, the sound of clashing steel and panicked shouting carrying clear across the open ground as the formation closed the final stretch of distance.

"multiple breach points," Jayden called out, scanning the chaos ahead with sharp, focused attention. "they’re not funneling toward one entrance. they’re spreading, hitting the walls from at least three different directions at once."

Reid’s jaw tightened, old instinct sharpening fast beneath the urgency. "that’s not how a normal incursion behaves," he said. "that’s coordinated. deliberate."

Julian’s eyes swept the scene as they approached, cataloging the pattern with cold, methodical focus even as his stomach tightened with dawning, unwelcome certainty. The gray shapes weren’t simply overwhelming the walls through sheer numbers. They were probing, testing, shifting their pressure point exactly whenever the Elite Academy’s defenders managed to reinforce one section, redirecting toward whatever gap remained weakest, patient in a way that made the hair on Julian’s arms stand on end.

"it’s not a breach," Julian said quietly, dread settling cold and absolute in his chest. "it’s a trap."

Reid’s head snapped toward him. "explain."

"look at the pattern," Julian said, gesturing toward the shifting, coordinated assault. "it’s not trying to overwhelm the walls outright. it’s testing every angle, probing for exactly where the defense will crack, and adjusting in real time. that’s not mindless horde behavior. that’s someone — or something — actively directing this, patient enough to wait for the perfect opening rather than just throwing everything at once."

"the same way the entity directed the assault on the capital," Jayden said grimly.

"smaller scale," Julian said, "but yes. I think that’s exactly what this is."

They crossed the remaining distance fast, the formation splitting on Reid’s sharp, urgent command, riders peeling off to reinforce the weakest sections of the wall while Julian, Reid, and Jayden pushed toward the academy’s main breach point, where the fighting looked thickest and most desperate.

They arrived to chaos — Elite Academy Sentinels fighting in ragged, exhausted clusters, civilians and younger students being herded toward the academy’s interior by whatever staff could be spared from the fighting itself, gray shapes pressing hard against a defensive line that was visibly, dangerously close to breaking. Somewhere in the distance, a bell tolled frantic and continuous, warning of further breaches along walls that had never once, in the academy’s long history, been designed to withstand a coordinated assault like this.

Julian dismounted fast, fan already summoned and spinning loose at his side, cutting into the fray without hesitation, the calm, controlled precision he’d built through weeks of desperate survival carrying him fast through the nearest cluster of rogues.

"fall back to the secondary line!" Reid bellowed, cutting down an attacker with brutal efficiency. "regroup, don’t let them isolate you—"

Jayden’s gold light flared bright, sweeping wide through another cluster, buying precious seconds of breathing room for the exhausted defenders still holding the line, several younger Sentinels stumbling back with visible, grateful relief at the sudden reinforcement.

Julian pressed forward, cutting a fast, decisive path through the horde’s densest concentration, fan flashing violet-gold through the smoke and chaos, and felt it the moment his instincts sharpened — that same, familiar prickling awareness he’d felt twice now in the academy garden, sharp and unmistakable, radiating from somewhere just beyond the immediate chaos.

’it’s here,’ Julian thought, tension coiling tight through his chest even as he cut down another attacker without slowing. ’whatever’s been watching me. it’s here, right now, in the middle of this.’

[Confirmed,] the System said, urgency threading sharp through its usual clipped tone. [Signature detected. Same as previous encounters. Location approximately forty meters northeast of host’s current position.]

Julian’s eyes snapped toward the indicated direction, and there, standing calm and untouched amid the surrounding chaos, was a figure cloaked in shadow, features indistinct, watching the unfolding battle with the same patient, unreadable stillness Julian remembered from the garden. Gray shapes surged and clashed all around it, and yet nothing touched it, nothing so much as brushed against the stillness of its presence, as though the battle itself simply parted respectfully around whatever it actually was.

"there," Julian said sharply, already cutting a path toward it. "Reid, that’s the presence I told you about—"

Reid’s head turned fast, following Julian’s gesture, and his expression hardened immediately. "I see it," he called back, driving his blade through another attacker. "go. we’ll cover you."

Julian surged forward, fan spinning lethal and precise through every rogue that crossed his path, closing the distance fast toward the shadowed figure that remained, infuriatingly, exactly as still and unbothered as it had been from the very first moment he’d spotted it. His breath came hard, adrenaline and old, familiar wariness driving him faster through the last stretch of chaos separating them.

He was perhaps ten meters away when it finally moved, not fleeing this time, but simply turning, slow and deliberate, to face him fully for the first time.

Julian froze mid-stride. The face beneath the shadow’s edge was one he recognized instantly, achingly, impossibly — hollow-eyed, expression utterly blank, none of the warmth or the cruelty or the possessive obsession that had once defined every feature.

"Xavier," Julian breathed, disbelief and horror crashing through him all at once, the fan’s spinning motion faltering for the first time since the fight began.

The hollow figure said nothing, simply watching him with vacant, unrecognizing eyes, and beside it, emerging from the same shadowed stillness, a second figure stepped into view — identical in face, equally hollow, equally silent, the crowd of clashing steel and screaming rogues seeming to blur and recede around the small, terrible clearing where the three of them now stood.

"Ian," Julian said, voice cracking now, the full, horrifying weight of what he was looking at settling in with sickening clarity.

Neither brother responded. Neither showed a single flicker of recognition, of memory, of anything resembling the men Julian had once fought so desperately to escape. Their expressions carried nothing at all — not cruelty, not warmth, not even simple curiosity. Just empty, absolute stillness, waiting.

The battle raged on around them, gray shapes still pressing hard against the academy’s failing defenses, but in the small, terrible clearing where Julian now stood frozen, facing two hollow shells of men who’d once wanted nothing more than to possess him completely, the world had narrowed down to something far more personal, far more devastating than any horde could have managed alone.

"what did it do to you," Julian whispered, horror and grief tangling thick in his throat, the fan lowering slightly at his side despite every instinct screaming to stay ready. "what did that thing do to you both."

Xavier’s hollow form tilted its head slightly, mechanical and empty, and when it finally spoke, the voice that emerged carried none of the warmth Julian remembered, none of the possessive fondness, nothing at all except flat, absolute obedience.

"the entity requires your compliance," it said, voice utterly without inflection. "resist, and we have been instructed to demonstrate exactly how much has already been sacrificed to secure it."
