Julian stood frozen for a long, terrible moment, the fan trembling faint in his grip as he stared at the two hollow figures wearing faces he’d once feared and, in some twisted, complicated way, come to understand.

"compliance," Julian repeated slowly, forcing steel back into his voice despite the horror still crawling cold through his chest. "compliance with what."

"you know what," the hollow figure that had once been Xavier said, still flat and empty, no trace of the possessive obsession that had defined every word he’d once spoken to Julian. "the entity requires you. we have been repurposed to ensure that requirement is fulfilled."

Julian’s mind raced, uncertainty warring hard against every instinct screaming at him to either fight or flee, unable to properly decide which the situation actually called for. These were Xavier and Ian’s faces, Xavier and Ian’s voices, and yet nothing behind either expression carried anything Julian recognized as actually them.

’is this a trick,’ he thought desperately. ’some elaborate manipulation, using their faces to make me hesitate. or is this genuinely what’s left of them.’

[Host,] the System interjected, urgent and sharp. [Analysis complete. Both signatures register as fundamentally altered from their previous states. No independent cognitive activity detected. No emotional signature whatsoever. This unit assesses both individuals have been converted into what can only be described as mindless weapons — retaining physical capability and combat memory, but stripped entirely of autonomous thought, personality, or will.]

Julian’s stomach turned violently. ’they’re gone,’ he thought, horror and grief crashing through him in equal, devastating measure. ’whoever they actually were, whatever complicated, twisted version of them existed before — it’s just gone.’

"should I follow you," Julian said aloud, voice rough, testing the words carefully even as every survival instinct screamed against the idea. "is that what compliance means. walking wherever you lead me."

"compliance means what the entity decides it means," Ian’s hollow form said, voice identical in its flat, mechanical emptiness. "you will learn the specifics when resistance ceases."

"that’s not an answer," Julian said, jaw tightening.

Neither figure responded, simply watching him with the same vacant, patient stillness, and Julian felt the weight of an impossible decision pressing down hard and immediate — follow them into whatever trap this clearly represented, or refuse, and risk whatever consequence "demonstration" actually meant when delivered by something willing to weaponize two people it had already stripped of everything human.

’this is a trap,’ Julian thought, forcing cold, methodical clarity through the horror still churning in his chest. ’obviously. it has to be. nothing about this is a genuine negotiation.’

[Concur,] the System said. [However, this unit notes both figures possess combat capability that appeared significantly enhanced during initial observation. Direct confrontation carries substantial risk, particularly given host’s exposure to ongoing combat exertion from the wider battle.]

’so fighting them is dangerous,’ Julian thought. ’and following them is obviously a trap. what’s the third option here.’

[This unit does not currently identify a clean third option. Recommend host proceed with extreme caution regardless of chosen path.]

Julian’s grip tightened on the fan, resolve hardening cold and absolute despite the impossible choice still weighing heavy in his chest. Behind him, the sounds of battle continued raging, Reid and Jayden’s voices carrying faint through the chaos, still holding the defensive line, still unaware of exactly what confrontation Julian now faced alone.

"I’m not going anywhere with you," Julian said finally, voice steady despite the grief still cracking beneath it. "not blindly. not without knowing exactly what I’m walking into."

"then we proceed to the demonstration," Xavier’s hollow form said, utterly without inflection, and both figures moved at once, faster than Julian’s exhausted senses could properly track, closing the distance in the span of a single heartbeat.

Julian barely got the fan up in time, steel meeting whatever strange, corrupted strength now animated Xavier’s fists, the impact jarring hard enough up through his arm that he staggered back a full step despite his own considerable strength.

"that’s new," Julian gasped, forcing himself back into ready stance.

Ian moved in from the opposite side, coordinated and precise in a way that mirrored his brother’s attack exactly, no hesitation, no independent variation, simply mechanical, perfect synchronization. Julian barely managed to twist aside in time, the strike grazing close enough to tear through the edge of his sleeve.

"you’re not actually trying to kill me," Julian realized aloud, ducking another coordinated strike, piecing the strange restraint together even mid-combat. "if you wanted me dead, this fight would already be over."

"correct," Xavier’s hollow voice confirmed, entirely unbothered by the observation. "the entity requires you alive. compliant. this is persuasion, not termination."

"funny way of persuading someone," Julian gritted out, catching another strike on the fan’s edge, the force behind it nearly buckling his knees despite his own considerable strength.

He fought back hard, careful and controlled, deliberately holding back from anything that might prove genuinely lethal even as both hollow figures pressed their coordinated, relentless assault without a single flicker of hesitation or self-preservation. They didn’t dodge the way living combatants dodged. They didn’t flinch, didn’t adjust for pain, simply absorbed whatever damage Julian managed to land and kept pressing forward with the same mechanical, unwavering purpose.

’they don’t feel anything,’ Julian thought, horror and grim, desperate focus tangling together as he fought. ’not pain, not fear, not hesitation. that thing really did strip away everything.’

He caught a brief opening and drove the fan hard against Xavier’s shoulder, the strike landing solid and clean, and watched with sick, unwilling fascination as the hollow figure simply absorbed the impact without so much as a flinch, immediately pressing forward again as though nothing had happened at all.

"Julian!"

Reid’s voice cut sharp through the chaos, and Julian caught sight of him fighting his way closer, blade already slick with dark, corrupted blood, expression twisting with fresh horror the instant he registered exactly who Julian was fighting.

"stay back!" Julian shouted, barely managing to deflect another coordinated strike. "they’re not— this isn’t a normal fight, Reid, they’re not even trying to kill me!"

"then what are they doing," Reid demanded, cutting down a rogue that strayed too close, fighting his way steadily nearer despite Julian’s warning.

"testing me," Julian said grimly, catching Ian’s strike on the fan and shoving him back with everything he had. "or delivering a message. I honestly don’t know which yet."

Xavier’s hollow voice cut through the chaos again, flat and absolute, carrying easily over the surrounding noise. "resistance has been noted," it said. "the demonstration will proceed regardless."

Julian’s blood ran cold at the words, dread crashing hard through his chest even as he forced himself back into ready stance, watching both hollow figures draw back into perfect, synchronized readiness for whatever came next.
